University students rising up against ties with Israel (title edited by MNHQ at request of OP)

Many university students are raising up against the ties their universities have with Israel. Students are asking for this agreements to stop
I can see this is happening in USA which has been in the news quite a lot but I can also read news about Paris as well as UK.

I really doubt much will change but I’m glad people are against these agreements. We can’t change what Israel / Hamas do. But we should be able to change what our governments / universities do.

@Murica what is the meaning of that tweet, “from darkness to light” ?

Great they've time for a party 🙄reminiscent of the Israelis partying next to the humanitarian aid trucks they were blocking.
Most of them also look far too old to be students

EllaDisenchanted · 29/04/2024 19:47
  1. calling for/wishing for someone to be raped is wrong, always. no ifs no buts. She should be removed from the pro Israel demonstration
  2. the mice thing is weird, but the video really doesn’t show anything except a backpack with mice, it’s completely hearsay that ‘zionists threw it’. Whoever did it frankly it is a bizarre action.
  3. @Parkingt111 imo extremely unlikely to be referencing Netanyahu - from darkness to light is a very common Jewish idea, referenced in multiple ways eg a little light dispels a lot of darkness, the light of the chanuka candles bringing hope , we light candles on the anniversary of loved ones deaths (yahrtzeit candles), we light a candle after Shabbat to bring the holy light of Shabbat into the week.

There was a call for Pro Israeli protesters to counter the camps.

There videos of many unpleasant things:

  • wishing rape on someone,
  • videos of pushing,
  • a counter protester calling some black student the N-word and spitting on them.

And many more.

@EllaDisenchanted thank you for that explanation Ella

Thanks. Just over 6 months until the American election in November, interesting move by the 20 House Democrats. I guess the calculation is that young people don't vote and these guys won't vote for Biden.

The group is led by Josh Gottheimer.
His biggest campaign funder is American Israel Public Affairs Cmte with a donation this(2023-4) year of $212,559 . He is ranked number 2 in the house in terms of which of them got the most financial support in terms of pro Israeli bodies. He has got a whopping $788,476 in this year 2023-4.

Yup, AIPAC was once named by Fortune magazine as the 2nd most powerful lobby group in Washington.

There was a documentary filmed by using an undercover reporter in 2017 about "the Lobby". Here is a one hour edit taken from the longer version which focuses on American universities.

The Israel Lobby in Academia: Film screening

NOTE: The video was a little choppy when we were livestreaming, so we've uploaded an updated version of this event with smooth video here: https://youtu.be/x...

The US is an actual settler-colonialist state built on the genuine decimation of its indigenous peoples. Any of these protestors who is not indigenous or who is not descended from someone forcibly brought to the US should have the courage of their convictions and get out of the country. At least Jewish people are indigenous to Israel (and much more of Palestine) and only existed as a diaspora due to millennia of expulsion, enslavement and persecution.

BathshebaEverdene1 · 30/04/2024 06:46

Do you ever think that the word "Zionist" is used instead of another word, that if it were used would make the speaker or writer look anti Semitic? But they say Zionist so it's OK.

I daresay most of them would be hard pushed to define " Zionist" anyway.

Those are small sums of money in American politics! Funny isn't it how anyone who supports Israel is part of a 'lobby'. He is also part of the pro-gun control 'lobby', pro reproductive right 'lobby' , pro Uigyur human rights 'lobby' and many others. People in politics have opinions. The idea that politicians in the united states are somehow controlled by Israel takes us to a dark place.

This kind of free speech @Finallyloggedin ?x.com/efischberger/status/1781287784897991134?s=46 I can’t get past this. I’m thinking of going down south to bear witness to what happened in the kibbutzim but I don’t know if I have the courage, I’ve read first and watched first hand testimony, and that is enough to give me nightmares, but part of me feels an obligation. I’m still sitting in my 9 year olds room every night til he goes to sleep because his nightmares started up again from the booms from Iran, and these people are wishing for thousands more October 7ths? If they wanted peace that is the absolute last thing they should wish for. I’ve seen pictures of final solution next to an Israel flag, that video of khymeini saying zionists don’t deserve to live, calls to burn tel Aviv to the ground, assaults on Jewish and Israeli students, calls of nazi bitches, Israeli and jewish students barred from entering - how is any of this promoting peace??? I hear scirocco’s descriptions of how they rally for Palestine, and I hear a description of a peace march. This isn’t that, it’s a hate demonstration.

@BelleHathor i do not excuse any of those things belle, nor stand by them, none of them are acceptable.

Scirocco · 30/04/2024 07:53

@EllaDisenchanted I am so, so sorry that your son has to deal with this - no child should. He's a very brave boy with a very brave mum, and I keep you and your family in my duas when I pray for peace.

If it would help, I can look out some of my links about helping children cope with trauma like this - do you think it would help if I put some online resources in a separate thread when I get back from work tonight?

I've seen solidarity events around the world. I've also seen hate crimes around the world. In my opinion, anyone calling for thousands of October 7ths, perpetrating violence against innocent Jewish and Israeli people, or acting to cause fear and alarm to them, should be arrested and removed. That's not peaceful protest. It's not even non-violent resistance. It's hatred. And has no place on a movement for peace. I am sorry you and others are seeing and experiencing this.

Thank you scirocco, yes, that would be appreciated. I hold you and yours in my prayers too, and pray for peace, for all of us.

BelleHathor · 30/04/2024 08:24

@EllaDisenchanted I completely echo what Scirocco said and I am sorry that your family is going through that ❤.

I 100% know that you don't and wouldn't support any of the things that the counter protestors said and did as you've always come across as kind and thoughtful.

I don't support or condone any of the antisemitic things that have been said by protestors and would fully support the FBI/NYPD tracking those men down via the CCTV.

We are in an environment where there is so much fear, anger and rage and I wish we had leaders in the World who could try and calm the situation down.

Finallyloggedin · 30/04/2024 09:21

@EllaDisenchanted I just watched the video you posted. That’s terrible and I don’t condone that. I can’t even imagine why someone would think or say it. Although I still don’t think that the vast, vast majority of student protesters (I’m not sure if the people in the video were, it looked like they were on the street but I could be wrong) think those things at all.

I’m very sorry to hear that your son is having nightmares. It’s awful how children are having to witness all this, it’s just terrible. None them deserve it. I saw a video of a poor Palestinian toddler who couldn’t stop shaking, she must have ptsd. I guess she will never recover from everything she has heard and seen day and night for almost seven months.

No children deserve what is happening and the world really is letting them all down.

EasterIssland · 30/04/2024 09:38

Agree with others. I believe bad apples there are in both sides. I support what the students are requesting (cutting ties with Israel companies and those in the arm industry) but I condemn those that are trying to push for an extremist protest.

also , sorry to hear what your son is going through @EllaDisenchanted

no child in the world should be going through what Palestinian and Israel children are going through. They deserve a better world than this one
