Help needed! Positive test after miscarriage

Hi,

Just looking for advice, I had a D&C 4 nearly 5 weeks ago. I was never told to take a pregnancy test afterwards but since reading on here I feel it might be best especially as we are trying again before I even get my period back. I've just taken one and it says pregnant 1-2 weeks. I've heard it can take a long time to get a negative result but just wondering how long it does take to get a negative result and is this a false positive. I guess the only way I can really tell is by taking another one next week but I think I will be stressing out for a whole week! We had sex again two weeks ago, how possible is it that a pregnancy test would show the results that early?

I rang midwife on birthing unit and she gives a completely different story, she said it can take up to 6 weeks for hormones to settle down after surgery and wasnt sure why I was told any different Confused and if I am concerned to call the GP for a blood test. I guess I should just wait till next Friday and see where I am at again

I have no useful information to give you but have read your thread and wanted to send you Flowers. The waiting must be so hard, just take very good care of yourself x

Russell19 · 26/06/2020 07:50

It's so irritating when mesical professionals say different things. Can you get a blood test to check your levels?

Bexsta101 · 26/06/2020 08:25

Thank you @MrsKappa the waiting it the worst part of it all. @Russell19 I'm waiting for my GP to open and then asking for a blood test

I’m 10 days out from my MVA and got a very strong positive on a cheap test. I’m going to do another next Friday, but official one for the hospital isn’t until the 7th but would like to see when my levels drop.

Bexsta101 · 26/06/2020 21:16

I'm now day 39....I cant believe the hormone lasts this long!!??

OP posts:
Bexsta101 · 26/06/2020 21:18

I've read if you do 1 test a day in the morning and if it gets darker and darker it's a new pregnancy but if it gets lighter it's just residual hormone so going to try this for the next four days. I'll give an update Tuesday and will also call my GP monday to ask for advice

OP posts:
Em39ma · 26/06/2020 22:56

@Bexsta101 worth trying. That is basically why I’m doing mine from now, so I can make sure it is getting lighter. After last time taking 8 weeks, I don’t want to be left in the dark having to keep having my bloods taken.

BenScalesIsAGod · 26/06/2020 22:59

You definitely need to go back to gynae as it could be retained products. You should have been advised to test after 3 weeks and if positive to call them? This happened to me recently it was retained products and I had to have a second procedure.

Bexsta101 · 27/06/2020 06:52

@BenScalesIsAGod unfortunately no body told me anything and now I'm getting conflicting information from medical professionals which is great!

OP posts:
Bexsta101 · 27/06/2020 07:16

@BenScalesIsAGod would I not have any weird symptoms if I had retained product?

OP posts:
Livingmagicallyagain · 27/06/2020 07:27

So sorry for your loss. How many weeks were you? I had a positive test 6 weeks after my miscarriage. A friend also did and she was 6 weeks pregnant when she had the D&C so it can take time. Neither of us had retained products nor infection. I was scanned regularly.

Fingers crossed for you!

Bexsta101 · 27/06/2020 07:50

@Livingmagicallyagain I am six weeks Monday. I've just done a cheapy one and it was extremely light line so I'm thinking hopefully this is it leaving my system

Bexsta101 · 27/06/2020 08:29

Friday was done at 4 in the afternoon and Saturday was done first wee of the morning. I know they are meant to be invalid after 10 mins but they look the same to me

It could just be slow drop but typically hormone levels drop quickly after surgery as everything is taken out straight away. Or should be. The advice is 3 weeks usually to retest. I personally think you need a scan. Or at least your hcg testing.

I didn’t really have any weird symptoms.

BenScalesIsAGod · 27/06/2020 09:53

Those tests both look positive. 48 hour hcg to see if rising or falling. EPAU should still be looking after you, not the GP really.

Bexsta101 · 27/06/2020 10:17

@BenScalesIsAGod so I should test in 48 hours? That's the thing the EPAU said I should be pregnant but the digital one could be that I was only 1 weeks last week and 2 this week hence why is hasn't changed to 2-3 weeks yet...not sure I believe that and then the midwife gave us completely conflicting information that the hormones could be in my system for up to 6 weeks and she didnt know why we were told any different yet last week when we rang the midwife they said they I shouldnt have the hormones in my system anymore...its all very confusing but the thing that everyone has said is just wait and test in a week...I'm going to call the drs Monday and demand for a HCG test

OP posts:
Bexsta101 · 27/06/2020 10:18

@BenScalesIsAGod how long did you bleed for after your surgery??

OP posts:
BenScalesIsAGod · 27/06/2020 11:15

No you need a blood test and then another one 48 hours after. If it rises then it’s a new pregnancy. If it falls or is static then it’s left over hormones / retained products and you’d need a scan to see.

I bled for about a couple of weeks but then had a period a month later which was very start stop and heavy. Problem is I think that can be normal too. Hope you get sorted. It’s really horrible waiting. I won’t tell you my story because it all took several months to sort!

Dbop100 · 27/06/2020 11:42

Hello

New here. I had a miscarriage 3 weeks ago. My local EPU did a blood test for me during and I was 46 hcg, then instead of doing a home pregnancy test (which I found too upsetting) a week later they did another blood test for me and I was at 2 hcg. It was awfully sad but it helped to have the clarity of the numbers going down to confirm it, pregnancy tests are a bit ambiguous. The blood results both times came back the next day. @Bexsta101 it might be worth reaching out to your EPU to ask for a blood test today? waiting is understandably stressful and upsetting. Good luck xx

Bexsta101 · 27/06/2020 13:26

@Dbop100 my EPU don't seem to care, they are just palming me off saying it's a new pregnancy. I'm going to call my GP Monday and explain the situation

OP posts:
Dbop100 · 27/06/2020 14:10

@Bexsta101 sorry to hear they’re being difficult. They should be more empathetic to you. Good idea to get your GP on side, really hope they can help you.xx

HansBanans · 27/06/2020 14:38

@Bexsta101 sorry to hear about your miscarriage and what you're going through. It sounds like you've not been given very good advice. Mirroring what other posters have said, when I had my MC they took bloods to get my hcg levels and then I had to go back for more bloods 48 hours later. Even though the level had gone down I was advised to take a pregnancy test two weeks later and report back if it was positive.

Fingers crossed you get better answers from your GP x

Bexsta101 · 27/06/2020 14:40

@HansBanans how many weeks after surgery did they advice you to take a pregnancy test? Thank you for the support

OP posts:
HansBanans · 27/06/2020 14:43

@Bexsta101 I'm really sorry, I skimmed the thread and didn't realise you'd had surgery. I didn't need to have the surgery but from when my bleeding started it was about 3-4 weeks later x
