Letrozole first cycle

Hi ladies,

I’m due to start taking letrozole next cycle for the first time, just waiting for my period to start. I’ve got some spotting so reckon it will be in the next couple of days.

I wanted to see if anyone else is at a similar stage and wants to join me on the journey? Or if you’re already taking it I’d love to hear your experiences!

I’ve been reading all about the side effects so I’m a little anxious, but generally just excited to give it a try! My cycles are very irregular, and although I always get a peak OPK recently this hasn’t happened until around CD32, so I have a lot of waiting to do! Really hope the letrozole speeds things up 🤞

@ChipAndDip I just re-read my message about my follicle, and obviously meant 14MM not 14CM LOL (imagine)

ChipAndDip · 17/07/2023 20:36

Haha 14cm eek! I think you’d know about that 😅 Great news about your OPK! What cycle day are you now?

I’m 5dpo and just had some light brown spotting which is very frustrating. Definitely too early for implantation (I mean I could be 6dpo at a push) but still. I do usually spot early every cycle, so at least I’ll have a progesterone test finally to see if that’s the issue. It will be good to know before next cycle anyway. Ah the fun continues!

@ChipAndDip I'm on CD17, how are you today? Spotting happening still? I'm taking this round as a 'experiment' so that I don't get my hopes up, as it rarely happens on the first cycle x

ChipAndDip · 19/07/2023 13:09

@Obione1 still spotting! But had my progesterone blood test today so that will tell me more. I like the way you’re viewing this cycle as an experiment - I’m going to take that mindset as well! I have a follow up with the clinic on Friday to talk options 🤞

Hi @Obione1 how are you getting on with your TWW?

My progesterone levels came back all fine so the 5mg has definitely worked for me 🙌🏻 So that means my spotting is caused by something else. I’m going to keep going with letrozole for a couple more months and in the meantime I’m on the waiting list for a laparoscopy to see if we can find out what causes the spotting once and for all! So I’m quite happy about that. It seems that being monitored for ovulation induction has really helped to push other tests along, so even if I don’t get pregnant straight away, that is a huge bonus!

Obione1 · 24/07/2023 14:08

Oh that's good news for your progesterone, have you had all the other tests done like the hycsos etc? I've had all of those done & they said I look great, no issues, so think it's just a brain/womb connection
Has your AF arrived? Great news that you responded to the Letrazole, I've been reading & apparently it gets better results than clomid, so good we're on this one.

This TWW is horrible isn't it!? I woke up last night about 3am violently sick & so rough today, so that's a fun stomach bug to add to this window.
My Flo app says to test in 8 days unless my AF begins in 3. It's a slow & horrible countdown lol

Lovemusic2015 · 24/07/2023 14:12

Hi ladies, interested to come across this thread so I’ll be following along. I’m starting letrozole next cycle after ttc for 18 months or so. Have mild pcos & whilst I’m getting peaks on ov sticks not sure if I’m ovulating every month. Scans & bloods tests be very reassuring to know it’s actually happening. 🤞🏻this works for you ladies!

ChipAndDip · 24/07/2023 22:19

@Obione1 oh no sorry to hear you’ve been unwell! That sounds horrible 😞 I hope you recover soon. You’re about halfway through the wait then, not too much longer!

No I haven’t had a hycosy yet, but they’ll do it if I’m not pregnant after 3 goes of letrozole. And then I’ll have the hysteroscopy and laparoscopy as soon as I get to the top of the wait list (which could be a while!) Have you had any of those tests?

I haven’t got my period yet, although the spotting has continued on and off and I had quite bad cramps yesterday so I’m expecting it any moment now…

Welcome @Lovemusic2015! Good luck with the letrozole, let us know how you get on! My side effects weren’t too bad so hopefully it’s the same for you 🤞

@ChipAndDip
Feeling a bit better, but stomach bugs are horrid- so nauseous when I eat😦
Yeah I had allllll the tests done, my specialist wouldn't start the Provera & letrozole without it all.
Weirdly though, I only had one scan, no follow-up to see if it had ruptured or my progesterone levels etc. It's odd how the treatment varies so much depending on where you are.
Did your AF arrive?
hey @Lovemusic2015 good luck with the first cycle - when are you taking your first tab? Side effects-wise, I was SO dizzy, every day. It was horrid, but I suppose working from home has it's perks as I could just go lie down! They're not common though, so I'm sure you'll be fine!

Lovemusic2015 · 30/07/2023 16:02

Hi ladies, checking in to see how you’re all doing? I’m 6dpo so if unsuccessful will be starting letrozole. usually have a 12 day luteal phase. I’m already on metformin and that makes me nauseous if no proper meal etc so I’m sure two drugs combined will be fun!! I’m doing a full monitored cycle next month with the letrozole, trigger shot & progesterone pessaries.

ChipAndDip · 31/07/2023 21:25

Hi ladies, sorry I missed some notifications!

My period arrived after 9(!) days of spotting and I’m now on CD6 so just took my last letrozole tablets. I’ve had absolutely no side effects this cycle which is nice.

