Conflict in the Middle East

IDF admits 'extensive collateral damage' in Christmas Eve refugee camp strikes

I first heard of this on Christmas Eve when someone shared an Instagram post on here I think. According to some posters we shouldn't believe Insta and the death figures will be unreliable coming from Gaza.
This was Israeli jets, presumably well trained professional pilots and they used the wrong type of munition? FFS

"Two strikes hit seven residential buildings in Maghazi, killing an estimated 86 Palestinians and injuring many more, the UN statement said. An unknown number of people were also believed to be trapped under the rubble."

All sound so familiar, in fact I've reached the point I don't believe the idiotic IDF and extremist Israeli Govt. More like it was just a giant FU from them. So brave using their air force to obliterate innocent people.

"Speaking to public broadcaster Kan news, an Israeli military official said: "The type of munition did not match the nature of the attack, causing extensive collateral damage that could have been avoided."
They said the incident was being investigated further.
Asked about the report, the IDF told the BBC that it "regrets the harm to uninvolved individuals, and is working to draw lessons from the incident".
The military said its jets had struck two targets adjacent to an area where Hamas operatives were located but that additional buildings were also hit during the strikes."

This story is absolutely disgusting. I'm sickened to my stomach by the IDF and their cheerleaders here.

Will any pro Israeli here even acknowledge that this was an atrocity or a war crime?

stomachamaleon · 28/12/2023 22:52

@ohfourfoxache shame on you...

They're coming for the Palestinians and no one that can change what is happening is speaking for them.

Bombs dropping 24/7, tens of thousands killed and injured, 1.8 million displaced, no food, no water, no medical care, no shelter and you're cheerleading for the death and destruction.

Shame on you.

ohfourfoxache · 28/12/2023 23:01

Really, shame on me?

Actually, in fairness you’re right. I haven’t done anything to resolve the problem

The only things I’ve done are write to my MP, corner him after our Remembrance Day parade. Sign countless petitions. Speak out against terrorism

But that’s not enough

Anything else you can suggest?

stomachamaleon · 28/12/2023 23:01

@FOJN

you're cheerleading for the death and destruction.

Where am I? I was addressing the ridiculousness of the contrast to German civilians and the drawing parallels to the Holocaust which is shameful.

That the poster had a post deleted and thinks their opinion is that important they have to write in again. Whilst quoting communist cuba. Instead of asking Mumsnet on pm.

So yes. Shameful behaviour.

ohfourfoxache · 28/12/2023 23:04

@stomachamaleon what the actual fuck has political orientation have to do with anything?

Where is your humanity?

Toothyfruity · 28/12/2023 23:05

@stomachamaleon what the actual fuck has political orientation have to do with anything?

You won't find any of that here when it comes to Palestinians.

It's messed up.

ohfourfoxache · 28/12/2023 23:09

Have we genuinely not learned anything from history?

WE HAVE SEEN THIS ALL BEFORE

Einstein’s definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results. If we carry on as we are, killing based on belief or accident of birth, we will always end up where we always have - in the shit

I’m tired of seeing suffering and grief and evil. We have to change

stomachamaleon · 28/12/2023 23:11

@ohfourfoxache what's cuba got to do with my 'humanity'.
I thought I explained earlier why I felt the way I did.
And made it clear I didn't support the destruction of families.

Why mention Germany?

It wasn't me that reported it btw. You upset a few people.

You should see the parallels some Israeli politicians are gleefully making with the Holocaust. Last week an Israeli Mayor said Gaza should be like Auschwitz. He's not the only one, early on another Israeli official promised Gaza a Holocaust.

https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/israeli-mayor-calls-for-turning-gaza-into-auschwitz-like-museum-prompting-rebuke/

Seems it's shameful to draw parallels if you object to the killing but fine if you can use them to glorify violence.

Quoting Niemöller at a time when the Palestinians are being massacred is shameful as is claiming Israel has no other choice but to kill innocent civilians.

Hellenika · 28/12/2023 23:14

Eh, IDF has been unapologetically and illegally dropping these 2,000 lb bombs since the start. The fact they have apologised for this one on Christmas Eve is first and foremost a sign of the international political pressure on them to rein it in.

So, as awful as it is, to me it’s a good sign they bothered to apologise and admit to it. It’s practically a guilty plea to the war crime of indiscriminate bombing. Will come in handy when the ICC gets going with its arrest warrants.

And the fact IDF felt the need to say this, well maybe it’s a hint at the cracks in the military. Nethanyu or the War Cabinet would never have preauthorised such a statement from IDF. This is an IDF spokesperson throwing their civilian leadership under the bus. It’s the actions of a professional soldier who is being a conscientious objector to war crimes.

