Scan photo - confusion

Hi Everyone

I hope this is in the right place and that my rambling makes sense.

We went for our first scan on Monday (first pregnancy) and all went well. Quick scan, lady said the heartbeat is all ok and viable pregnancy. Felt a little bit rushed and I couldn't really see much due to mask and glasses flogging plus lots of grey but maybe I was expecting a little too much, tummy wiped and out of the door. I asked about a photo and was told they will be emailed across and theres a charity box for donations. Perfect, received the scan picture today and can see where baby is, but I expected to see a little bit more I guess. I have googled 12 week scans and you can clearly see that baby is well a baby. My LO just looks like a dot. I have seen a few family members scans and ones from friends and they look like babies.... am I being silly or is this normal? Willing to be told I need to give my head a wobble, I just expected a little bit more development I guess. My last period was 23rd Jan and due date given is Oct 29th. Will try and upload a photo now if I can hide the identifying information as we havent shared our news yet either. Thank you all :)

Call the hospital back and try again. If you start by saying 'I think I've been sent somebody else's scan because it says 17 weeks etc' they are more likely to listen to you than if they think you are complaining that you don't like the picture which it sounds like that what they thought when you called.

It doesn't look like a 12 week scan. I was 12w5d when I had my 1st scan and it was definitely a little baby jumping up and down. Yours looks earlier so I think they've sent the wrong one.

That scan is from a 7-8 week pregnancy. 27mm rempen is appropriate for 7 weeks and 6 days. There's a typo with 17 w 6 days. Could it be that your dates are wrong? Or they have given you someone else's scan!? Did you see your baby on the screen? Don't let them fob you off, that is not a 12 week pregnancy by any stretch of the imagination.

This is odd! All I can think is that the sonographer took a photo at a bad time- when they zoom and move around in the scan it can look like yours because it’s not focused on anything properly, the sonographer really had to zoom in and focus to get a (blurry) profile shot. Hopefully they’ve just given you a bad out of focus photo by mistake
But hope you get some answers- especially as the date says 17 weeks. Maybe the notes with the scan might clear things up a bit!

@LunaLula83

Its too early for a decent pic. My first scan was at 6 mths.

Guessing you arent in the UK?

Do you have your scan report? Normally shows what the baby is measuring in weeks.

Did the sonographer not mention the kidneys/liver/2 hands etc?
If not then is it written in the report?

I would be booking a private scan also, and as mentioned above maybe look at Groupon if money is an issue.

Fetus A has me wondering if you've been sent someone else's scan from a twin pregnancy.
You really need to contact PALS to complain but I'd also look at changing hospitals. The level of care you've so far recived is poor and I dont think I'd be comfortable staying there

I’d call again and start with “ l’ve been sent the wrong scan!”
It’ll be from a different perspective & make them wondered. Especially if there is the possibility u have another woman’s private details.

OP - are you sure this wasn’t an early (viability) scan?
It would be rushed, in comparison to a 12 week scan. You’d have your maternity notes by 12 weeks, had a booking meeting with a midwife, had an entire history done with the midwife.
You’d have a letter from the hospital and information about the anomalies that can be detected at 12 weeks (as opposed to at 20 weeks).
You’d see a spine.
Distinct body shape, head etc. Babies of 12 weeks are usually moving;my first had hiccups, my second wasn’t moving and went to be diagnosed with serious problems.
The point several of us are making is that they measure the foetus, describe and measure your foetus’s limbs, check heart, measure Michal fold and there’s the tests for Downs, Edwards etc.

Are you sure this isn’t a private scan at a very early stage?

Hi @ConnieCaterpillar I hope you get some answers- that’s definitely not a 12 week scan. My first thought was that it reminded me of this scan that I had with my second at six weeks, which looked like this. This was transvaginal too rather than over the top of the womb.

I hope you get to the bottom of it- I don’t think that’s your scan.

I had to have loads of early scans and this looks like a 7weekish scan and definitely not 12 or even 17w as the scan says.

What a poor response from the hospital. I’d contact them again and say you think their may have been a data breach as you believe you have someone else’s scan. I would also complain to PALs because fobbing you off as if you were being demanding isn’t a reasonable response in this situation.

