Conflict in the Middle East

What are the people "Marching" in London every Saturday realistically hoping to achieve?

It won't change UK government policy. It won't result in a ceasefire in Gaza. It won't magically resolve the situation in Palestine.

Same as all the other big marches - War in Iraq etc. Changed nothing.

Well if we are going to talk about hostages it’s only fair we mention the small problem of between 8-10 thousand palestian hostages held without charge in Israel including children. Many brutally attacked and injured. A hostage swap was one of the reasons for the awful attack on 07 Oct, but no, Netanyahu won’t negotiate on them.

This is what i don't understand. Why do people suddenly care about hostages? For years Israel have been taking hostages and nobody has seemed to care but when it's the other way round people are baying for blood and cheering on the killing of children in the name of protection? Where were these people when Israel were stealing children from their parents and torturing them? Why weren't they baying for the blood of the Israelis? Suggesting that we starve Israelis until they give Palestinian children back? Suggesting that we flatten Israel until their cruel regime ends? Why do people on one side of the Israeli built wall matter and not the people on the other?

@OuiOuiKitty who on this thread is ‘baying for blood’ and ‘cheering on the killing of children.’ I haven’t seen anyone do this.

Most people in this thread are engaging in good faith, trying to explain why a lot of Jewish people find the marches frightening.

While we’re at it, accusing Jewish people of ‘baying for blood’ and being child killers isn’t a great look either. But of course, you weren’t talking about Jews were you, etc etc etc

cathyj77 · 05/11/2023 20:05

@LittleGlowingOblong I’m so sorry if you find the invocation of anti-semitism ‘unhelpful’. The people experiencing actual anti-semitism in the last few weeks probably find it a bit worse than unhelpful - like, try ‘terrifying’.

This... just this.

Israeli corpses were driven through Gaza in the back of trucks and strapped across the back of motorbikes by the people who had just executed them and, instead of being viewed with sorrow or solemnity, the crowds celebrated and jeered and spat on them. They were the ones literally baying for blood.

I agree completely @Itisyourturntowashthebath FWIW.

But to return to where this thread started, I think these marches are doing the exact opposite of expressing that sentiment. They are (at least in their placards and chants) expressing the view that they want the Palestinians to 'win' even at the cost of the destruction of Israel. That is why Jewish people find them so frightening.

The only way to peace is through a two-state solution so it would be nice to hear some of the marchers calling for that.

The problem is a two stage solution won’t work whilst the settlers are taking over the West Bank, that’s not a fight against Hamas is it ? Israel want to take over all the West Bank and Gaza, and unfortunately Hamas have played into their hands….that’s ethnic cleansing. The violence from the Israeli settlers there is horrific ? Israel seem to be able to do what they want.

If you’re going to say something like that then you better have a concrete source and link to back it up.

I really liked thus. As a youth I did some humanitarian work in Iraq and was apprehensive of how people there would view GB post-2003, but the overwhelming response I had was: we saw your people out on the street; we know it 'a government's not people who want war. These were people, civilians , directly impacted by the occupation\ 'liberation' of Iraq.

I've been out every Saturday with friends and my children, not because I imagine it will impact government policy, but to help bear this dreadful feeling of helplessness and injustice. Many Jewish friends come as I've joined some of Not In My Name protests. These are glimmers of humanity in an otherwise dark world.

soddingspiderseason · 05/11/2023 20:13

These threads inevitably descend into antisemitic propaganda and made up stories to justify wanting to wipe Israel and every Jewish person off the face of the earth. The problem is that the reality of Hamas and its supporters has been seen by the whole world now.

cathyj77 · 05/11/2023 20:13

Really @OneHurtSpaggettio - Hamas
filmed their atrocities themselves. Have you seen the footage or do you believe that’s some kind of IDF fakery?

Erm, have you seen the videos that Hamas filmed themselves? They've been out there for a month now. Dead bodies strapped across motorbikes and people are delighted. Murdered women spat on. People on the streets of Gaza celebrating their returning heroes.

Stomacharmeleon · 05/11/2023 20:13

@OuiOuiKitty can you draw my attention to the thread you started about the other 'hostages' in Israel? There must have been lots by now? Especially if Israel have been 'stealing children' . That would be huge by mumnet's standards.

A lot of what you say is over emotional frankly crap. You know the answers to the questions.....
Israel couldn't be starved could they as they supply the food and water. Although the Gazan's own government Refuse too. They rely on aid that's then taken. Because the government invests in its people. Same as supplying bomb shelters.

They DID attempt to come and get them and flatten them.... or do you not remember that bit.

And they have a great big wall and an iron dome because their next door neighbours want to murder them. You know all of them. Not just the ones that live there. The (Jews) that is....

Stomacharmeleon · 05/11/2023 20:15

@OneHurtSpaggettio shani Louk? Or have you forgotten about that already?

I wasn't accusing 'Jewish people' of anything. I was talking about every single person that shrugs their shoulders and says but what else are they supposed to do?

News from 2015. To me they are both as sickening as each other.

why don’t you accept that there is extremisms on both sides and that both sides are as bad.?

I have been protesting for years and years about Israels cruel regime.

You want to talk about over emotional when you are talking about men that landed in on paragliders 'attempting to flatten Israel'? What were they going to do that with, their feet? In case you haven't noticed Israel have US backed warplanes that are actually flattening Gaza with their tons and tons of bombs.

. It is estimated that there are between 500 and 1000 children held in Israeli military detention each year.
Save the Children says these practices are a major and long-standing human rights concern and is calling for the UK Government to support an immediate moratorium on Israeli military authoritues arresting, detaining and prosecuting children.
Khalil*, who was detained when he was 13, said that he did not receive essential healthcare:
“I had an injury in my leg, I had a cast, and had to crawl to be able to move. I felt my body being torn apart. I had no canes to help me walk, I kept asking soldiers for help during the transfer, but no one helped me.”

Khalil* continued: “The soldier threatened to kill me when he arrested me for the second time. He asked me, ‘Do you want the same fate as your cousin?’ as he had been killed. He promised me that I would have the same fate and die, but that he would send me to prison first. He told me that he’s coming back for me – and every day, I wait for that day to come.”
Some children reported that they believed different types of abuse were intended to push them to admit things that were untrue in order to incriminate others, including family members.

@cathyj77 @EsmaCannonball No, I haven’t seen it, hence asking for a solid source/link…

I know that the IDF have body cam footage of Hamas killing innocent civilians, but I’ve neither seen nor heard of what Esma just described.

Could you explain what you mean by "The horror is now because of the government’s Judaism, is it not even despite it?"

What do you believe has been made up?

Pumpkinatmidnight · 05/11/2023 20:24

Please don't conflate anti-Israel\ a Zionist state with anti-jewish, as popular as that seems, it's incredibly dangerous. I have Jewish friends who have against the false narratives they were fed as young people; that Palestine didn't exist and the land was empty before Jewish people were imported in etc. They are angry at the lies, and some protest to say Not in My Name.

ChickHenLittle · 05/11/2023 20:24

Antisemitism is a very real issue. Putting words in poster's mouths and deliberate misinterpretations very much undermine what is a serious issue.
