https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/un-palestinian-refugee-agency-investigates-staff-suspected-role-israel-attacks-2024-01-26/

From the Guardian 5 hours ago;

"UK suspends UNRWA support after Israeli allegations The UK has temporarily paused future funding of UNRWA, saying it is “appalled by allegations that UNRWA staff were involved in the 7 October attack against Israel”.
A statement sent to the Guardian by the UK’s foreign, commonwealth and development office said:
'The UK is appalled by allegations that UNRWA staff were involved in the 7 October attack against Israel, a heinous act of terrorism that the UK government has repeatedly condemned.

The UK is temporarily pausing any future funding of UNRWA whilst we review these concerning allegations.'

We remain committed to getting humanitarian aid to the people in Gaza who desperately need it."

Interesting that this was designated as being a "terrorist organisation" by Israel... something that is specifically designed to help people.

Channel 4, as I'm sure you are aware, regularly performs investigations into some current subject matters. Sky News also does at times. (Edit to say this is for @Lanabigbanana as the post I'm replying to didn't appear.)

Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't, but it's a TV Channel, not an international court.

So pro Israeli posters only believe investigations by media channels when they find in favour of Israel's side of things? Is it? Because BBC Verify and others were touted around as very important when the pro-Israeli side thought they found in favour of their side of the hospital bomb/rocket story at the start of the conflict. They didn't, but truth doesn't seem to matter much for that side of the conflict.

I think everyone is well aware that Channel 4 (and also Sky) are not an international court.

Exactly what I was about to say, @ConnieCounter It is always the same when it comes to this ~ anything or anyone who happens to say different are suddenly not recognised

They are investigative journalists, not an international court, but more than just a tv channel and no doubt have passed on what they have found to the relevant agencies

"but more than just a tv channel"

No it's just a TV channel that earns money by sponsors/advertisers. The more 'scoops' they get, the more the viewing figures go up and the more they can charge their backers.

You can't apportion an altruistic rationale to a business organisation, just a profit motive.

Of course they aren't recognised when they have no authority !

based on your opinion rapes on 7-10 didn’t happen because

  1. You didn’t see videos of the rape
  2. An international court hasn’t said so

or these conditions only are required when it applies to Palestinians.

ps. I’m not denying the rapes. I’m just fed up of people that request proof of something happening in Palestine. When you display the proof they dismiss it but will happily accept anything that has happened in Israel and that Israel says because the conditions aren’t needed

"Not recognised" as in people who happen to be pro-Israel do not recognise/believe in the evidence of their investigations.

I am obviously not claiming that Channel 4 (or Sky!) have some type of authority ~ that is kind of laughable to even suggest in all honesty!

Are you suggesting that they came to their conclusion in an attempt to land a "scoop"??

We are all aware of how TV channels happen to function. But you are dismissing the fact that if they were spouting false information then that would severely damage their reputation as journalists... They have based their findings on the actual evidence

BackandForthRoundandRound · 07/02/2024 13:29

132 aid trucks being held up due to protesters... How nice preventing aid from reaching the starving population. (They directly attacked a lorry carrying aid the other day and also Israeli forces fired at an aid lorry the same day. Lovely.)

PeasfullPerson · 07/02/2024 13:36

Goodness me! I have a lot of sympathy for any friends and family of the hostages who are doing this out of desperation. But the IDF, or some sort of military presence should be ensuring that these trucks get through.

PeasfullPerson · 07/02/2024 13:36

We can protect shipping lanes, but we can’t make sure aid gets into Gaza.

Exactly... when it comes to losing money there is immediate action happening but silence when people are being deliberately starved and unable to access basic medicine and hygiene supplies.

Humdingerydoo · 07/02/2024 13:54

Channel 4 not having seen any evidence isn't the same as there not being an evidence. They just haven't been shown it.

Does anyone know what happened to UNRWAs investigation in December into the allegations that an UNRWA teacher and his family held a hostage for 50 days? I can't find any updates on it at all, just their original statement where they were outraged at the accusation.

Why is it so important that we do believe this? What influence does it have on anything?

I don't believe in the tooth Fairy but I do believe in the Loch Ness Monster. Now what does that achieve/not achieve?!

Let's see what the UN or the ICJ say shall we?

"Are you suggesting that they came to their conclusion in an attempt to land a "scoop"??"

I'm not suggesting anything - just telling you how commercial TV works, you can draw your own conclusions.

I'm well aware of what you are hinting at. It is not unexpected as it seems to be the norm when it is something not to Israel supporters' liking.

Haha and I believe in Big Foot...

My post was simply pointing out what I did. I don't expect you to believe it as that was included in what I stated. Especially with the hints about TV channels...

Glad you're here to tell us how commerical tv works 🙄but generally news programmes report on the news issues of the day I don't agree that what they cover is influenced by advertisements and sponsors. Most ethical journalists are there to uncover the truth and does require respecting fairness, impartiality and independence
