Conflict in the Middle East

Why do people think anti-isreal is the same as anti-semetic?

Just that. If I was anti-Iran, it is never called anti-Islamic.

SO, should Hamas surrender? They set off a war/ conflict (at least its most recent and intense phase) . Should they release Israeli hostages?

To those who are of the opinion that the majority of Gazans do not support Hamas, I would be really interested to see the evidence of this.

Do you have proof of the opposite? Normally when you make an accusation you’ve to prove it instead of requesting that the opposite is proven

how did they set off a conflict that has existed for 75 years. Did they also set off that idf raped women and children before 7-10? And the tortures?

⬆️ I posted an article above with results of a poll suggesting fairly high levels of support for Hamas, before the Israeli invasion.

Louloulouenna · 01/04/2024 19:07

@EasterIssland well yes, there is plenty of proof of the opposite as a quick Google will confirm

If I thought that suspected fighters would get a fair trial and civilians would be treated well and given access to aid and be able to return to their homes I would say yes, absolutely. However based on IDF behavior at Al Shifa recently (as well as other events) I think it’s unlikely this will be the case, which makes it pretty unpalatable for Hamas - they must know most of them will be executed. And there would need to be some idea of what should follow for the Palestinian people.

A quick snapshot of Pre-war stats from above linked paper:
When asked how much they trusted Hamas authorities, 44% of Gazans said they had no trust at all, and 23% had “not a lot of trust.” Only 29% expressed either a great deal or quite a lot of trust in their government. When it came to government corruption, 72% said they believed there was a large or medium amount of corruption in government institutions, and only a minority thought the government was taking meaningful steps to address the problem.

So … can I have a proof from verified sources of your accusations?

Dulra · 01/04/2024 19:20

Can I just add I find it really unpalatable that people are looking for this information at a time when Gazans are starving to death, being killed and displaced. I mean what do people expect to happen to get this information? Oh sorry to bother you just while you've got a break there from being bombed, displaced and starved could you answer a few quick questions on your opinion of Hamas 🙄

Teddleshon · 01/04/2024 19:24

Poll after poll after poll confirms majority support for Hamas. Have you heard the tapes of the gleeful calls to family by the perpetrators of October 7? Jesus I wish I hadn’t , they will stay with me forever.

Where is the movement in Gaza to get rid of these bastards.

I've just posted two polls which suggest otherwise

Are you for real? The people are starving to death what kind of sick twisted statement is that!

I agree but being starved to death would be more accurate.

The poll I posted is more current and the same poll referenced by a number of news sources is not poll after poll....
But I'm finished discussing this. I refuse to speculate about the thoughts of a people that are currently trying to survive in a hell on earth in Gaza

midgetastic · 01/04/2024 19:40

I would expect the majority of Palestinians to now support Hamas - it isn't Hamas who is bombing them and starving them , it's someone Hamas says is their enemy

Some might want to say Hamas started it - so the Palestinians should blame Hamas but it doesn't work like that - this dispute has gone on for decades and the Palestinians have seen Israel as the enemy - because of Israel's actions against them - for a very long time

I posted an AP article above which has been ignored. It suggests high levels of support for Hamas among Palestinians for and on 7th Oct, ie before the Israeli invasion.

midgetastic · 01/04/2024 19:56

Well that's because Isreal hasn't exactly been letting Palestinians get on with their lives before that , had they ?

Living in their houses, controlling their borders ( not the shared ones ) , over the last few decades for every Israeli killed by the troubles 10 Palestinians have been killed

I mean why would you expect the average Palestinian to not support Hamas given the history ?

Whilst it’s Palestinians it’s not Gaza but West Bank.
the comment I was replying to says Gazans support Hamas and 7-10 so the link you’ve posted wouldn’t apply.

Ah, so we've gone from "Palestinians don't support Hamas, there's no evidence for this, how dare you" to "Well who can blame them?"

And I posted an article (with stats before Oct 7th) which showed the opposite to yours, so all this speculation is getting us no where and does not change anything for Gazans atm

No, support is higher in the WB but far from non existent in Gaza:

Despite the devastation, 57% of respondents in Gaza and 82% in the West Bank believe Hamas was correct in launching the October attack, the poll indicated

I have posted two articles which suggest the complete opposite to yours so I think at this stage this needs to be dropped because neither of us know for sure which one is accurate

On that I can agree. But this determination by some on MN to believe that there is zero support for Hamas, even before Oct, among Gazans is really quite disingenuous.

And no, before you say it, that doesn't mean I agree with what Israel is doing or that all Gazans had it coming.
