Conflict in the Middle East

What are the people "Marching" in London every Saturday realistically hoping to achieve?

It won't change UK government policy. It won't result in a ceasefire in Gaza. It won't magically resolve the situation in Palestine.

Same as all the other big marches - War in Iraq etc. Changed nothing.

They wouldn't be marching at all

Mcmew · 08/11/2023 20:17

darksoya · 05/11/2023 10:34

Why have there been no marches against Russia, China, Myanmar? Why is no one "protesting" about what's going on in Yemen, Africa etc etc? Why does no one march for women in Afghanistan?

Precisely.

Prejudiced agaisnt English people:"

It's just facts isn't it? The discourse where I live is very different and has been for years. I mean even your government is cool with it all. I've been left shocked by some of the British media and how they have portrayed it all, it is all very gung-ho. I really don't see how pointing that out is prejudice especially when so many of you seem so proud of your views.

@OuiOuiKitty or....
'Under siege' it's at war. A war it's participating in. Hamas are fighting and firing rockets still.
'Committing apartheid' I disagree with that when it has two million plus Arabs living in Israel with equal rights.
'Under occupation' when did Israel leave? Leaving an infrastructure and a Palestinian government in power?
'Deliberating keeping them in poverty' they have billions in aid their own government withholds from them.
'Restricting their water' Israel left infrastructure and Hamas destroyed it. That's on Hamas. Why not ask Egypt to chip in then? Why on Israel?
'Infrastructure to build' Hamas can being racehorses in through the tunnels and rockets but no building equipment?

This is on Hamas. Israel are responding to a terrorist attack. Why has no other Middle Eastern country offered to help? Because of Hamas.

Equality! Good joke!

https://www.hrw.org/report/2021/04/27/threshold-crossed/israeli-authorities-and-crimes-apartheid-and-persecution
A few excerpts from the article:
"In the occupied West Bank, Israel subjects Palestinians to draconian military law and enforces segregation, largely prohibiting Palestinians from entering settlements. In the besieged Gaza Strip, Israel imposes a generalized closure, sharply restricting the movement of people and goods"
"the two tiered-citizenship structure and bifurcation of nationality and citizenship result in Palestinian citizens having a status inferior to Jewish citizens by law."
"including widespread restrictions on accessing land confiscated from them, home demolitions, and effective prohibitions on family reunification."
"the imposition of harsh conditions, including categorical denial of building permits in large parts of the West Ban"
"bars granting Israeli citizenship or long-term legal status to Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza who marry Israeli citizens or residents."

And it goes on and on and on

Precisely.

Because we're living in countries where the government is effectively supporting the genocide

Parkingt111 · 08/11/2023 20:26

Mcmew · 08/11/2023 20:17

Precisely.

Did you see our PM at the time flying over to Russia, China or Myanmar at the time and endorsing the horrors we are witnessing now
And still refusing to call for a ceasefire

Stomacharmeleon · 08/11/2023 20:36

@Parkingt111 I just feel like the hostages are very slowly being forgotten about (to an extent on both sides) and are becoming insignificant. That really hurts my heart. I can't bear to think what the families are going through.

You know until today I had hope. I didn't have any hope regarding hostages on Hamas but I did in the Israeli government in regards to negotiating a release of the hostages
But now my hope is slowly fading. It is clear that even for them the priority is destruction of Gaza over saving hostages.

But I did see again what @efacsen posted yesterday so maybe there will be a small pause agreed which will allow the release of some hostages,
Especially atleast the children

I think it is clear to me that Hamas will not be releasing the Israeli hostages . Disgusting ,evil behaviour by Hamas.

Parkingt111 · 08/11/2023 21:10

@Stomacharmeleon
This was on Al Jazeera
I know many on here dismiss it but in regards to hostages and negotiations I haven't seen them post anything that is negated by other mainstream media

Trulywonderful · 08/11/2023 21:19

I think a break in fighting is more likely once Israel has Gaza city properly enclosed. It is sounding like they are mostly there now. Israel would be less worried about fighters escaping and more weapons getting in once they complete this stage of their plan.

I can't actually imagine a ceasefire will be a ceasefire though. Even both side stop firing rockets/missiles at each other they will still shoot each other on sight.

There will have to be a pause though for the safe release of hostages.
The last two hostages that were released happened before Israeli troops entered Gaza.
I can't see how it would be possible now if the fighting doesn't cease even temporarily

FromEden · 08/11/2023 21:27

Well there's a good chance if I was a gay person in Gaza Israel would be starving me, denying me water, my house would be rubble and I'd know at least a few people that have been killed, that's if I was still alive or not lying injured on the floor of hospital being operated on without anaesthetic.

Also a good chance you'd already have met a similar fate to this poor man.

I agree with you but I think the troops on the ground and Hamas will still take shots at each other regardless. I don't think it will be a full out gun battle but guns will be used if the other side is feeling threatening. Should still be settling enough to get hostages out if both sides agree that.

The article stated next week
From what the IDF have said in terms of where they are in Gaza it seems like a realistic time scale
Also the article says Biden is having a bigger hand in it this times as it includes a number of American hostages
If you have noticed from quite a few days he has really strongly been pushing for tactical pauses

Xenia · 08/11/2023 21:52

Qatar/Hamas has suggested something like 12 hostages in return for 3 day cease fire. that is a pathetic offer and would just give Hamas 3 days to rearm and misuse the peace so I hope Israel has the sense to reject the offer. Israel has let journalists travel with them into and near the tunnels and the sheer extent of the Hamas terrorists and where they position the tunnel;s and weapons is all we really need to know about how dreadful they are compared to Israel.

@Xenia sadly I think even if journalists are allowed in and get footage of tunnels some on here will lay the blame at Israel and say they are planted to make Hamas look bad and justify their actions....

Parkingt111 · 08/11/2023 22:27

@Trulywonderful ignore all the above about a possible negotiation or release

At no point was anyone denying that Hamas has tunnels or weapons. And you might consider it a pathetic offer but there are children being held hostage
I'm sure their parents will disagree.
Can you imagine God forbid, being in their shoes

Stomacharmeleon · 08/11/2023 22:41

I imagine I would desperately grasp at anything.
I have just watched Hersh Goldberg's mum Rachel sing a lullaby she sang to him as a child and then as an adult.
They know he was desperately injured (he had his arm blown off) but have been told he is still alive. He tied his own tourniquet. His best friend was killed trying to throw back the grenades being thrown at them.
It's the not knowing I imagine. The mental torture. They are all someone's children.

Is it much kinder to blow them up or starve them or something? I don't understand your point to be honest. What I said was true, Israel only treats the right kind of gays well. They don't care about Palestinian gays and never have. I saw that Israel had introduced this 'oh we are so great to gays and they aren't so you should support us in bombing them all' propaganda but I don't understand why people are repeating it.
