The number of children reported killed in just three weeks in Gaza is more than the number killed in armed conflict globally – across more than 20 countries – over the course of a whole year, for the last three years.

Statement on children's deaths in Gaza | Save the Children

Children killed in Gaza in three weeks surpasses annual number of children killed across the world's conflict zones since 2019.

I don't get why Hamas using civilians as shields is used to justify the high number of civilian victims.
Surely the whole point of using an innocent human shield is that it should work. If a terrorist is holding a child, no decent person would shoot at them, right?

jojonono · 30/10/2023 14:07

@bonkersAlice Hamas grew out of a situation whereby Israel state forcibly overtook Palestinian land, gradually stole their land, terrorised citizens, imprisoned their children and more let alone imprisoned 2m for 15+ years. I do not condone Hamas, but maybe the Israeli govt shouldn't have helped to create or fund them? Maybe they didn't grow out of a vacuum as the UN guy pointedly noted.

Failing to acknowledge the situation that Hamas grew out of (assisted by Netenyahu) is putting your fingers in your ears to the terrible behaviour of the Israli govt of the last 75 years. But I guess it is convenient to ignore that isn't it?

CAVEAT for pro-IDF Bots: I do not condone Hamas.

Edited

This. 100% agree.
Terrorist organizations form when there is an absence of a steady government.
The Israeli government is slaughtering civilians incl children under a blackout while claiming they are the most moral army in the world. I'm beyond disgusted by how posters here have derailed this thread.
Thousands of children have died in Gaza. Before this war, children in Gaza were suffering or killed under Israeli occupation.
I'm tired of how we can't say this because it's anti semitic apparently.

iamnitongoogle · 30/10/2023 17:14

@jojonono Apols the frustration in my post was not directed at you, rather the poster you had quoted. Sorry, I'm just frustrated and can't bear the thought of children dying and the world just watching.

Caffeineandicecream · 30/10/2023 17:24

The Hammas group are sons' of parents who have been raped and murdered, their family homes taken and exhiled to an open air prison with no escape. They are terrorists yes, created from the terror that they and their families endured.
How are the surviving children of this barbaric onslaught going to grow up? The ones that haven't been murdered/blinded/deafened/physically and mentally disabled. The hate is going to continue, more terrorism will be born.
It's so utterly heartbreaking.
How are the lives of Israeli settlers' children so much more cared for than the children who happened to be born in Gaza?
Why isn't Netanyahu sending in special forces to retrieve Hammas rather than killing thousands of children, to no result?

EasterIssland · 30/10/2023 18:02

This is how Israel refers to the deaths (it includes the children and elderlies and journalists and doctors and many other innocent people)

Good lord.

But Sunak will be happy, he told Netanyahu he hopes Israel win.

bness · 30/10/2023 18:14

Horrendous. There are people cheering and happy about this.

Yeah Sunak and Biden have blood on their hands. Especially sad about Biden's stance. He doesn't look like a leader, he looks like a war monger. Disappointing.

"How were the Taliban formed? The group was formed in the early 1990s by Afghan mujahideen, or Islamic guerrilla fighters, who had resisted the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan (1979–89) with the covert backing of the CIA and its Pakistani counterpart, the Inter-Services Intelligence directorate (ISI)."

We build them up, we knock them down. "Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia."

Warsarecruel · 30/10/2023 15:08

What’s ignorant is sitting in your cosy little houses and being blissfully unaware of the complexities of war and what they entail.
If we didn’t destabilise ISIS and Taliban which was a threat to our national security, then we put our civilians at risk, if we choose to destabilise those two powers that means a loss of civilian lives. Every country makes the decision that is best for their own interests, as sad as that all sounds.

This was in reply to this post.

flowofstate · 30/10/2023 19:28

@MrsTerryPratchett exactly. let's not forget that Israelis have explicitly said the state helped to create Hamas:

From the article below:

https://theintercept.com/2018/02/19/hamas-israel-palestine-conflict/

"But did you also know that Hamas — which is an Arabic acronym for “Islamic Resistance Movement” — would probably not exist today were it not for the Jewish state? That the Israelis helped turn a bunch of fringe Palestinian Islamists in the late 1970s into one of the world’s most notorious militant groups? That Hamas is blowback?

