Yazidi woman freed from Gaza in US-led operation after decade in captivity | Reuters

She was kidnapped when she was eleven years old, and has been enslaved for the last ten years.

Someone I know was involved in this project which included some concerts and cataloguing Yazidi music in The Bodleian Library - music is really important to Yazidis and passed down through oral tradition, which is partly why breaking the community up is so devastating.

I really don't understand why every thread like this has to descend into sniping at people who are appalled by what is happening in Gaza. Can you not just talk about how this is a positive thing without making fun of or making digs at people who are concerned about a humanitarian catastrophe? Of course it is great that this woman has been found, it is also appalling that over 6000 women have lost their lives in Gaza in the last year, both things can be true.

It's obvious the angle of the thread is to put Israel in a better light and justify the genocide by cherry picking news. I still support Palestine and Lebanon against Israel. Nothing justifies Israel's actions, nothing could make me accept Israel's actions and thankfully many are of my view, too.

Which genocide? The one against the Yazidi people, where they abduct children, rape them and force them to carry children?

Which part of "Lebanon" do you mean when you say supporting them against Israel?

Difficult to accept that over 14,000 children have to be killed, thousands more injured, displaced, starved, dying from diseases and orphaned to save them! Let's not pretend any of this is to free Palestinians from Hamas. I have never once heard Netanyahu claim that was his ultimate aim.

A 2 second google gave me this-

In a video statement released by his office, Netanyahu said that in efforts to bring back hostages, "we have maintained the goals of the war, first of them the destruction of Hamas."

PBS news 01 June 2024.

The war started in response to the atrocities of 7 October.

Of course the destruction of Hamas is the point of the war.

Would you also not support the destruction of a terrorist group?

Sometimes the ignorance on here seems wilful.

At the cost of the lives of 14000 children and who know how many injured, with over 25000 children having lost a parent, with hundreds of 1000s of children being displaced and living in filth without adequate anything, with I would imagine almost every single child living in abject terror for the past year seeing things no child should have to see that will live with them until their dying days. Surely you can see why some people find it controversial to support the action that is causing this harm to children?

Ilovetowander · 04/10/2024 08:48

Every country faced with terrorism has taken action . Israel is doing the same.

How is it possible to put Israel 'in a better light' with this story? They did this good thing, however much you hate Israel there is no getting away from the fact they did a good thing. The only alternative would be not to report that Israel was involved out of some pernicious hatred for Israel. Even if you don't care about Yazidis, or women, this story is relevant to the conflict in Gaza.

If you truly supported the innocent Palestinians and Lebanese caught up in these awful wars, then you'd be supporting Isreal to free those people from the fanatical terrorists oppressing them, Hamas and Hezbollah. It's quite difficult to understand how we're a year into this conflict and you still don't understand the basics.

Let's not forget the Israeli oppression these people have endured, that's also one of the basics

It was a good thing that Israel opened the border for her and allowed her to leave. Allowing people to evacuate a war zone is always a positive. It does give rise to questions about why it took more than 4 months for this to happen and why it had to be led by the US but hopefully Israel will be looking into that.

I know they want to destroy Hamas I am disputing it is to free those people as the poster suggested. You generally don't kill, injure, displace people you are trying to free

As neither you or I have ever operated in a complex war zone in conflict with the sort of people who would keep a kidnapped 11 year old girl as a slave I doubt we are in a position to speculate.

In war it does happen. Obviously ideally it wouldn’t but I can’t think of any conflict or war that doesn’t harm civilians in some way?

That's why I said hopefully Israel are looking into it. She was 'free' from her capturs for over 4 months and authorities knew where she was for that time. I would hope that if Israel knew that some of the hostages had managed to escape and were hiding waiting to be rescued it wouldn't take over 4 months and much US involvement for them to be able to leave Gaza. Gaza is incredibly dangerous for all kinds of reasons right now, taking 4 months to evacuate victims is far from ideal and ways should be looked at to improve that.

Unfortunately Hamas sees the deaths of these women and children as 'necessary sacrifices'. Hamas started this on October 7th, knowing it would directly lead to the death of many of its own people.
Of course no one, not me, no one wants to see children killed. But the ultimate responsibility for those deaths lies with Hamas. It's on a country's own leadership to protect its people during a war. Israel protects its own. Hamas does not protect its own. It films their misery and releases that misery online to garner support for itself and hatred for Israel. Remarkably successful strategy if you don't care about the deaths of your own.

The genocide of the Yazidi people by Isis was one of the most awful atrocities in recent memory. A lot of those women saw their families murdered and were then sold as slaves to Isis members, and were then repeatedly raped for years. I believe Hamas is part of the same problem of islamic Fanatics. I support Israel in trying to get rid of it.

You are entitled to your view on that and others are entitled to a different one. It isn't true though to say that 'no one' wants to see children killed, some people do not care, Meirav Ben-Ari, an Israeli politician for instance thinks that "the children of Gaza have brought this upon themselves", given that she was not forced to resign after such an outrageous statement one can only assume that this mindset does not exist in isolation. It is a very sad situation indeed.

Agree. The sooner the far right part of the Israeli government gets voted out, the better.

She is actually regarded as a 'liberal centrist' but yes I agree with your sentiment re the far right and obviously anyone else who would share the appalling views of Meirav Ben-Ari.

100%. Support in the form of aid money is also their oxygen.

Hamas has spent billions in aid on tunnels (lots of Palestinian children used as slave labourers died building these), weapons, luxury hotel suites for its leaders and indoctrination camps that turn the next generation of children into fanatics who crave death rather than life, annihilation rather than hope.

But the Israelphobic posters on these threads who claim to care oh so much about the Palestinians who are seriously and profoundly harmed by this corruption and this abuse NEVER mention these facts do they. And why not? Because they do not really care about Palestinians at all. Using the suffering of a group of people to have a go at a country you do not like is just beyond the pale.

So sorry this thread has been derailed, again. Apologies OP.

Can I ask how you think anyone would know what was happening in Gaza if Palestinians didn't document it given Israels ban on international journalists and observers? Or do you not think that it is important that it is documented?

Appalling treatment of women and other minorities, it is good that these stories are being told and people now what attributing have been committed.

Women are not a minority.

Yes I saw this. Appalling. Father kills innocents, including a three month old baby, in cold blood. Son kills innocents and almost succeeds in killing a 9 month old baby.

It’s an ideology that’s driving this. Not an unsettled “grievance”.

No, you and the poster that you quoted were talking about the videos released of Palestinians suffering. Calling it propaganda to help Hamas. I'm asking if this wasn't done if their suffering wasn't filmed and released how would anyone know what was happening there. Drs accounts are dismissed here. Aid workers are all regarded as Hamas or antisemtic. If no one else is allowed in then how would we know what is happening? It's important that we know what is happening right?

Hoppinggreen · 04/10/2024 11:51

The treatment of Yazidhi women and children is horiffic.
However, I hope that the treatment and rescue of this woman will not be used as propaganda, she is a real person who has been through something unimaginable not a pawn
