if you are still awaiting the arrival of your period ( or af as some of you insist on calling it) there is NO way of knowing you are up the duff. all so called early pregnancy symtoms are pretty much the same as being premenstral.

crampy draggy feelings - tick
change in mucus - tick
nausea and light headedness - tick
bubbly feelings - you have wind

i could go on. i am not being mean but i would like to share my experiences over the past couple of years.

just wait and see!

i too find symptom spotting a total waste of time and was also under the impression that hcg not high enough to trigger symptoms till after your period would have come?

Everyone has occasional cramping/sore boobs/teariness/itchy buttocks (sorry not sure that's one) but when you're TTC you're just looking out for these things and desperate to interpret them as a sign.

No reason for anyone else to not chat about them on here obviously but I too refuse to allow any such thoughts into my head. At the end of the day its just a waiting game.

Btw I have't been trying long so have not suffered like many people here have but I hate hate hate the whole knicker watching thing at the end of your cycle. Every time you go the loo (wherever you are, Sainburys, work, toddler group) you have to psych yourself up for that inevitable wipe...oh sh*t... moment and be ready to come out with a smile on your face. Pants pants pants. Especially as I have an extraordinarily small bladder made even worse by nerves and excitement and end up going to the loo every half-hour.

herbaceous · 19/03/2008 13:57

Ooh hairy, I hate that too. Particularly fine was on Christmas day this year, round at my sister's perfect family home, with her two kids, and one on the way. I have no kids, and am older, and having deadly time TTCing... MCing... TTCing... etc. I'd really got my hopes up (due to erroneous symptom spotting), but the inevitable 'bad wipe' occurred, and I had to carry on being 'jolly sis/aunty'. Booze helps.

wannaBe · 19/03/2008 13:58

I think that often pregnancy simptoms are psychosomatic. If you want to feel pregnant, then you will, iyswim?

The one time I was pregnant I had no idea. I had a period (or so I thought), I had no simptoms, I had decided that month that we were giving up ttc anyway just having the tests to find out what was wrong and then giving up (had been ttc for just over a year then). so off I went to gp for a day 3 blood test, despite the fact all bleeding had pretty much stopped, and two weeks later I rang for the result and was asked "are you taking the pill?". and that same day I fainted at work and just on the offchance I did a test, with dh saying "this is madness paying another bloody 8 quid for a test that will be negative" and there it was. two lines. no sore boobs, no nausia, no tiredness, nothing. Not for at least another week. so there it was.

And I think all this early testing is just setting oneself up for a fall, or bankrupcy, depending on how long you've been trying .

and I speak as someone who has been ttc for three years now but I have never and will never go down the route of early testing.

HairyToe · 19/03/2008 14:14

God herby that sounds horrendous - I'm sure I'd have seriously wobbled ( and I do have dcs already and have not had nearly the problems you have had so what am I complaining about ).

This cycle dh is away so period will be inevitable, but I have already worked out that the following cycle my period is due at the beginning of May, slap bang in the middle of a week's holiday in Menorca with the in-laws. If I have a 'bad wipe' then I shall think of you and your Christmas experience as I prepare to leave the lav without my lip wobbling pathetically.

By the way wannaBe couldn't agree with you more re early testing. I just had my fingers burnt this last cycle with a chemical pregnancy. Two BFPs, one just before and one on due date. Hurrah! Next day bleeding like a stuck pig. I'm too ashamed to say how much money I spent on tests over the last weekend...

AlbertaWildRose · 19/03/2008 14:44

Ooh, ooh, can I join in too? Long story: I had an mc in January, after conceiving while BF and hadn't yet had a period since DS was born. Which means I hadn't had a period since August 2005! We have been ttc ever since the mc, but because I didn't know when my period would come I don't know when I would be late! I've been going crazy symptom-spotting, done far too many BFN tests, then period came on the weekend. But it was so light I of course thought it must be implantion bleed! No, I have to resign myself to the fact that it's just my body getting back to normal after mc. Whew, that really was long, sorry!

beaniesteve · 19/03/2008 15:03

Just went to see a friend who has two children and she surprised me by saying that in the whole time she was TTC (and it took her over a year to get pregnant the first time) not once did she do a test until her period was at least a day lat! Wish I had that kind of willpower.

She also said she had absolutely no symptoms with both her pregnancies until after she got a positive.

kerala · 19/03/2008 15:12

IME my pregnancy symtoms were IDENTICAL to my pre menstraual ones which I had been tracking as took 9 months to conceive. To the extent I thought - sore boobs day 15 here we go period on its way sod it I'll have some wine. And was preg.

