Conflict in the Middle East

Gary Lineker - he really had to go and a warning t against virtue signalling

Maybe Gary Lineker's departure acts as a warning for this not acquainted with history to go around randomly reposting pro Palestinian links though I suspect he is not the only one. In a way it is a sad demise to a career but an absolutely necessary one and a timely warning that a proportion of P Palestinian supporters are anti semites.

for to say I didn't like the Gaurdian 's take that the BBC were looking to sack Gary anyway and he just have them an excuse.

Lineker made two fatal mistakes - firstly, using his media profile and platform to make political statements, and secondly, thinking that anyone gives a fuck what an aged sports commentator thinks about Middle Eastern geopolitics.

He’s about as sharp as a beach ball, and should stick to football punditry (or not).

Whereas everyone is dying to hear what mynameisx has to say on the subject?

You can disagree with his views if you like, but denigrating him because of his profession shows a lack of ability on your part to properly debate. He is just as entitled to share his opinion on politics as anyone else.

confusedaboutetiquette · 19/05/2025 19:17

Reflecting a little more today, it’s surprising that a former Spurs player can have been so unaware of the images he was using. The club has a big Jewish fan base

Darls3000 · 19/05/2025 19:18

Well done Gary. He went up in my estimation for this. The silence on the disgusting genocide is sickening so glad he used his fame and profile to put his head above the parapet.

yummyscummymummy01 · 19/05/2025 19:20

It's enormously frustrating that he wasn't more careful about what he posted. I think he feels genuine horror at the genocide in Gaza and that's what he sought to post about. For me the state of Israel and Jewish people are entirely separate and you have to be incredibly mindful about that when you talk about it. My most militant friend about the war in Gaza is Jewish. Not all Jewish people agree with what is going on, which is hardly surprising given the horror of it.

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Graham from Dogs Behaving Badly yet. He seems to be a hate figure for dog owners on here. 🤣

MyNameIsX · 19/05/2025 19:11

Your truth, perhaps.

Meanwhile I have received 17 ‘agreed’ emojis, so a number of MN’ers clearly agree with me.

Nice try though.

Sounds like the televote for Eurovision - totally fair !

Well now, clearly the BBC and others, disagree with you.

His profession ‘was’ as a sports ‘anchor’, and former savoury snack ‘ambassador’.

I do not recall him being appointed or remunerated on the premise that he would seek to use his platform to comment on geopolitics - he clearly lacked neutrality, as well as a proper understanding of the subjects in which he sought to comment.

He withdrew enough of his posts, which is illuminating in itself.

Now he has departed the BBC, he is, of course free to comment as he sees fit.

Hamas is a terrorist group. The IDF isn’t. They have-or should have-different standards.

Yes, that's right. Those naughty terrorists. Can't be expected to behave themselves can they?
Why do you expect better behavior from Israelis than Palestinians I wonder?

The Hamas apologists will do all they can to twist the narrative.

It’s all they have left.

They proudly call themselves the only democracy in the Middle East and are a close ally of Western democratic nation - countries that provide them with material support, both financial and military. That’s why it matters. Pariah states act with impunity and are treated accordingly; democracies, especially those we back, are supposed to be held to a higher standard. That's why.

I don’t. I expect better behaviour from people committed to the Geneva Convention and who insist that they do everything they can protect civilians than I do from terrorists. Who aren’t and don’t.

Gary lineker is a virtue signalling jumped up little arsehole

Gary Lineker is approximately 5 feet 10 inches (178 cm) tall.

CurlewKate · 19/05/2025 19:33

Funny how being prepared to speak out is now called virtue signalling..

CurlewKate · 19/05/2025 19:34

@MyNameIsXCan I ask who you are calling a “Hamas apologist”?

ScribblingPixie · 19/05/2025 19:36

EsmaCannonball · 19/05/2025 15:24

Lineker isn't knowingly antisemitic or misogynistic; his posts on October 7th or on men in women's sports show that Jewish people and women are so insignificant they aren't even on his radar. There is no money or kudos in being pro-Jewish or pro-women (in fact, the opposite) so men like Gary don't waste any time thinking about them. It really is as shallow as cost-benefit activism.

He took money to go to Qatar, reading out a scripted monologue that was supposed to make it all ok, including a line that said 'women's rights are in the spotlight' - then he didn't mention women's rights throughout the whole World Cup. He's shallow as a puddle.

Well, I expect exact same behavior from all races in the world when it comes to what is unacceptable violence. I'm surprised you're willing to admit that you believe Israelis should be held to a higher standard than Palestinians.

TizerorFizz · 19/05/2025 19:37

Gary should have stuck to his day job. Claudia W has enough sense to keep quiet (she’s very bright of course)! It’s not necessary and he’s an employee. If he’s freelance - do what he wants.

Edited

Strongly disagree that Israelis need to be held to a higher standard than Palestinians. Surprised you're openly admitting you don't hold the same view.

Almost a bit... racist really. As if you don't believe Hamas capable of behaving themselves.

They're not kids. They're men. Just like all other men.

Oh I didn't realise I asked his height ? It's ok, I can Google. But thankyou for taking the time out of your day to find that information out.
