It won't change UK government policy. It won't result in a ceasefire in Gaza. It won't magically resolve the situation in Palestine.

Same as all the other big marches - War in Iraq etc. Changed nothing.

Antisemitism is a very real issue. Putting words in poster's mouths and deliberate misinterpretations very much undermine what is a serious issue.

Yes, too much of this on here.

LittleGlowingOblong · 05/11/2023 20:27

@cathyj77 I apologise, that was thoughtless of me. I’m sorry you are experiencing such terror.

Reallifelurker · 05/11/2023 20:31

why don’t you accept that there is extremisms on both sides and that both sides are as bad.?

Yep. Some Israelis are probably cheering the destruction of Gaza on. Not all obviously but I doubt all the Palestinians cheer at Hamas. They’re probably equally fed up of both Hamas and Israel by now.

Stomacharmeleon · 05/11/2023 20:39

@EasterIssland is that a firm no then from both of you. Or do you want me to give you five minutes to make one?

Pumpkinatmidnight · 05/11/2023 20:40

Not 'Judaism's but Zionism, which is a militant ideology rather than the original Abrahamic faith that profoundly influenced both Christianity and Islam.

The truth is there is a lot of confusion that is sometimes being utilised to label and misdirect. That for example Palestinians are hamas, or even elected hamas when more than half of today's population were not even born when hamas was elected. Or that Palestinians are all Muslims when there christians too, but they are all arab. Similarly with hamas and ISIS (both terrorists but one to liberate indigenous people the other to annihilate all non-muslims), and Zionism and Judaism (one a religion and the other a political movement) etc the complexities are being missed.

Stomacharmeleon · 05/11/2023 20:42

@OuiOuiKitty they weren't out for the day sight seeing though we're they?
It's what they did after I am most devastated about.
It takes a special kind of person to minimise terror.

Pumpkinatmidnight · 05/11/2023 20:50

Palestinians in their concentration camp because calling Gaza an open air prison assumes rights that these people are not allowed don't have a choice to reject hamas because 1) they have no other choice but to 2) appease a 'liberation'\ terror group.

and there has been a disgusting trend amongst Israelis on social media to blacken their teeth, wear keffiyas\ or hijab, cover themselves in what looks like dust to make fun of Palestinians (look it up) including the latest, making fun of Palestinian hostages being tortured. Children and toddlers are encouraged to do this. This isn't a terrorist group parading their victims but civilians cruelly making fun of their fellow country folk, people they are being accused of oppressing in an apartheid state. This is modern day propaganda to dehumanize people to make them seem like vermin only worthy of extermination.

Reallifelurker · 05/11/2023 20:53

Well I’ve seen posts from people saying that Israel is doing well because it hasn’t obliterated Gaza in a day, going on about how they benevolently supplied Gaza with free water or trying to claim the blockade does not actually exits. What is all of that if not minimising?

Teentaxidriver · 05/11/2023 21:03

OneHurt - have you been living under a rock? Maybe inform yourself better before you come on a forum like this and vogue opinion after opinion after opinion.

Equally islamaphobia including a 6 year old Palestinian child stabbed to death, and his mother stabbed too, by a neighbour they used to visit with (they were friends with!!) because he believed the news that Palestinians are terrrorists. Do you imagine this news item would have been left by the wayside if said family was jewish? A man was attacked leaving a mosque local to me last Friday, and several women wearing the headscarf were hit by bricks... What's more dangerous is the number of pro-Palestinians being banned\ or intimidated from clearinghouse truth or Muslim and\ or Arabs muting themself for fear of being fired, as we are seeing across the globe... Where is the rage? Where is the police protection? My cousin's little girl is more scared of the police cars outside her school (a Jewish school) than anything else. There is a long history of anti-Semitism in this country, and the constant fear mongering is, yes, 'unhelpful' to say the least.

Pumpkinatmidnight · 05/11/2023 21:09

These have been my first posts and the first time I type on my child's tablet lol so apologies for the many, many typos and satisfactions autocorrections.

Then perhaps you are special too because minimising terror is exactly what you tried to do when you called my post 'over emotional crap'. Do you not think Palestinian mothers are terrified when their sons get dragged away by the IDF, when they are tortured and held for as long as Israel like. I'm devastated too, devastated about the killing and injuring of 10s of 1000s of people, that people are condoning it and accusing anyone that cares of being antisemitic, brain dead or overly emotional.

Ibizafun · 05/11/2023 21:21

Obviously to keep the plight of the babies, children and elderly who are being held in Hamas's dungeons in the public eye.

UpperLowerMiddleClass · 05/11/2023 21:40

It seems that for some people Jews are fine in theory - feeling sorry for dead stateless Jews killed in the holocaust, “never again” “6 million dead” etc.

But real live Jews in their own country, with their own army - that seems to make some people very uneasy. I’m no military strategist but I imagine the first rule of building an army is to think about the credible threats facing your country and create an army that can deal with that level and type of threat. Hence the IDF is what it is.

And while I’m no supporter of Netanyahu, surely it’s understandable while some Israelis vote for a hardline right winger who vows to be tough on terrorists.

As for the marchers today the phrase ‘useful idiots’ is the one that came into my head…

StarbucksSmarterSister · 05/11/2023 21:49

OneHurtSpaggettio · 05/11/2023 20:20

@cathyj77 @EsmaCannonball No, I haven’t seen it, hence asking for a solid source/link…

I know that the IDF have body cam footage of Hamas killing innocent civilians, but I’ve neither seen nor heard of what Esma just described.

Where have you been for the last 4 weeks?

It's all over social media and I've even seen a blurred version on tv.

Type "shani louk video" into Twitter, if you stomach it.

What does it mean?

Parkingt111 · 05/11/2023 22:04

People are marching because our government is complicit in the deaths of thousands of civilians
And whilst we debate on how bad these marches are Gaza is facing the worst night of bombing since the war started
And all communications are cut off so nobody can even call for help
If you can still carry on justifying it then that's on you

What are the people "Marching" in London every Saturday realistically hoping to achieve?
Parkingt111 · 05/11/2023 22:05

And no this picture and words are not Hamas propaganda before I get attacked for that
It's the BBC

What are the people "Marching" in London every Saturday realistically hoping to achieve?
Parkingt111 · 05/11/2023 22:09

The world looks on casually that Israel is
currently heavily bombing a refugee camp too
And then everyone will pile on 'it's their own fault why didn't they move to the south!
So maybe they should move to the refugee camps in the south which are also being bombed...
And then they will say its their own fault for electing Hamas
And the children will say well we weren't even born then and many of us didn't have a choice
And then they will say well its your own fault for being Palestinian and born in Gaza

An example of othering.

HiggleDyPigGeldy · 05/11/2023 22:12

Marching is one of the few ways you can have a voice.
You can try giving to charities that work in Gaza but at the moment they don’t have access to help the civilians being targeted.
You can try to write your local MP but it’s a minefield to do that and so many people speaking out are currently having their words twisted, their employers coming under pressure to fire them, etc etc (head of the UN case in point).
If anyone on here has other suggestions on how ordinary people can have a positive impact in trying to stop the killing I’m curious to hear them.

Reallifelurker · 05/11/2023 22:12

“A useful idiot is a person perceived as propagandizing for a cause—particularly a bad cause originating from a devious, ruthless source—without fully comprehending the cause's goals, and who is cynically being used by the cause's leaders” (Wikepedia)

Not sure about this tbh. Even if the marchers are misguided in any way who is exploiting them?