HairyToe · 19/03/2008 15:12

Just realised I've still got sore boobs now and I'm definitely not pregnant. Think I should probably get a bigger bra

belgo · 19/03/2008 15:36

the earlist I've ever tested is period three days late. I can't bear to waste the money by testing early. (I try and wait until it's one week late but that's a bit difficult!)

Heron23 · 20/03/2008 16:39

how about continuous raised body temp? since ov, my body temp has continued to be higher than normal (37degC - 37.4degC)

i completely agree with all your comments about symptom-spotting (no pun intended), it is so hard not to do tho. esp as i've had this pretty much lower back pain and abdominal pain (prob due to AF coming in 8 days time!)

i admire people who can wait till AF is absent before testing, me? i have wasted 4 test strips already and it is only 8dpo for me...

beaniesteve · 20/03/2008 16:41

thing is - you wait until your period is late, then you test and still no flipping positive... so you wait some more, meanwhile your boos are itching etc...

Heron23 · 20/03/2008 17:09

hi beanie, how many days dpo are you now?

Well I knew I was pg because a specific song came on to my mp3 shuffle player thingy when I was walking home with a pg test in my bag, planning to pee on a stick as soon as I got home.

as i recall, no symptoms whatsoever except the absence of slight clumsiness and misery which normally precedes period. i suppose it's possible that i was just in a good mood though...

(also, in terms of disgustingly twee euphemisms, i have to say, the term 'baby dance' makes me exceedingly glad to be gay....)

Flamesparrow · 20/03/2008 18:41

I have felt pregnant for 3 months straight now.

I am NOT.

(I have checked several times now even though coil and very little sex should be enough of a deterrent).

If you're pregnant, you will get a line on the stick.

hi heron

no idea how many days past ovulation I am as I managed to somehow get no positive OPs this month - I had a faint second line at about 17 days so I guess I could be about 7 or 8 days PO?

belgianbun I felt a little weird about my SIL being pregnant but she and my brother are lovely so I am ok now. Loads of women in work are pregnant but it doesn't bother me as much as close friends and family.

Heron23 · 20/03/2008 20:03

hi beanie, must be hard, for me, my SIL is actively ttc. i am sure she knows i am ttc as well. we both have 1 child each. not that it is an open race but it kinda feels like we are racing to see who will get pg first!

silly right?

right now, the house is so peaceful, DS is asleep, DH just got home from work and is having a predinner nap...

me? thinking about my next hpt !

Blocky · 23/03/2008 23:02

Had been ttc, felt pre-menstrual but wishful thinking, got a test and did it on the day period was due. BFN.
Left it a week - no period so bought one on way home from work. Convinced it'd be negative and I wasted a tenner that could've been spent on booze that evening, sat on the loo at 6pm just before leaving home to go to a work do. BFP.

Thats when my symptoms started - the nausea, the starving hungriness, the wanting to pee every 5 minutes, the weeping and wailing at anyone and everyone. I am now convinced that some symptoms are psychosomatic.

A friend of mine didn't find out she was pregnant until 22 weeks. She said she felt 'odd' but was more concerned about her weight gain or that she was becoming menopausal. She had no nausea, no metallic taste, and wasn't aware of the baby moving - whereas I had the whole spectrum.

beaniesteve · 24/03/2008 11:38

Oh dearie - see this ^^ is what I want to hear.

5 days overdue on a 24 day cycle. Never ever late. Tests all coming back negative. No symptoms whatsoever, (though last night I had pains in my groin) all I can think is I must be pregnant but not enough hormones to test or something. That's what I would truly lilke it to be.

Heron23 · 24/03/2008 12:29

hi beanie, as long as AF is not here, it is good! are your AFs normally regular? sorry if you have posted this info already!

for me, AF is due on wed night/thurs morning. my AF is regular. tested this morning DPO12 with ultrasensitive test strip (from babymad) and it was BFN.

i still got all the symptoms - sore boobs, some cramps tummy and legs, raised temp. i feel like going out to buy the digital test clearblue. driving me nuts, off to do my ironing now

Heron23 · 24/03/2008 12:30

been spending far too much time reading all symptoms on www.twoweekwait.com

DH thinks i am a bit obsessed

beaniesteve · 24/03/2008 12:36

Heron - I have posted it everywhere I am THAT obsessed.

Period always on the dot.
My boyfriend also thinks I am obsessed.
