Conflict in the Middle East

What are the people "Marching" in London every Saturday realistically hoping to achieve?

Flapjacker48 · 05/11/2023 09:34

It won't change UK government policy. It won't result in a ceasefire in Gaza. It won't magically resolve the situation in Palestine.

Same as all the other big marches - War in Iraq etc. Changed nothing.

I take your point @Coughingdodger

The criminality of Netanyahu’s government should not be conflated with Jewishness; but should be condemned.

Jupitersstorm · 06/11/2023 14:18

This is a remarkably erudite, clearly thought out response to what you think and why. Thank you.

a sarky sounding response for sure.

What exactly is your straight non sarky response to the statement:
>>For starters, Israel’s illegal settlements are contested not just by Palestinians but by international law.

Coughingdodger · 06/11/2023 21:43

Sorry my response was not up to scratch.
I thought I was on a chat forum, not making a speech at the UN.
Despite my lamentable brevity however, what I said is true.

@coughingdodger
Israel’s very presence was always a problem for its neighbours, especially as many of them were kicked out of their homes to make way, but that could have been softened over time. However Israel, far from being the humble and grateful newcomer, willing to accept that its arrival has caused problems, has done nothing to endear itself.

I can't believe I'm reading this. Jews have lived in the Holy Land before Islam existed. Do you know any history? Israel is not a 'newcomer'. All the states in the region were newly created in the aftermath of complex colonial histories. There's a reason why rockets are permanently directed at the only Jewish state and its nothing to do with them not being fucking humble enough.

How is this blatant antisemitism allowed on here?

You’re accusing someone of not knowing the history of the region whilst simultaneously pretending that Palestinians aren’t/weren’t real, and that Israel wasn’t established in 75 years ago…

I suppose the fact that only 10% of those living in Palestine in 1922 were Jewish, even after a considerable Jewish immigration in the preceding years, is of no interest to you. The other 90% of inhabitants of Palestine were Muslim and Christian.

Palestinians have existed in Palestine for millennia. They have strong genetic links to the Canaanites.

If you’re wanting to go back to the times of Judea and the Israelites, then you’re also ignoring the fact that there would have been Jewish Palestinians who converted to Christianity and/or Islam over time, because of the empires that have been present in the region.

Meaning that yes, most of modern-day Muslim Palestinians were actually likely Jewish historically! The same applies to Christian Palestinians.

Palestinians are actually not Arabs ethnically, they only identify as such due to language, religion and culture. The same is true of modern day Egyptians, who are also not ethnically Arab, but identify as such due to language, religion and culture.

For lack of a more accessible website on the subject, you can read about Palestinians on Wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestinians#DNA_and_genetic_studies

I’d raise it with HQ there was no reason for deleting your last comment @Coughingdodger apart from people reporting our comments so that our voice is not heard , and @mnhq shouldn’t take part on that if the comments are respectful like yours were

You've mixed me up with someone else. Nothing you say has anything to do with my post. Where did I say Israel wasnt established 75 years ago or that Palestinians aren't real. That would deranged.

Coughingdodger · 06/11/2023 22:13

Gazans aside, I just don’t understand why the Israeli government is putting its own citizens at such enormous risk.

I’m watching Sky News right now and there are huge crowds of angry Muslims gathering and saying they’ll fight for Hezbollah unless there’s a ceasefire. How could the Israeli government not see that this would happen? Will there be an exponentially increasing tit for tat until hundreds of thousands end up dead? Who is going to step in effectively and say STOP?

LittleGlowingOblong · 06/11/2023 22:15

I’ve found this an interesting and thought provoking debate, which has managed to remain relatively calm, but I’m going to withdraw now because I think I’ve reached a point where my view is quite settled, and I find the whole subject emotive and upsetting. There is a time for making certain arguments, however valid they may be, and I think now is a time only for demanding a ceasefire, and an end to the dozens and dozens of bombs raining down on hungry, thirsty people.

Jews demanding a ceasefire have especial moral authority and leverage at this time, because the rest of us are only witnesses living out our mostly comfortable lives, and I humbly thank all Jewish people who have the compassion and magnanimity to speak out against retaliation. I’m not sure I could do it.
I think the world has changed for ever this autumn, and the longer this continues the worse the global reverberations will be.
Peace.

Really interested to learn who the "us " are in your comment " so that our voice is not heard?

Stomacharmeleon · 06/11/2023 22:37

@Coughingdodger I honestly don't think that's true sorry. 'Angry Muslims' where? Iran? They were angry before 7/10. The Ayatollah was pretty non-committal and they aren't going to fart without his say so Lebanon? They fire rockets quite frequently but lots of countries in that area have their own troubles to deal with.

So who? Who do you think will get involved? Apart from 'angry Muslims'

Those reporting comments that don’t go against mn rules.
us those talking but in an adult way. I might not agree with you but as long as you’re respectful I won’t report your comment , that’s freedom of speech. However , the comments cough has had deleted were respectful and they’ve been reported in order to keep her voice quiet.

today I’ve reported 3 accounts brand new ones that have been created to directly attack some of the pro Palestinian mners. The 3 of them have been kicked out.

I have not personally followed the thread closely enough to be able to pinpoint the posters / posts in question, but:

Personal policy: I generally try to NOT report posts and respond, calling them out instead. That would be because - among all the other stuff that is going horribly wrong at present - we are seeing a truly worrying crack-down on the freedom of expression (for context: due to my job, I have a lot of dealings with Germany, and those people seriously scare me at this point due to their ability to mimick Orwell). I absolutely WILL report anything that is just a direct and blatant attack on any particular group of people!

Yes, there is a gray zone. Arbiter: me, myself and I, I am afraid - trying hard to lean on the side of "no reporting, so long as it is not OUTRIGHT directly discriminatory (typically: anti-semitic/anti-palestinian).

We might need a dedicated thread for this - but I am too tired right now to deal with one!

It’s nothing to do with what I think. It’s what Sky News is reporting.

How do you know?

noblegiraffe · 06/11/2023 23:00

Because I've been on here a long time? I've reported comments that haven't been deleted after being looked into, I've had people report things I've said that haven't been deleted. It's not how MN works.

What are the people "Marching" in London every Saturday realistically hoping to achieve?

I presume to be able to fit into their favourite outfit by the holiday season and to have improved their general health

(Not seeing anything else much achieved than that. Now if you ask what they won't achieve or what damage they will do, I could write you a list)
