And how could they be overcome?

Are there any opportunities?

The almost total destruction of Gaza and Israel's complete opposition are the two big ones for me.

Circumferences · 18/11/2024 20:04

The fact Israel will kill all the Palestinians before that happens

MissyB1 · 18/11/2024 20:06

Well it would need a totally new Government (with quite different views) in Israel for a start.

Toomanywars · 18/11/2024 20:26

Hamas gone.

A new leadership in Gaza that will agree to stop lobbing missiles into Israel.

A new leadership in Israel.

Independent countries helping run gaza when hamas go.

Aid to rebuild.

This

I think the biggest issue is that neither side actually wants this solution.
There have been reasonable opportunities to have this in the past and they have never been agreed on by either party.

Intergenerational trauma compounded on both sides
The destruction of infrastructure in Gaza such as schools, hospitals and universities meaning that the next generation will grow up with huge deprivation. If they survive childhood.
Israel's aspirations for more land and its culture of expanding illegal settlements.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 18/11/2024 20:43

The Islamic terrorist groups and other Middle Eastern countries that despise the western democratic values that Israel represents

Wonderlust233 · 18/11/2024 20:44

Just watched a video of a British doctor speaking about the current atrocities happening in Gaza by Israel.

Israel bomb the area and then send quadcopters to SHOOT CHILDREN!!! What the actual f*.

Then I see a post like this.

Every Palestinian is homeless and displaced. Why would they ever want peace with Israel?

Sunflowersinwinter · 18/11/2024 20:48

The genocide happening right now is an obstacle you could say.

The fact Israel will kill all the Palestinians before that happens

And this, if there's not many Palestinians left then not much of a need for a Palestinian state. Israel can just take it all and build their real estate on the graves of Palestinian children. There are groups in Israel who have already started planning and marking out land in Gaza for themselves.

The non return of the innocent Israelis that have been held and brutalised for over a year now.

I think the leaders of both sides have destroyed any chance for it now. The distrust between the sides runs so deep, and the Palestinians will, understandably, never stop hoping to go back to their homes.

The last bit has really struck me. I am Jewish and I kind of see why Israel had to happen at the time it did (hundreds of thousands of displaced Jews after an utter catastrophe who wouldn't or couldn't return home to where their neighbours waved them off to die) but the Palestinian people bore the cost and continue to bear it.

I am appalled by what Netanyahu has done. October 7 was a horror but what they are doing is genocide and I will not have it in my name and especially not in the name of my grandfather's family who were murdered by the Nazis. He has destroyed any future for Israel

The Israeli genocide in Gaza and ethnic cleansing of the West Bank might represent your western values but it certainly does NOT represent mine or those of most of the people I know.

Daftasabroom · 18/11/2024 23:15

@Echobelly as long as there are voices like yours there is hope.

Rhaidimiddim · 18/11/2024 23:21

Religious beliefs. If you believe your god gave you a bunch of land, then contemporary intetnational law counts for nothing.

Ohthatsabitshit · 18/11/2024 23:37

Israelis are the biggest barrier to peace of any kind.

Ellmau · 19/11/2024 00:07

Israeli and Palestinian politicians/leaders.

It's a hopeless situation.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/11/2024 07:13

The antisemitism on this thread is vile- if someone wrote “Muslims are the problem” everyone would pounce but it’s fine to claim “Israelis are this that and the other”.
And despite the tik tok generation thinking a 4 second clip shows all sides, it is not a genocide.

Twilightstarbright · 19/11/2024 07:21

Agree @OnlyFoolsnMothers

I’m Jewish and utterly appalled by the actions of the Israeli government, and there’s been wrongs on both sides.

Both sides have to want to work to a resolution. I never thought I would see the Good Friday agreement so I live in hope.

Oh really ? Perhaps you should inform the UN, countless human rights groups and the institute of genocide that contrary to their research, you have new information that they don't to claim it's not a genocide.

KvotheTheBloodless · 19/11/2024 07:31

Both sides want the other to be wiped from the face of the earth. I'm not sure how peace can come until both governments are replaced by reasonable human beings.

That said, I don't think Israel will ever be safe. The land that was 'given' to the hundreds of thousands of displaced Jewish people after WWII already belonged to people that already lived there, who understandably were and are extremely upset to be displaced themselves. Israel is surrounded by hard-line Islamic states who consider them a fair target for 'religious' reasons/excuses. It's a precarious situation and unlikely to improve any time soon.

It's all such a mess.

Perhaps you think the pope is also watching four second tiktok clips? Do you know what else is vile? Denying a genocide taking place in plain sight.

Pope urges investigation to determine whether Israel has committed genocide in Gaza

In a new book, the head of the Catholic Church says that according to "some experts, what is happening in Gaza has the characteristics of a genocide".