Hope it all gets clarified really soon and congratulations on your pregnancy. Great news that baby’s heart beat sounded nice and strong.

Congratulations OP!
Your hospital are shit and unfortunately, it seems like you need to take a very assertive approach with them. I too would complain to PALS but also call back and emphasise how something either you have someone else's scan or the details are incorrect. Assertively ask to speak to a clinic midwife or sonographer and ask your questions.

Nats1984 · 22/04/2021 16:12

Can you see your details on the picture? Is it possible it’s not yours? That’s not a 12 week scan. Did you see your details on the monitor? Somethings up there .

Maybe request a different clinician altogether.

Hi everyone

Sorry just catching up on messages and a had a telephone call.

Firstly, I received a call from community midwife who was lovely. Hope this isn't outing but she commented that the moon landings in the 60s were clearer (which made me feel a little bit better)... she has told me not to worry, sit tight, have a cup of tea and she is going to chase up for me. She just said there are a number of anomalies and it's not unheard of for mistakes to be made but she will get to the bottom of it. So will wait until I have a response and then go from there.
Interestingly she also asked if I'd been told my womb is heart shaped as that was on the docs she could see. I've not heard this before, so she is requesting a new scan to check this information but said it will likely be with the same sonographer.

In terms of notes and booking in, I contacted my GP after we did a few home tests, they arent doing face to face appointments so I had to drop a sample off and drop it in the bin. Received confirmation that it was positive and a phone call to say a midwife will be in contact, about 10 days later I had a call to book a telephone appt where the midwife introduced herself and asked some health Qs and i had the chance to ask some Qs. I then received a letter from our local hospital to book in to the clinic for a scan, had the scan early this week and that's it so far. I haven't received any notes or other information apart from the letter to book a scan, and just the one longer phone call plus the one today. Is that normal? I'm so sorry for the silly questions, just not sure what to expect plus what to expect alongside COVID restrictions etc. I presumed this was all NHS as it's my local hospital etc and I've not been asked to pay for anything etc.

glad the midwife called you and hope you get to the bottom of this. It does sound like they might have sent you the wrong picture!

@ConnieCaterpillar glad your midwife is on your side & dealing with it! There has been a colossal fuck up some where with your scan, cannot believe you weren’t told how far along you were or sent away with all the correct documents. Just wow, NHS!

Re; midwife appointments, I only had 1 booking in appointment prior to my scan. However this was face to face, but I guess areas are different. So I’d say you’re fine there. Then had another appointment at I think 16 weeks? Are you booked in for that?

Anyway, don’t let this cloud what IS a happy time. Your baby has no idea what the hell is going on and is growing happily Grin Congratulations!

Gosh how stressful for you OP, I think you've been sent the wrong photos, and as pp have said you should have been given some notes as well with all the measurements and a confirmation of your due date etc. If you can get a private scan, it'd probably be a good idea to put your mind at rest.

Report
QforCucumber · 22/04/2021 16:25

@ConnieCaterpillar were your bloods or the NT measurements done at the scan? The 12 week scan is the Downs and Trisomy test and they'd do all of these measurements too.

Agree with others - it's either the worst picture ever that has had the yolk sac labelled incorrectly, or it's a scan from someone else who is 6-8 weeks along. I had an early scan at 9 weeks where you basically couldn't see the baby, it was only a transvaginal scan that showed anything at all due to the position and size of the baby - the difference at 12 weeks was huge. I've also had an early scan at 7 weeks where you couldn't see much although the sonographer was careful to take good photos - but before about 10 weeks transvaginal is definitely better by a country mile. Glad your midwife is chasing.

I don't think I got my note until after my 12 week scan either (which was closer to 14 weeks) so I wouldn't worry - just ask your midwife for them again, plus if any other action is needed for a proper booking appointment (they should ask you lots of questions about your health history, ethnic origin etc). Covid has disrupted care a lot.

Have you had any screening bloods done? You usually have an appointment to have bloods with or not long after your booking appointment/phone call.

I'm 17 weeks, my due date is the last week in Sept. I'm guessing they've sent you someone else's scan, I'm not even convinced it's a fetal ultrasound. Definitely go back, don't let them fob you off, someone has made an error somewhere here. Did they measure NT and take bloods?
