I see the old thread is sadly almost full. I wonder how many of these I will start? 😢

I asked and apparently the words "cretin" and "ethnic cleansing" are not allowed.

Good to know 🤔

We're not allowed to say ethnic cleansing anymore? That's ridiculous.

Funny when I got a reply to a report I did today and the reply said “It's also important that users feel they can express their feelings without fear”

so why cant you express how you feel if you feel that a country is ethnic cleansing ?

also, the word cretin was a poster or a politician? I’m sure worse things than cretin have been said in mn about politicians

I used that word referring to the people taking the boat tour to watch Gaza being bombed whilst talking about taking the land for Israel. It's ableist apparently. I won't use it again.

I'm more disturbed about the term ethnic cleansing being banned. I didn't see that coming. I mean I was referring to people who were on a boat trip looking at Gaza being bombed and talking about how they planned to take over Gaza and live there. I'm not sure how else to describe that.

AhNowTed · 23/09/2024 17:01

I'm not sure either @ConnieCounter given the leaders of the boat tour say so themselves publicly and without shame.

Scirocco · 23/09/2024 17:17

Can we refer to them as having a morality impairment?

@ScrollingLeaves

She's one of the original settlers.

Numerous interviews and videos online. Promotes ethnic cleansing.

"“No Arab, I’m speaking about more than two million Arabs. They will not stay there,” Weiss said. “We Jews will be in Gaza.”

That is extremely disturbing and ugly behaviour. Both sides are guilty of disturbing, ugly behaviour. It’s very sad but there are extremists on both sides .

Sound hollow and insincere

Well I can’t help what a random person on mumsnet thinks about my sincerity.
What ever your assumptions my statement is still true. And instead of acknowledging the point I made you chose to imply I’m insincere.

It may be that ‘cretin’ used disparagingly is not seen as wrong because of the feelings of the person who is being called that, but because it is now really an outlawed word as it used to be used as an insult based on a cruel reference severely mentally disabled people.
(Clearly you did not intend any ill will towards such people though.)

ToBeDetermined · 23/09/2024 20:41

I wonder why “useful idiot” isn’t banned then? Have seen that going the rounds on MN. “Idiot” is also offensive and ableist.

It's often used about other posters too, rather than genuinely awful people in news reports.

What point were you trying to make? You basically just said there are bad Palestinians too so...so what? I think it's reasonable to interpret your post as either minimising what these extremists are doing or justifying it because other people are bad too.

Yes, I think it is usually directed at posters or Trump.

I think my point was really very clear . You prefer to focus only on Israelis who behave in terrible ways and refer to anyone who mentions an alternative view as “minimising “ or “justifying “ . The suffering in Gaza is horrific but the ridiculous way some people police the threads and only permit criticism of Israel has become very predictable.

Totally know what you mean. It stops some posting. We all have different views and yet some don't accept that at all, try to police the threads, and tell people what they think they are saying 🙄

If you posted a video of Palestinians on a boat watching a part of Israel getting bombed whilst they discussed their plans to steal the land my contribution wouldn't be "but Israelis are bad too full stop". Because it's a pointless contribution unless you're trying to make the point that it isn't actually that bad actually because other people are probably bad too.

I might not have commented only you often make posts like this.

To be honest - if people posted a video of some really horrendous behaviour from Palestinians and then spent time discussing the horrible behaviour as if it was in some way typical of Palestinians I probably would want to say “They’re not representative of all Palestinians - they’re are extremists on both sides”.
This thread is all about the terrible things Israel is doing….. I understand people want to vent and share their feelings but I do think it is a bit of an echo chamber …

stormy4319trevor · 23/09/2024 22:10

@Limesodaagain There are extremists on both sides, you are right. I think the focus on Israeli bad behaviour is because they have the stronger position and are able to enact this bad behaviour through the occupation. Only one side is starving and dying in huge numbers. You can criticise Palestinians as @ConnieCounter has said, but what does this achieve for you? Is it a justification for continuing the occupation or the current approach to Gaza?

There was a separate bunch of threads about what Hamas were doing - 'The reality of Hamas', or something like that. This thread's 'The reality of what Israel is doing ', so the post content focusing on the actions of Israeli forces and other groups shouldn't be unexpected.

Sorry - I am not “criticising Palestinians “. I am criticising extremists on both sides. As to what I am hoping to achieve…not much sadly. I’ve seen some really quite unpleasant examples of anti semitism during marches in London and I think the rhetoric in real life situations here in UK has become inflammatory and potentially dangerous. It’s right to care about the Gazan people but there’s a relish in describing every piece of Israeli wrong doing that seems unbalanced to me. Especially while Hamas are still holding hostages.

There is no part of me that relishes bearing witness to any of this.

No - I am not pointing at anyone. It’s more the thread title and the relentless links . I understand that you may feel it is bearing witness.

stormy4319trevor · 23/09/2024 22:38

@Limesodaagain I can't agree with 'relish' either. People are horrified and grieved. I understand you think there's a lack of balance. I also agree with your view that there are extremists on all sides. But the reality is there is a catastrophe happening right now to the Palestinian people, and resolving that is the priority for many people, not seeking reasons to blame them for any extremists in their midst. Nor should Israelis be blamed for the extremists amongst them, but I think discussing the actions of aggressive settlers does not do that.
