What would happen if Israel unilaterally withdrew from the WB?

Israel has unilaterally withdrawn twice. Once in Gaza and once in Lebanon.
And now look where it is. Hamas took control of Gaza and Hezbollah didn't disband in Lebanon. Not sure these are such great precedents.

I think the two state solution is the only viable compromise solution (well aware neither side seem to want to advane towards it right now) in the end and eventually there does need to be an end to the military occupation but, really, demanding an end in 12 months? Everyone knows that is not possible and the people who would be most harmed by a unilateral Israeli withdrawal are Palestinians. They'd end up controlled by Iran. It'd be Gaza on steroids

are you justifying illegal occupation ? So to prevent something illegal we should do something illegal?

Thank you to whoever reported the post from stupidfarang. I didn't see what they said when they quoted me but assume it wasn't pleasant.

Who exactly would take over the West Bank? What would Israel's security guarantees look like? What would happen to the large settlement blocs which were slated to be included in land swaps? How will gaza and the WB be connected?
And there are a million other unresolved issues.
Israel won the territories from Jordan and Egypt who have since ceded all claims and there is no properly functional Palestinian state so there is no-one who could take control.
It's a joke of a resolution, purely a political stick to beat Israel with

I just pointed out that an earlier post wasn't exactly evidence based. Not sure on what grounds it was removed. Perfectly polite and pleasant actually

@StupidFarang I've been told what you posted and that's not what you said and it wasn't "perfectly polite and pleasant". 🙄

again it’s a joke that you’re justifying something that is illegal.

Well, clearly our opinions differ. Obviously I can't repeat it or you get banned. But we clearly have different views on how useful it is to being deities into the conversation and what the implications are.

No practical answers then? Nah, didn't think so.
Wanting something to end in a way that doesn't lead to chaos and civil war and pointing out the absolute lack of practicalities and the total disaster of previous precedents is kinda normal I believe.

youre justifying the illegal settlements . You’re not recognising the damage the settlements and the Israeli government supporting and allowing it . I don’t know what has to happen for there to be peace in WB and Israel. What I know is that allowing illegal and violent settlements is not the way. And this is not another thing to criticise Israel. We are criticising Israel because is the one doing it. Do you know many governments that are funding settlements in order to steal land from another country? Israel has to focus on their security not on stealing land

there will be no peace in Israel as long as there is no peace in the rest of the countries. And for that Israel has to return the land it’s stolen and stop funding more settlements and violence.

StupidFarang · 24/09/2024 13:32

And let's not forget the three nos of Khartoum when israel thought the Arabs would exchange land for peace following the victory of the six day war in 1967. If ending then occupation had been a priority, it could have all been ended 50+ years ago

Just like israel gave up the entire Sinai for peace with Egypt (Sadat turned down their offer of Gaza too funnily enough)

What land has israel "stolen"? The prior peace discussions were all about land swaps.
I haven't justified any settlements. They shouldn't be there. If israel wants the land, it should be annexed with equal rights for all (annexation not a good idea for many many reasons) but you can't move civilian population to area under military rule. I haven't justified it.

Israel, especially under the current government and over recent years, is allowing the extremist settlers to break the law and use violence with impunity. Of course that's wrong

But that's quite different from a ridiculous demand for israel to unilaterally withdraw within a year. It should be the ultimate goal but there are a million things to be sorted out before that can happen.

We need a process not a ridiculous resolution. There are legitinate israeli concerns. Plus it would be a disaster for Palestinians too. This doesn't help move the needle in the slightest.

You’re losing me

This thread is about UNs resolution for Israel to stop occupying West Bank. Settlements are in this land.

Yes I did and mumsnet obviously did too because it has been deleted. Not reported by me btw

Sooo we can say Allah is with the Palestinians but we can't say God is with the Israelis
Wow Mumsnet. Way to go!!

Let's see. I reported the Allah comment - interesting to see if that will be deleted. If it's good for the geese, should be good for the gander, right? If it's not I'll be complaining of bias, that's for sure.
Ridiculous.
I don't think they even read them to be honest. Wasn't hateful or offensive to say God is with the Israelis anymore than to say Allah is with the Palestinians.

Well, no, I'm am atheist.
I don't think it's helpful to bring any god into it personally - you don't know who god is siding with, personally I'd hope god wouldn't take sides but would help achieve peace - but if you're gonna mention one, you can mention the other. Only fair.
