A Textbook Case of Genocide

It's been very clear from the start that Israel -through rhetoric, tactics, etc.- intended to commit the crime of genocide in Gaza.

This is so obvious now that there's absolutely no excuse to say otherwise.

Yet, shockingly, I see some posters on Mumsnet still disputing that fact, even after the best and most experienced experts in the field of genocide studies in the world confirmed it unequivocally to be so.

So, here are some links explaining in simple terms how what's been happening in Gaza is a textbook case of genocide:

A Textbook Case of Genocide
Israel has been explicit about what it’s carrying out in Gaza. Why isn’t the world listening?

https://jewishcurrents.org/a-textbook-case-of-genocide

By Raz Segal, associate professor of Holocaust and genocide studies at Stockton University and the endowed professor in the study of modern genocide.
(Note: this scholar is Jewish Israeli)

Here's another article in the Los Angeles Times where you can read the report of three leading Holocaust and genocide studies scholars: Victoria Sanford, Barry Trachtenberg and John Cox.

And for those who prefer it, here's an interview with Raz Segal where he explains the situation.

"A Textbook Case of Genocide": Israeli Holocaust Scholar Raz Segal Decries Israel's Assault on Gaza

Raz Segal, an Israeli expert in modern genocide, calls Israel's assault on Gaza a textbook case of "intent to commit genocide" and its rationalization of its...

Another very interesting article by Raz Segal.

Israel must stop weaponising the Holocaust
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/oct/24/israel-gaza-palestinians-holocaust

"A powerful state, with powerful allies and a powerful army, engaged in a retaliatory attack against stateless Palestinians under Israeli-settler colonial rule, military occupation and siege, is thus portrayed as powerless Jews in a struggle against Nazis."

"For one, it reminds us to center the voices and perspectives of those facing state violence and genocide. And the most urgent thing that Palestinians in Gaza now need is a ceasefire and an end to the Israeli bombing campaign."

Israel must stop weaponising the Holocaust | Raz Segal

Scholars of genocide are refusing to allow the dangerous use of the Holocaust to justify Israeli mass violence against Palestinians

This is completely disgusting and vile- to step up bombardement prior to an agreed pause in fighting. Just when the poor Gazans think they might have a reprieve…

Stepping up bombing at this point is beyond cruel. There has been a suggestion that a pause in bombing might make it more difficult for Israel to keep bombing Gaza- maybe they’re trying to bomb more of Gaza whilst they can get away with it. Let’s see what western journalists report when they get in with the pause in bombing.

Can’t see it changing the views of those who have hardened their hearts against the suffering of Palestinians though.

And yes, I’m glad that hostages are being released - for them and their families, and also it appears to be the only that has made Israel agree to a pause in fighting.

SharonEllis · 23/11/2023 07:28

If Israel had intended to commit genocide they would have done so and it would all be over by now. They would not have given warnings & tried to evacuate civilians in Gaza. Of course that has been imperfect, because Hamas is so fully embedded in civilian structures & gone out of their way to prevent civilians leaving. Hamas, on the other hand have clearly stated their intention to kill all Jews and have said they will repeat 7 October until they achieve their goal. That is intention to commit genocide. If you want other examples, see Darfur, genocide ongoing right now.

Are we going to keep going over & over this?

SharonEllis · 23/11/2023 07:30

Refuting some of the 'experts' referred to.

Agreed, when will Israel release the 10,000 Palestinians they have taken hostage?

Happyvalleyfan · 23/11/2023 07:44

Let’s see what ICC have to say on the matter of genocide. The UN have their view. Still, an awful lot of killing of innocent civilians. Not sure you have to completely exterminate a population for it to be called genocide though?

Israel can give warnings- but where can people go? And then why bomb those trying to move…

But if you want to talk about genocide,

“In order to be legitimate, Israel’s response must be strictly within the framework of international humanitarian law,” the UN experts said. “The presence of underground tunnels in parts of Gaza does not eliminate the civilian status of individuals and infrastructure that cannot be directly targeted nor suffer disproportionately,” they said.

OP's stance on genocide and this post countering the claim with reasons given for it.

How many actually read why the claim of genocide is used incorrectly and why the same people don't understand the stated aim of Hamas is for genocide?

backtowinter · 23/11/2023 11:12

@youngones1 What hostages have Israel taken?

Is there some confusion here between hostage and prisoner?

Many young men and children have been kidnapped over the years. Those hostages.

backtowinter · 23/11/2023 11:18

So Israel has kidnapped 10,000 people and held them as hostages.

Okay

The only thing which, for now, stops the Israeli government totally flattening Gaza is the USA and, to a certain level, the rest of the Western world.
Israel relies on the USA diplomatically, financially, and militarily.
You do know that no Gazans were allowed( by the Israeli government) to leave Gaza before 07/10. Fact. Please provide proof that Hamas are stopping them leaving. Anyway, leaving from where to where?
Do you also know that Gaza is 365 km 2, in term of land area, in which 2.3 millions live? This comparable to Hong Kong.
Yes Hamas has stated their genocidal intent, so has the Israeli government. The difference is the former has no means to achieve it and the latter could easily.
Of course I will keep going over and over this. You and others will not silence the rest of us. We should all be on the side of humanity, not ideology.

Oh dear. Its not true that gazans could not leave prior to 7/10. Many Gazans work in Israel (many were employed by people who were murdered in the 7/10 attack). Many also used to go to Israel for medical treatment. Fact = something that is true.

Let's talk about facts, shall we?
People, food, fuel, internet, power and water cannot leave or enter Gaza without permission from Israel. Only those belonging to certain categories, day labourers, traders, patients and their accompaniers, and aid workers, may apply for such exit permits. Therefore, no the Gazans are not free to leave whenever they want.
By the way, thousands of these workers were swept up in raids across Israel in the days after 7 October and imprisoned under the principle of administrative detention, which allows the arrest of suspects without charge or access to the evidence against them on the grounds that they may break the law in future. Fact. Some were then returned to Gaza. Fact.
This has an echo of South Africa apartheid. actually, Nelson Mandela said “The histories of our two peoples, Palestinian and South African, correspond in such painful and poignant ways.” Fact.

Do you know how difficult it is to get a permit? People die before their application is even looked at. Children are detained and told their father will have his work permit revoked unless they collaborate. They might be "allowed" but the process is made so difficult.

That's inhuman. I can't begin to imagine their suffering 💔
