Conflict in the Middle East

What are the people "Marching" in London every Saturday realistically hoping to achieve?

It won't change UK government policy. It won't result in a ceasefire in Gaza. It won't magically resolve the situation in Palestine.

Same as all the other big marches - War in Iraq etc. Changed nothing.

The Met Police, sorry

@Iwantcakeeveryday

nothing. They need to do nothing.

These marches are not about you.
They are not support for Hamas
They are not hate marches
They are ordinary people horrified by the murder of innocents in Gaza.

Everyone (certainly on this Board) and worldwide media/politicians/celebs/ human beings have already condemned Hamas.

It's time for people to condemn Israel & their murderous collective punishment of civilians who are over 50% kids.

It's that simple

They are support for Hamas
They are hate marches
They are not all ordinary people horrified by the murder of innocents in Gaza.

Anyone who pretends not to understand why the arrival of a new state in the ME, funded by the US and filled with newcomers that displace existing occupants by force would cause offence is being deliberately obtuse.

Anyone who thinks that Israel was “defending itself” by taking more and more land against international law is being goady.

And anyone who thinks that murdering and maiming thousands of children and making over a million people homeless in the space of 3 weeks is ok is an utter psychopath.

100% this

I was making the point that some of the people marching have additional aims that are antisemitic. The Met Office Twitter page contains plenty of examples.

Really?

The fact you used Suella Braverman to support that nonsense actually made me laugh.

@coughingdodger
Israel’s very presence was always a problem for its neighbours, especially as many of them were kicked out of their homes to make way, but that could have been softened over time. However Israel, far from being the humble and grateful newcomer, willing to accept that its arrival has caused problems, has done nothing to endear itself.

I can't believe I'm reading this. Jews have lived in the Holy Land before Islam existed. Do you know any history? Israel is not a 'newcomer'. All the states in the region were newly created in the aftermath of complex colonial histories. There's a reason why rockets are permanently directed at the only Jewish state and its nothing to do with them not being fucking humble enough.

How is this blatant antisemitism allowed on here?

Ok, just pretend you didn’t read through my posts on this (all close together).

You know perfectly well what I mean.

Just like you know perfectly well that what Israel is now doing in Gaza is disgusting and will achieve nothing. Except to claim many, many more lives in one go than anything from either side that has gone before.

So that's millions and millions of obtuse, pyschopathic and goady people.

Fortuntately, they are supporting the correct cause. We must not let regimes carry out terrorist attacks on people enjoying festivals - and allow them to ever do it again.

Glad I made you laugh. Laughter is a healthy thing.

I'm with Ms Braverman on this one - she's the Home Secretary - and an excellent one at that and she has my full support. I admire her for calling the marches what they really are. Lady's got guts.

Apologies for the long quote, but it's relevant. Written in 1891 by a Russian Zionist who foresaw the problems if the arab population weren't treated well by the incomers. He was largely ignored.

“We must surely learn, from both our past and present history, how careful we must be not to provoke the anger of the native people by doing them wrong, how we should be cautious in our dealings with a foreign people among whom we returned to live, to handle these people with love and respect and, needless to say, with justice and good judgment. And what do our brothers do? Exactly the opposite! They were slaves in their Diasporas, and suddenly they find themselves with unlimited freedom, wild freedom that only a country like Turkey [the Ottoman Empire] can offer. This sudden change has planted despotic tendencies in their hearts, as always happens to former slaves [‘eved ki yimlokh — when a slave becomes king — Proverbs 30:22]. They deal with the Arabs with hostility and cruelty, trespass unjustly, beat them shamefully for no sufficient reason, and even boast about their actions. There is no one to stop the flood and put an end to this despicable and dangerous tendency.”

“We who live abroad are accustomed to believing that the Arabs are all wild desert people who, like donkeys, neither see nor understand what is happening around them. But this is a grave mistake….The Arabs, especially the urban elite, see and understand what we are doing and what we wish to do on the land, but they keep quiet and pretend not to notice anything. For now, they do not consider our actions as presenting a future danger to them. … But, if the time comes that our people’s life in Eretz Yisrael will develop to a point where we are taking their place, either slightly or significantly, the natives are not going to just step aside so easily.”- Ahad Ha’am, Russian Jewish Zionist, 1891

And this sums up how the problems came about.

I think the poster meant she has a long history of having some very controversial stances. Like sending immigrants to Rwanda or like her recent one where she called the homeless living in tents as a lifestyle choice

I don’t know any decent people who support Ms Braverman’s polices. Plenty of people do like her of course. She appeals to a certain demographic.

If that's what you need to tell yourself.
I wouldn't say she has guts, just a serious lack of morals and braincells.

Truly wonderful. I find Suella Bravarman rather inflammatory in her speech. Far too reminiscent of the 1930's.

What's needed now is more of the attitudes that led to the 1949 armistices.
Israel started on a poor footing because we had someone more like BoJo and less like Chris Patten overseeing it. Pass the Médoc is probably not the answer.

Diplomacy is the only way out of the current situation. It can be done, if one wants to.

I actually think that these marches are reminiscent of the 1930's in Germany.
SB speaking out about them, in my opinion, shows us that she feels there are chilling echoes. And I agree with her - it's just my opinion. And I'm entitled to it.

Suella Braverman, hater of the homeless, promoter of racist rhetoric, "send them to Rwanda", a shining beacon of reasonability that we should definitely listen to.

Unfortunately there are still a few out there who agree with her hateful and often racist logic. Not many, but they do walk amongst us!
She doesn't do anything to cover up how extreme she is in her views, the woman is a terrifying liability.

It was defined in its declaration of independence as a "Jewish state", a term that also appeared in the United Nations Partition Plan for British Palestine in 1947.

What evidence do you have to say "they’re just trying to make Jewish people look bad."
