Conflict in the Middle East

What are the people "Marching" in London every Saturday realistically hoping to achieve?

It won't change UK government policy. It won't result in a ceasefire in Gaza. It won't magically resolve the situation in Palestine.

Same as all the other big marches - War in Iraq etc. Changed nothing.

I am not against peaceful protests although not if they block roads and that sort of thing no matter what their cause. They can obviously go and sound off in speakers' corner too. This war started by Hamas might help show enemies in our midst in the UK. Hamas ex leaders sheltering in the UK we could expel and that kind of things so may be some good will come here in the UK.

OK, as a litmus test, how do you think you'd fare as a gay person in Gaza compared to Israel. And when were there last elections in Gaza.
Nobody on here is saying that Israel is perfect. But there is no equivalence with palestine.

Which side has killed the most people?

Not true
But I see how you ignored multiple other posts that I posted before this one and just focused on that

I was talking about the marches. The ones calling for a ceasefire. The focus is very much on Israel.

Well there's a good chance if I was a gay person in Gaza Israel would be starving me, denying me water, my house would be rubble and I'd know at least a few people that have been killed, that's if I was still alive or not lying injured on the floor of hospital being operated on without anaesthetic. I'm not saying that Israel doesn't treat Israelis well I'm saying they treat Palestinians like crap and have done for decades. Israel only care about the right type of gay people.

HeidiInTheBigCity · 08/11/2023 15:12

In Britain, demanding a ceasefire is apparently controversial or, as our PM says "disrespectful"!

Meanwhile in Israel ... they are, literally, holding pro ethnic cleansing demos:

Translation reads "Conquest! - Expulsion! - Settlement! (bring Israeli flags)" (Use google lens to verify this in case you do not believe me - it IS hard to believe!)

But you can't have a one sided ceasefire, and thats what it would be. Maybe a prisoner exchange that would lead to a ceasefire but that would probably mean some very dodgy people being released back to Hamas. Hamas and Netenyahu need to go. Netanyahu will probably be voted out but Hamas won't be gone until they are eliminated and their funding stops.

A lot of those prisoners are children, they are also held without a trial.

You can only remember the war victims of our wars of imperialism, not the one currently happening that our ally is perpetrating.

Jupitersstorm · 08/11/2023 16:07

This thread has completely gone off topic and is turning into another thread that seems to have the whole purpose of criticising Israel. There are lots of other threads about that - let's keep this one about the marches please.

I think this will lead to the rise of the Far Right in the UK”

Where have you been these past few year? The far right has already risen. Look at the government front bench.

"Where have you been these past few year? "

This is very possibly disrespectful.

..and probably wrong but I suppose if you're far enough left anyone to the right of centre seems a long way away.

ScribblingPixie · 08/11/2023 16:41

@quantumbutterfly I've seen Keir Starmer labelled far-right quite regularly on Twitter.

Sausagenbacon · 08/11/2023 17:00

I'm not too worried about being disrespected by someone who thinks our Government is Far Right.

DevonWindyWeather · 08/11/2023 17:10

OuiOuiKitty · 08/11/2023 13:17

I said that the leaders of both should be charged with war crimes.

You misunderstood, you suggested Israel and US etc shoukd pay to rebuild Gaza.... I meant maybe Hamas could contribute. Their leaders are multi millionaires living it up, Qatar etc... perhaps they should contribute from their stolen money?

You have totally lost the plot if you think 'Israel is just as bad as Hamas, if not worse'.

Good grief.

UpperLowerMiddleClass · 08/11/2023 17:47

Which side has killed the most people?

I think the more relevant question is to what extent each side has shown restraint and not killed the maximum number of people that it can.

Israel has massive military capacity and resource and could, essentially, kill as many Palestinians as it wants.

Hamas on the other hand has limited capacity and resources and, I think it’s fair to say, kills as many Israelis as it possibly can.

So - neither side comes out of that analysis well, but I think k it does show that the situation is more complicated that the sheer numbers killed by each side.

I don't think so. To me a country under siege and committing apartheid are really bad. Having 2.2million people under occupation and deliberately keeping them in poverty, restricting their water, killing them, bombing their schools and infrastructure every few years then not allowing them materials to rebuild, it's all disgusting. An utterly repulsive way to treat people. I know lots of people in England are cool with that sort of thing, so I wouldn't expect you to agree 🤷🏻‍♀️

Stomacharmeleon · 08/11/2023 19:48

@OuiOuiKitty or....
'Under siege' it's at war. A war it's participating in. Hamas are fighting and firing rockets still.
'Committing apartheid' I disagree with that when it has two million plus Arabs living in Israel with equal rights.
'Under occupation' when did Israel leave? Leaving an infrastructure and a Palestinian government in power?
'Deliberating keeping them in poverty' they have billions in aid their own government withholds from them.
'Restricting their water' Israel left infrastructure and Hamas destroyed it. That's on Hamas. Why not ask Egypt to chip in then? Why on Israel?
'Infrastructure to build' Hamas can being racehorses in through the tunnels and rockets but no building equipment?

This is on Hamas. Israel are responding to a terrorist attack. Why has no other Middle Eastern country offered to help? Because of Hamas.

EsmaCannonball · 08/11/2023 19:58

I think we can be 100% certain that the majority of the people marching - not all, I agree, but the majority - would not be calling for a ceasefire if the Palestinians were winning the war, no matter how many Israelis were being killed or how cruelly they were being killed.