This isn’t a conspiracy theory. Listen to former Israeli officials such as Brig. Gen. Yitzhak Segev, who was the Israeli military governor in Gaza in the early 1980s. Segev later told a New York Times reporter that he had helped finance the Palestinian Islamist movement as a “counterweight” to the secularists and leftists of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Fatah party, led by Yasser Arafat (who himself referred to Hamas as “a creature of Israel.”)
“The Israeli government gave me a budget,” the retired brigadier general confessed, “and the military government gives to the mosques.”

“Hamas, to my great regret, is Israel’s creation,” Avner Cohen, a former Israeli religious affairs official who worked in Gaza for more than two decades, told the Wall Street Journal in 2009. Back in the mid-1980s, Cohen even wrote an official report to his superiors warning them not to play divide-and-rule in the Occupied Territories, by backing Palestinian Islamists against Palestinian secularists. “I … suggest focusing our efforts on finding ways to break up this monster before this reality jumps in our face,” he wrote.
They didn’t listen to him. And Hamas, as I explain in the fifth installment of my short film series for The Intercept on blowback, was the result.

To be clear: First, the Israelis helped build up a militant strain of Palestinian political Islam, in the form of Hamas and its Muslim Brotherhood precursors; then, the Israelis switched tack and tried to bomb, besiege, and blockade it out of existence."

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/10/2023 19:34

It's always the way @flowofstate

From Central America to Afghanistan, Angola to SE Asia. Proxy wars everywhere, 'democracies' created oppositions to fight against. My enemy's enemy is my friend until they aren't. Supporting murderous dictators and funding torture and murder.

We are watching children being murdered in real time, not discussing history, and people want us to LOOK OVER THERE. It' repulsive.

flowofstate · 30/10/2023 19:41

completely agree @MrsTerryPratchett . Also let us not forget the arms companies and govts and corrupt individuals who massively financially benefit from the promotion and continuation of war and sale of arms and bombs.

Nobody really wins from war except those guys, oh and corrupt politicians like Netenyahu who are trying to save their political skin. So of course they will push and push and create these ridiculous manufactured divisions, create terrorist organisations like Hamas, Taliban etc so they can continue to make money at the expense of civilians, children and families everywhere. Sickening.

I feel relieved reading some of the commenters posts. Thank you to everyone who has a heart. Honestly I was feeling like I was alone in my thoughts about Palestine but clearly not. I am glad people care about innocent children regardless of their race.

Great posts @MrsTerryPratchett and @flowofstate

I watched a fantastic video that explains even more about the economic reasoning behind this war:

So as well as funding the imperialist war machine, it’s also saving the US’s economy from being left in the dust by China.

Is this the civilian family car that was targeted? Absolutely horrifying how brazen attacks on civilians are becoming. I see that journalists in Lebanon have also been targeted, and although not completely proven, a postmortem shows it was likely IDF bullets, given the type of ammunition and direction from which it was fired.

Do you mean Issam Abdallah the Reuters journalist? With a group of others, clearly marked as Press? Well this is what Israel’s U.N. envoy, Gilad Erdan, said in a briefing on the subject:

"Obviously, we would never want to hit or kill or shoot any journalist that is doing its job. But you know, we're in a state of war, things might happen”

Sounds a lot like ‘shrug, meh, it’s a war - shit happens’.
Who was it on this thread that stated Israel forces are not firing indiscriminately? Sounds from that, that they certainly are and Gilda Erdan is totally cool with that.

@flowofstate Oh no, I’m not sure why it isn’t working, I went back to the reel just now but the link is identical to the one that I already shared.

To find the reel yourself, search on Instagram for richardtmedhurst - it is his second most recent reel.

That's what's killing me. Our government is complicit in the genocide. This time they didn't even try to pretend to to care for the innocent victims.

I was so shocked by his behaviour since the 7th. It's been from bad to worse.

On Sky live now, a baby, a very young baby rushed into a hospital with her leg ripped off, a hospital that has been ordered to evacuate.

Please just make it stop, for the love of God, whatever name you give God just make it stop
