University students rising up against ties with Israel (title edited by MNHQ at request of OP)

Many university students are raising up against the ties their universities have with Israel. Students are asking for this agreements to stop
I can see this is happening in USA which has been in the news quite a lot but I can also read news about Paris as well as UK.

I really doubt much will change but I’m glad people are against these agreements. We can’t change what Israel / Hamas do. But we should be able to change what our governments / universities do.

Saying that zionists don't deserve to live in peace while Palestinians are being killed still isn't great though, it's saying everyone who believes in the existence of a Jewish state needs to be punished.

Not as bad as what he actually said though.

https://twitter.com/realDailyWire/status/1783638100700172365/mediaViewer?currentTweet=1783638100700172365&currentTweetUser=realDailyWire

"Zionists don't deserve to live. The same way we're comfortable with accepting that Nazis don't deserve to live, fascists don't deserve to live, racists don't deserve to live, zionists, they shouldn't live in this world. If we're truly living in it, if we're truly living life, if we're truly living in this world in order to achieve peace the existence of Nazis, white supremacists, zionists - these are all the same people - the existence of them and the projects they have built I.e. Israel, its all antithetical to peace. And so yes I feel very comfortable calling for those people to die."

He/she/they is evidently an ignorant zealot, and young, who should not be given any platform. In speaking of Zionists he might be thinking of the people who are the settlers in the West Bank killing Palestinians there and taking their homes though rather than the Israeli State itself and an Israeli homeland.

noblegiraffe · 01/05/2024 10:01

I don’t think openly saying a group of people don’t deserve to live makes you ignorant, rather it makes you dangerous.

He also said that zionists are lucky he doesn't gun them down on the street. Is he walking the streets of the West Bank?

Two different stories that add up. (They’re in different locations) I do believe protestors aren’t against Jewish. They’re against those that are there trying to cause trouble regardless of their faith

Edited

So because one Jewish guy claims on twitter he hasn't experienced any antisemitic harassment, that must mean that absolutely none of the protestors are "against Jewish" and anyone who claims to have experienced anti-Semitism must be causing trouble.

He/she seems a whacko student high on identities and having a cause. Note his he/she/they pronoun announcement at the start. How it is his/her ignorant voice out there being broadcast is a mystery.

Channel 4 did a programme on the protests in Columbia a couple of weeks ago. Paraic O'Brien was there interviewing and following a Palestinian and a Jewish student who were in classes together but obviously at opposite sides of the conflict. You could tell they respected each other on a personal level but were struggling with their current positions and friendship within all that. It was very good and was done just as things were getting heated. He also interviewed a pro Israeli counter protestor who was not a student at Columbia but spent his day driving around the area with a truck displaying a ticker tape of students he viewed as anti-Semitic with their pictures, names, addresses and contact details. I thought this was outrageous that he could do this putting these students at risk. I could not understand how the college let him do that.

And yes the guy in the crop top and keffiyeh - is the mention of the "crop top" needed?

Definitely a lesson in how not to deal with these kinds of protests instead of being the calm voice and deescalating they have clearly fanned the flames. I have stayed in Columbia University in the 90s when I was a student and it is right up at the top of Manhattan next to Harlem which back then was a very rough area. The university has always worked so well in that community and supported young black locals to get access. Sad to see this

Actually, the university spent over a week negotiating with the protesters, attempting to de-escalate, and the students did nothing but escalate. Columbia offered them the chance to walk away from the illegal encampment with no consequences. In response, the students smashed their way into an academic building, vandalized it, and forcibly ejected the university employees from the building.

I'm a New Yorker, and I'm sure I know that area better than you do. Columbia is one of the main reasons the area has improved so much, and it continues to provide good jobs and academic opportunities for people in the neighborhood.

Not only that, Michael Tracey isn't even Jewish! He's a shit stirring grifter and his favourite platform to spout his nonsense? Tucker Carlson's show on Fox News.

He has an agenda - in this case pretending he's Jewish to minimise antisemitism - and his little stunt was to provoke this kind of reaction.

Fair enough but the optics are a PR disaster for the University

any comment about those that are setting fireworks at the tents of those protesting?

I saw an Al Jazeera report about UCLA with a commentator who seemed to be speaking from the US who said the counter protesters do not appear to be other students but a vigilante group.

No one ever wants to believe Al Jazeera, but looking at their footage itself, it has all become far too violent there ( who ever is involved).

This is the film footage I saw from Al Jazeera English.
Violent clashes erupt at UCLA between pro-Israel and pro-Palestine supporters

Please can anyone explain the meaning of a yellow flag with a crown saying Messiah? What would its intended message be in a protest setting rather than a simple message of solidarity with Israel conveyed by an Israeli flag?

Fair enough. I still think the same. Many of them against those causing trouble (setting fireworks against tents) independently of their faith

It's better than letting them escalate further, continue occupying the building, and disrupt classes. Ideally, they should have stopped the recreation of the first encampment after it was broken up. Letting the students recreate it was a grave error.

That is intentionally dangerous.

ScrollingLeaves · 01/05/2024 11:32

There could be students inside those tents and one spark l from those fireworks could set those tents alight. The image showed that person aiming at the area where the tents are.

From what I have seen, what started as a peaceful protest has become far too dangerous.

ScrollingLeaves · 01/05/2024 11:34

There are evidently some people who ought to be arrested if they can be identified, like the rocket firework throwers.

UCLA 200 pro Israel supporters attacking those in the protestors camp

apparently they’ve been blasting noises for a while and pepper spraying people.

shouldn’t the police and UCLA security stop these kind of acts?

It is too violent. I wonder if those people have just come in to make trouble for fun?

That is attacking not protesting as were the fireworks thrown at tents.

UCLA will probably have taken the ‘both sides’ line, but that is not what we seem to see in the clip. The Al Jazeera reporter from the USA said these counter protesters appeared not to be students.

Imo they want the protesters gone so by causing trouble they’re achieving that the security / police have to go and kick everyone out as there shouldn’t be trouble in their grounds.

I bet the ‘counter protestors’ who threw fireworks, beat people up, etc, are not students and are most likely some kind of rent a mob, paid to be there.

It’s so disingenuous with the media pushing a “both sides” narrative.

Well, yes, or at least ask the question.

Please could someone say what the Yellow flags with a Crown and ‘Messiah’ mean in this protest context? Why not an ordinary Israeli flag?

'The LA Times reports that the counter-demonstrators who attacked the barricades were wearing black outfits and white masks.

It said that the protesters in the encampment, in helmets and goggles and wielding pieces of wood, attempted to defend the perimeter.

Video footage from Fox News shows the attackers throwing pieces of wood at the encampments and at least one shooting a firework at it. They threw barricade fences and jousted with the encampment protesters.

According to footage from Fox News, a group of men attacked the pro-Palestinian encampment shortly after midnight.

Someone shot a firework at the encampment, which exploded. Others used pepper spray against the protesters, with some of them spraying it in return. The men forcefully tore down the camp while the protesters attempted to repair it.

Several loud explosions were heard to go off, as students screamed.

Fox News reported that campus security were not present on the scene.

The clashes continued for several hours.'

From The Guardian today. It sounds volatile and I pray nobody gets seriously hurt.
