Petition: For the United Kingdom to recognise the state of Palestine immediately

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/653509

Of the 27-members of the European Union, Spain, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Cyprus, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria have already recognised a Palestinian state. Malta and Slovenia have indicated they could follow.

Britain, France and Australia have said they are considering recognition.

Netanyahu might well be defeated in the next election. The populace have the freedom to consign him to history if they want to.

Right but should we get rid of Israels statehood until they do and until they prove that their new government is more to our tastes, get rid of all settlements and end their illegal occupations and blockades? Because again that is what you are suggesting for Palestinians, that they earn their statehood by performing in a way you approve of.

And will the Knesset be purged of those who have openly supported Netanyahu in his actions - or will it only be Netanyahu who is the fall guy?

@Tryonemoretime
If the Palestinians see international acceptance that Gaza and the WB are their “state” - won’t this mean they are less likely to accept a Hamas mark 2 ? If you’re worried about free elections- there can be peace keeping troops to support this.

And the answer to my questions?
Because you can be a woman free to work and voice your opinions under Israeli law and you can watch your girls grow up to be free. You can be as gay as you want to be under Israeli leadership. There is precious little freedom under Hamas government.

I think the women in gaza are far more worried about not being bombed by the oh so moral and democratic bomb of Israel

Please can you provide a link for that?

The thing about recognising a Palestinian state is the question of it’s borders etc. lets say every country in the world recognises a Palestinian state except Israel the best Palestinians could hope for is the Gaza strip and parts of the West Bank. No-one could seriously impel Israel to cede territory to the nascent Palestinian state.

They could in theory, build a giant wall, create a DMZ and basically ignore both areas. They would be well within their rights to not lift a finger for Gaza or the west bank, they would be a separate country after all and not the responsibility of Israel.

I would hope a path to a 2 state solution would still be a possibility at some point. Maybe this could encourage that, I don’t know but the reality is there is no guarantee about the government of that entity and no guarantee that a further attack isn’t launched and no guarantee that Israel wouldn’t react with the same force it’s used now.

Recognising that something exists is an important step towards defining it.

And yes, Israel should stop occupying the West Bank and give that land back to the Palestinians.

Gaza, the West Bank, international recognition, a vote at the UN, protection against further aggression and occupation... sounds like a better deal than oppression, occupation and death.

Don't you think Israel ignoring both areas would be better than what Israel have been doing? I think Palestinians would feel a heck of a lot safer knowing that the IDF won't break into their house in the middle of the night and take their sons or that settlers won't decide that they want their land and hassle them until they leave. They wouldn't have to ask and be denied permission to build houses and school and Wells or collect rainwater. I think it would be a huge sigh of relief for them to actually feel safe, properly safe for once.

I don't know where this idea comes from that Palestinians want to rely on Israel? Israel have been bombing their infrastructure for years, stunting their development for years, Israel have been purposefully restricting their economy for years. Imagine no more meddling, you can build a medical centre and have it stay there, you can import all of the medicines and medical equipment that you need, Drs are free to come and go, something so simple that we take for granted but something that Israel have denied the people of Gaza for a long time. Those restrictions gone, how fantastic would that be!

There is no guarantee that Israel won't attack Palestinians in the future either, no guarantee that settlers would accept it and behave graciously, they have been furiously trying to block aid and starve people while salivating over the idea of homes in Gaza for the past few months, these are not stable people. There will need to be a leap of faith on both behalfs.

Thanks for sharing this - I was delighted to see there was a petition for it here. It was momentous when Ireland, Norway and Spain recognised Palestine; and their Ambassador was very moving in expressing his joy when the UN voted in favour of Palestine. The news conference given by the Irish Leaders was superb when they announced it. Small glimmers of hope - I hope it brings a moment of comfort to those poor civillians who must be feeling so desolate in Palestine.

keenforhelp · 22/06/2024 10:17

Countries can recognise any state they like but this is merely political posturing and it is not really up to them.
And it won't happen until Hamas disband and a non terrorist regime se up in Gaza . Gaza itself won't be called a state as it is run by a proscribed terrorist organisation.

HowIrresponsible · 04/07/2024 23:25

No. It's not a state and never was and it has a terrorist organisation ruling it.

Oystercavity · 04/07/2024 23:42

Yes I don't think this petition (rightfully ) will gain traction.

@therealcookiemonster
'I think the women in gaza are far more worried about not being bombed by the oh so moral and democratic bomb of Israel'.....
If it wasn't for the air defence over Israel, I rather think that the women in Israel would be very worried about being bombed by Hamas. Hamas regularly sends rockets to Israel but they are taken down before they can do any damage. In the meantime, I think that women and girls are staying away from music festivals....

I believe the state of Palestine should be recognised but don't understand why abyone thinks now is the time to do it, in the middle of atrocious violence while they are keeping 123 Israelis underground subjecting them to appalling violence??
If my kids are having a tantrum or fighting and screaming for something, even if I was going to give it to them, I would absolutely not let them have it until they calmed down and started behaving well again.
This just incentivises and rewards brutal horrific terrorism and no matter how much I sympathised with their fight against Israeli oppression, I could never support this now.

I cannot understand anyone who waves the Palestine flag or signs this petition at this point in time- we should be holding onto this to use as incentive to stop the violence.

This.

Whilst their is a conflict raging. Sort the release of the hostages and get around the table for ceasefire negotiations first.
