Scan photo - confusion

Hi Everyone

I hope this is in the right place and that my rambling makes sense.

We went for our first scan on Monday (first pregnancy) and all went well. Quick scan, lady said the heartbeat is all ok and viable pregnancy. Felt a little bit rushed and I couldn't really see much due to mask and glasses flogging plus lots of grey but maybe I was expecting a little too much, tummy wiped and out of the door. I asked about a photo and was told they will be emailed across and theres a charity box for donations. Perfect, received the scan picture today and can see where baby is, but I expected to see a little bit more I guess. I have googled 12 week scans and you can clearly see that baby is well a baby. My LO just looks like a dot. I have seen a few family members scans and ones from friends and they look like babies.... am I being silly or is this normal? Willing to be told I need to give my head a wobble, I just expected a little bit more development I guess. My last period was 23rd Jan and due date given is Oct 29th. Will try and upload a photo now if I can hide the identifying information as we havent shared our news yet either. Thank you all :)

That's a really bad picture. Can you get in touch and say you want to check you've been given the right scan? Just to make them look and talk you through it.

I also don’t think that’s a 12 week scan photo .... mine was much clearer than that 25+ years ago!

Hoe you have better pictures (and more info) at your scan next week.

Hi @ConnieCaterpillar if you don't get the answers regarding scan quality defo complain to pals!

As for heart shaped uterus you should have been told about this at point of scan a bicornuate uterus usually comes symptoms like irregular bleeds so you would have been aware. Maybe they got your scans mixed up with someone who went in for some other checks?

Even at 7 weeks I could see a general baby like shape . What a strange time for you . I would go to Epu and request to be seen before next week. I hope you’re ok

Glad they are rescanning you. I’d say they’ve sent the wrong photo. Please do update us next week

Hi OP,

If you do have a heart shape uterus please make sure they monitor you properly.
I have one (diagnosed at a miscarriage) and I mentioned it to everyone during my next pregnancy only to be told it's nothing and don't worry about it.

I carried to 40+3, having been told the head was down and engaged but at 40+2, they found the baby was actually transverse and gave me the option to turn him. I had a team of doctors, consultants and midwives all telling me this was the best option but I stuck to my guns, said no and opted for a C Section to make sure he arrived safely. It was only at this very last moment that a different consultant took the heart shape uterus info seriously and agreed with me re C Section and not turning the baby as he didnt have room to turn, hence being transverse!

A good thing too as he was over 10lb and turning would have been a painful disaster I was told afterwards. So please, make sure you arm yourself with as much info as possible and ensure they listen to you, if you do have one.

(He was ok but had an infection and one of his fingers is crooked due to being squashed inside me.)

What an awful experience for you. When you had your scan did the sonographer point out the head, hands, feet etc? Did you see a ‘baby’ shape on the screen? If not I would suspect you are earlier than you think but still a very unsatisfactory experience. Good luck next week

How weird. I had the yolk sac pointed out when I had my 12 week scan at 11 weeks but only in a 'look, there the yolk sac, it's nearly gone because your placenta is coming along' point of interest.

If they didn't talk about your due date based on measurements, and take a nuchal measurement, I guess you aren't 12 weeks yet. 27.9 mm would suggest early pregnancy too if it's the right size measurement- mine was 40something at 11 weeks and 70something when I went back at 13 weeks for another go at the nuchal measurement.

There is nothing on that scan - it must be another patients? Also the yolk sac has disappeared by 12 weeks so why would they label it?

Did you see the image on the screen yourself? They point the monitor so you can see from the bed. You should be able to see everything, including a heartbeat and the baby moving. My scan at 12 weeks very much looked like a baby, he even had his dads nose! Which he very much has now lol

Ah op how awful the treatment you've had!

Try and relax but I would be tempted to contact EPAU as surely this much stress isn't good for you!

Sending you Thanks

Have attached my 12 and 19 week scans for reference, these were 6 years ago.

Sounds like you have a lovely community midwife.

@Thesnakeminder

Nope. Don’t believe a word of this. That isn’t even an ultrasound image- what are all the tiny white dots?!

Do you mean the ones all in a line? They’re what measurement lines.

Erm, isn’t that the point of the OPs post? That she thinks something isn’t right.

No, I mean that I this is not an ultrasound image of pregnancy by anyone’s stretch of imagination and a fabrication. Mumsnet have deleted my post. Hey ho!

The entire image is made up of dots. This is not an ultrasound scan. Confused

Is a private scan affordable?

Hope you're ok x

That’s a very odd image - I’ve never seen an ultrasound where you can see something else in the background. Hope you get it sorted soon.

Isn’t that the reflection of her taking the picture of the picture on her pc, with her phone?

@ThePawtriarchy Possibly - I would have just done a screenshot and cropped to remove any identifying info.

BeingATwatItsABingThing I don’t mean the measurement lines, the entire image is made up of tiny dots. This looks like polystyrene balls behind a piece of glass frankly, organised into some semblance of an ultrasound image. There isn’t even a uterus on that image and it isn’t ultrasound.

What a rotten experience, especially as you were on your own. I hope next week's scan is a much more positive experience.