How are you getting on @Obione1 Will you be testing soon if AF hasn’t arrived yet? 🤞

@Lovemusic2015 oh wow you’re getting the full suite! Hopefully you won’t need it, but if you do I’ve heard that metformin side effects are much worse than letrozole so on the plus side you might not even notice any difference. What day do you usually ovulate? I also always get a peak, but not until way too late (sometimes as late as day 30 something) but last month it was CD16 so much much better with letrozole!

@ChipAndDip She arrived...:( Started round two of Letrazole last night... here we go again! Weird though isn't it, i've been spotting since 27th July (Happy Birthday to me) and it feels like it's not started properly, but all the tests say negative and so it's not implantation, Eugh.

Never mind :)

ChipAndDip · 31/07/2023 21:58

Sorry to hear that @Obione1 :( Oh what a rubbish birthday present. Yes mine took forever to properly get going, but when it finally arrived I only had 3 days of proper bleeding.

Well here’s to round 2, we got this!

OP posts:
Obione1 · 31/07/2023 22:07

@ChipAndDip yes we do! Let me know how you get on, I'm in New York this week for work & dreading taking more tablets because my last round, i was so dizzy I was so useless and could barely walk around. Fingers crossed that doesn't hit me this week.

When is your next scan?

ChipAndDip · 31/07/2023 23:06

@Obione1 ah such bad timing. I hope your side effects aren’t so bad this time. Mine totally disappeared so hopefully yours will as well!

I’m not having any more scans, my clinic only did it to check the first round worked, so now I’m left alone for the next 2 rounds. I’m just going to track with OPKs.

How many rounds of letrozole have you been given?

OP posts:
ellierose66 · 01/08/2023 16:02

Just adding into this post so I don’t lose it!

first private appointment on Thursday so hoping I can get some letrozole and get started!

anyone had an AMH blood test and AFC scan before? Xx

Lovemusic2015 · 01/08/2023 19:14

@ChipAndDip & @Obione1 sorry to hear your periods have arrived but good to be on the meds & set for this round. Hopefully this is your month 🤞🏻

sunce being on metformin I’m ovulating between cycle 16-18 really. Much better than before! Hopefully combined with letrozole, it will work done magic.

@ellierose66 I’ve had AMH etc all checked on day 3, mine was high which indicated mild pcos. On my scan no cysts were found but possibly more than one follicle developing again aligning with pcos. Great to get both done & give you a good picture! Did you get day 21 bloods done to check progesterone too? (Not necessarily day 21 but 7 days after ovulation).

Obione1 · 01/08/2023 19:16

@ChipAndDip i went private, so I've effectively paid for scans. I've got 3 rounds & my scan this round is on the 9th to see if this one has worked.
How many rounds did you get? Are you on the NHS?
@ellierose66 i had both, all fine

Obione1 · 03/08/2023 22:34

@ellierose66 did you have your app today?

@ChipAndDip I've got my scan on the 9th & i'm a bit nervous bc I didn't really have a proper period, so I'm unsure whether that will have affected how the letrozole works & I have a horrible feeling it won't work because of that. But. we'll see in 6 days!

Obione1 · 08/08/2023 15:32

@ChipAndDip how did you get on? I've had a bit of a mess up - I started my second letrozole but then my proper period arrived 🙄 Soooo now I have to start again tonight & it's day 5, so I'm worried now it won't work. Eugh the drama

Lovemusic2015 · 08/08/2023 19:28

Hi ladies, CD3 here & started letrozole yesterday. Going to ring clinic tomorrow as they’ve told me to book in scan 10-12 days after starting it. What days did you do your scans?

@Obione1 that is so confusing. I had spotting for the first time in ages until my period properly started & I was worrying about when to start the tablets. Its all so stressful.

Obione1 · 08/08/2023 21:07

@Lovemusic2015 Yes, very confusing & for me, for the first round, my period was induced by provera - easy! This time, it was my first natural one for over a year, so I got confused by the long spotting and wasted a whole round of letrozole & now I'm worried what if this round is too late & I don't ovulate eugh.

I'm starting tonight (again) and last time, my scan was on day 13

Lovemusic2015 · 08/08/2023 21:11

@Obione1 so did you take one day of letrozole stop and then start again or what happened?

Obione1 · 09/08/2023 11:40

@Lovemusic2015 no i took the 5 days... my period arrived on the 5th day. So then my consultant said, just take it from day 5 of your period now, which was yesterday, so I'll be interested to see if it affects my ovulation taking it on day 5 rather than starting on day 2, like I did for the first round

Lovemusic2015 · 09/08/2023 18:21

@Obione1 ahh yes I understand now. Sure doctors are the experts so they know what they’re talking about. I’d probably track with ov sticks / dtd regularly in case you ovulate early with the double dose just to cover yourself maybe? Are you being scanned this cycle?

I’ve had an awful headache all day & had one yesterday too. Assuming that’s a side effect I’m having from it.
