Petition: For the United Kingdom to recognise the state of Palestine immediately

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/653509

Of the 27-members of the European Union, Spain, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Cyprus, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria have already recognised a Palestinian state. Malta and Slovenia have indicated they could follow.

Britain, France and Australia have said they are considering recognition.

Thank you! That petition is really clocking up the the numbers.

It's been around since February 2024 at least and signatures are also heavily London centric.

UK Government response is in the link and the petition will change nothing at all.

Well it has reached the level for a debate in the HoC and it won’t be THIS government that debate it, will it.

Saw that and wondered why the numbers are increasing quickly now- over 10,000 this evening alone. SM suddenly picking it up with actions of Ireland / Spain / Norway?
Appreciate it won’t get debated prior to election but still potential to send a clear message to next government.

Thank you

This petition is a completely pointless waste of time.

UK foreign policy on Israel / Palestine will not change until US policy does. And that certainly isn’t going to happen any time soon.

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 28/05/2024 22:17

As above this is an utterly futile endeavour. The UK helped create the state of Israel and is just a running dog behind the US which props up the whole shitshow. The rights and wrongs notwithstanding, it all seems useless

It is never a waste of time to use peaceful and legitimate measures to stand up for what you believe to be right.

Every person who says they believe Palestine should be recognised as its own state, every voice expressing that the UK government is wrong not to take a different path, is one more person contributing to the pressure on the government to change its course, and one more person who can look back at this dark time and know that they did something to say that they did not support the horrors being unleashed on civilians in Palestine.

"Whoever of you sees wrong being committed, let him change it with his hand. If he is unable to do that, then with his tongue, and if he is unable to do that, then with his heart."

Userxyd · 29/05/2024 06:01

I believe the state of Palestine should be recognised but don't understand why abyone thinks now is the time to do it, in the middle of atrocious violence while they are keeping 123 Israelis underground subjecting them to appalling violence??
If my kids are having a tantrum or fighting and screaming for something, even if I was going to give it to them, I would absolutely not let them have it until they calmed down and started behaving well again.
This just incentivises and rewards brutal horrific terrorism and no matter how much I sympathised with their fight against Israeli oppression, I could never support this now.

I cannot understand anyone who waves the Palestine flag or signs this petition at this point in time- we should be holding onto this to use as incentive to stop the violence.

ruby1957 · 29/05/2024 07:00

seems pointless given this statement by the government -

All petitions will close at 00.01am on Thursday 30 May.There will be a General Election on Thursday 4 July. This means that Parliament has to be dissolved and that all parliamentary business – including petitions – will stop.

I assume petitions that are currently 'live' will need to be re-started after the GE.

I assume on hold onto it until a new government is formed. I think labour are more likely to look at this if they get into government

Hamas are not Palestine, why is waving the Palestinian flag an issue? This is the time to wave their flag and show to the innocent civilians in Gaza who are suffering unimaginable pain and horror that they are seen, they are not alone, that we are with them. Recognising the state of Palestine is not a tool to bargain with. This is not about Hamas, this about the future of Palestine, about giving Palestine a better leg to stand on, when, after the current conflict and peace negotiations and negotiations on the future of the region start.

If my kids are having a tantrum or fighting and screaming for something, even if I was going to give it to them, I would absolutely not let them have it until they calmed down and started behaving well again.
Can't believe you have compared the current horrific conflict to a tantrumming toddler!

It's a Parliamentary debate when petitions reach 100,000 minimum.

Not a Government debate which is exclusive and not done on the floor of the Commons. 🤦‍♂️

DownNative · 29/05/2024 10:23

Almost 2,000 signatures come from various countries outside the UK - China, Saudi Arabia and Belgium amongst others.

Kier Starmer is the 998th signature.

Most of the 160k ish UK sigs are from London area which means it's not representative of the United Kingdom as a whole.

Parkingt111 · 29/05/2024 11:05

It might have picked up traction after the massacre in Rafah
I have seen people post about it on social media who I haven't seen previously speak about Gaza.
Almost everyone has 'All Eyes On Rafah'

Maybe Israel could start by releasing the 10,000 Palestinian hostages.

youngones1 · 29/05/2024 11:09

Let's sign this petition and vote for the Libs Dems the only Uk party not backing the genocide.

The timing is unfortunate. I sincerely doubt any petitions will be debated by any Government during an election period and, post election, there will be a lot of governance business - eg swearing in of new MPs, forming the cabinet etc that will take up parliamentary time....

The data tells us Starmer is the 998th signature.

I think recognition of Palestine is an excellent idea. If Netanyahu were not a maniac he would welcome it too. It would mean millions of Palestinians would cease to be refugees, as they would be Palestinians in their own state. And it would be the responsibility of the ruling party, ie the PA to deal with Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