This plus the teens refusing to sign up to IDF lately in the news plus the Israeli protests in Tel Aviv show that Nethanyu and his government may be facing civil unrest and military mutiny.

stomachamaleon · 28/12/2023 23:15

We continue to see it in lots of countries.
I hope you lobbied your mp about all of them.
And the conflicts that litter this world- what is it 55 conflicts in 38 conflict affected countries?
Good on you though.
Must keep you busy.

Pennina · 28/12/2023 23:18

FOJN · 28/12/2023 22:51

It's hard to take some of these posts seriously. The IDF are killing more Israelis than Hamas rockets at the moment. If the IDF are not shooting hostages they're killing each other in "friendly fire".

If posters think living with the threat of a rocket hitting your home is awful (it is) then why don't the same people have any empathy for the civilians who are literally being bombed to pieces and have nowhere safe to escape to.

Well they would do if Hamas hadn't spent all
the aid money on tunnels for themselves. and posters on this thread call the IDF c**nts!

TakeMe2Insanity · 28/12/2023 23:19

Parkingt111 · 28/12/2023 21:32

I have been looking at the ammunition that Israel has been using in Gaza and most say that the only comparison that can be made in recent times goes back to the bombing of Vietnam. That is how brutal the campaign has been
Whole residential buildings flattened with civilians inside.
At times up to a hundred killed in one go.
Even for those who support Israel's right to defend, I don't understand how they can support these strategies that are used where the collateral damage is at such a immense scale.
This does not look like self defence to me, it looks like revenge.

This!

stomachamaleon · 28/12/2023 23:19

Quoting nielmoller was to show that Germans were complicit and not the silent majority.
As there was no one left to speak up.
So you might want to ask before attacking.
How was it saying Israel's had no choice?
You have clearly misunderstood.

And I am not a member of the knesset or a politician so cannot speak for them. I think that speech he made was widely derided in Israel.

At no point have I glorified violence.

Tescos1 · 28/12/2023 23:22

If Hamas , surrendered then the war would be over ?

stomachamaleon · 28/12/2023 23:23

Do you know Israel well at all? It not that unusual it's just topical and civil unrest has been a regular and usual thing since March and the issues with the government and judiciary.

I think you are being somewhat melodramatic unless you can show 'military mutiny' or it's not just hyperbole and a smidge of wishful thinking.

It's war. This what happens when countries are at war. Do you think Hamas have made mistakes? Committed war crimes?

ohfourfoxache · 28/12/2023 23:24

@stomachamaleon bless you

I was simply illustrating that my view is not unique

And as for stating that I’m being “ridiculous”…well, we shall agree to disagree

One of our closest family friends growing up was German. She came over to the UK just after the war. Her father was called up in Germany and killed. She and her mother were both raped by German soldiers. Then the Russians came, and our friend was raped again. After the war she and her mum fled - they stole potatoes from fields and sheltered in barns. But they got to the UK

She had an absolutely horrendous time during the war, but when she realised the truth about the Holocaust it added an extra layer of injury. She was barely an adult, she had no power over what happened. But the horror stayed with her, and she never set foot in Germany again.

When the truth about what’s happening in Gaza comes to light, my heart absolutely breaks for the Israelis who will discover what their government has done. Not just to Palestinians - to Israelis as well. That sort of communal grief is extremely difficult to come to terms with

ohfourfoxache · 28/12/2023 23:26

@Pennina Oh! Like the tunnels that the Israelis built under hospitals themselves….in 1983?

Yep, that’s how the IDF knew that they were there

Israel has defended its people against ongoing attacks by terrorists. Why should this be something Israelis will feel pain over in the future? We feel pain over the death of our own people at Hamas' hands not just in October but all the murders (many equally violent) over the years.

You're not objecting to civilian deaths because a terrorist organisation didn't prioritise civilians in Gaza and because you're offended on behalf of the IDF?

You know the internet is forever, right?

FOJN · 28/12/2023 23:33

Tescos1 · 28/12/2023 23:22

Are you aware that the Israeli government is talking about the ethnic cleansing of Gaza as a humanitarian project now?

They're offering other countries money to take Gaza refugees, only people who want to leave "voluntarily" of course. Amazing that after so many years of controlling almost everything in Gaza that the Israeli government are suddenly claiming they want to promote individual autonomy for Gazan citizens.

Pennina · 28/12/2023 23:33

Is that a threat FOJN?

And why, no one answering here, are Hamas building tunnels and not providing shelter for their people?

ohfourfoxache · 28/12/2023 23:34

@Pennina do you understand the difference between terrorists and civilians? Because from your posts I suspect that the definitions have somehow escaped you?
