Positive opk after a miscarriage

1002 replies

jinglebellmel · 19/05/2016 20:28

Hi, hoping someone a bit more knowledgable than me can help me figure this out! I had a medically managed miscarriage 9 days ago and have had strong positives on opks for the last 2 days. I know that they pick up hcg so presumed that this was just picking up left over hormones from the pregnancy. Today I had a very faint positive on a pregnancy test so looks as though my hormone levels are nearly back to normal, but the opk is still coming up with a strong positive. The pregnancy test is 10 miu and the opk 20 - so my question is this still just left over hormones when the pregnancy tests are getting lighter and the opks aren't?

Sorry you're feeling rubbish Allium, I can totally sympathise. I started spotting today so I think Af is on its way, I don't normally spot before hand but I did last month so I guess maybe my hormones are still a mess. I'm so disappointed, I knew the chances were slim but I've got a positive the first month of trying with both of my pregnancies and I think deep down I believed it would happen again :( Seems mad a few weeks ago I was desperate for Af and now I seeing blood is crushing and reminds me of the miscarriage.

Mel: mc 9th may, cd 25 1st cycle since mc

Sorry to hear that Mel. You never know as it's not over until AF rears her head. How long was your cycle before MC?

Isn't it a 30% chance if everything is working properly? So it should happen within 3 months I reckon.

For me, it's a 5% chance because of my age so it might never happen as I don't think I can wait a year. What with trying for 9 months unsuccessfully last year as well.

I know what you mean about seeing blood, my heart sank.

I started running again today hoping that will shake things up a bit.

Good luck everyone!

Allium40 · 30/06/2016 19:50

OK, sorry for all the negativity. This has made me feel better:

www.netmums.com/pregnancy/g/would-you-conceive-it

I'm going to be more realistic about things and hope to be pregnant by my next birthday in October.

jinglebellmel · 01/07/2016 06:20

Normally 26 days, so I'll be expecting Af today or tomorrow. I was trying to keep a little hope but my temp has dropped this morning do I think it is coming.

That's interesting Allium, much better odds. Anecdotally I know a few people over 40 who fell pregnant very quickly or without trying at all. Hopefully it'll be you soon. I think the next 2 months are doubtful (still thinking about what I've read about hot tub and sperm) and then statistically it should take 3-4 months. I'm not sure I can keep smep up that long!

Thanks for the link Allium, that's really interesting. It took us nearly a year to conceive first time (age 34) and 2 cycles to conceive the second time (age 38). I think already having DC goes in your favour - your body has the blue print & knows what it's doing. Also, doesn't the chance of multiples increase after 40 as your ovaries can start to release more than one egg?!

Am also a runner & was desperate to get back to it after the surgery to get some endorphins going!

Bear: SMM 16th May, CD4 1st cycle post mc

Bee1234 · 01/07/2016 11:54

Thank you for the link Allium.. There are some interesting figures there. Def all positive and glad you're feeling better.

Bee: mmc 7th may, ERPC 19th may. CD 15th, 1st cycle post mc.

I know we are all feeling a bit bummed at the moment. Post mc really does suck. I genuinely believe we will all have our time again though. Whether it be in one month or 3 months. I started exercising a week ago and I have to say it makes a whole world of difference on how I feel in myself. Endorphins are key!

Have a good Wkend ladies. I'm hoping my OH starts to feel better so we can dtd just a couple of times. Chances are slim though, I'm sure I've already ovulated and spem went out the window when he fell sick a couple of days ago.

Allium40 · 01/07/2016 12:02

Bee - Thanks for your positivity and your previous message which I missed :-) Exercise really helps - both mentally and physically. I was a bit scared of running in the TWW but just gonna carry on this time (when it gets to that). Did you manage to get any swimmers in there before OH got ill?

Bear - Are you also TTC#3 like me? Yes 2 eggs can get released when you are older. Scary thought but I'd go for that, would you?

Mel: Fingers crossed for you. Hope the witch stays away. Or as my fertility book says, we shouldn't look at it like that, we should see it as another month to 'nourish the soil'!

So @ 1st July we are:

Allium: MC 3rd May, cd3 of 2nd cycle post-MC
Mel: mc 9th may, cd 26 1st cycle since mc
Bear: SMM 16th May, CD4 1st cycle post mc
Bee: mmc 7th may, ERPC 19th may. CD 15th, 1st cycle post mc

Anyone else?

jinglebellmel · 01/07/2016 13:22

Good positivity Bee, just what we need! :) I think maybe I should start some sort of exercise, since the mc I've been eating and drinking far too much, I really need to snap out of it and get back to some sort of healthy lifestyle!

On another note, do any of you spot before Af? I never have previously but this month and last I've started spotting and cramping a couple of days before I'd expect Af. I only normally have a 13 day leutal phase anyway so don't want it to become even shorter. Just wondered if anyone else had this?

OP posts:
Allium40 · 01/07/2016 13:40

I used to get that Mel. No idea why but I thought in my case it might be a drop in progesterone so I cranked up the B-vitamins. It stopped after a while and my cycle went back to 28 days. Then we gave up ttc and fell pg by accident!

Are you taking any conception vitamins?

Could it be implantation bleeding?

Or perhaps hormones readjusting.

jinglebellmel · 01/07/2016 14:16

I'm taking the seven seas vits, maybe I need to take some vitamin b too. I don't think it's implantation bleeding, I suppose hormones still adjusting like you say. Hopefully it's not a permanent change, I liked my lovely predictable cycles!

OP posts:
Allium40 · 01/07/2016 14:38

Have a look at what your vitamins contain - if it's a prenatal one then I'm sure it has the necessary B vitamins (B6 I think), vit C, magnesium and zinc.

jinglebellmel · 01/07/2016 15:28

Thanks Allium I will have a look. Although thinking about it the only 2 cycles it's happened have been the months I've been taking these vitamins! I'm sure it's probably down to the miscarriage though.

OP posts:
Bee1234 · 02/07/2016 09:13

Mel in the past I've spotted a few times before AF and when I read up on it, it says it's just old blood being released as the lining breaks down. It also says not to count this as part as your cycle, and CD1 should start when Af starts flowing! I'm sure it's common post mc too. My initial thoughts when I read ur post was implantation bleeding! I hope AF stays away!

Allium, yes we did manage a couple of times before the positive OPK and he's feeling a bit better now so we may get one more bd in. We haven't stuck to smep, but hey ho, at least I can blame it on that if nothing happens this month.

Allium40 · 02/07/2016 09:55

Bee - hopefully you got enough swimmers in there for ov!

My DD1 was puking last night so I'm convinced that we're all gonna get it and that will affect my eggs and OH's sperm. Have got to snap out of this negativity. I felt OK around ov and during the TWW because I had hope. I just feel so empty this week.

My temps must have been totally out last month as I'm starting this month much higher than last month (when I wasn't temping properly)!

Have a good weekend all!

x

jinglebellmel · 02/07/2016 16:50

Af is here and temp has plummeted, at least I know and will be enjoying some wine tonight! Hope you're okay Allium, I know what you mean about the empty feeling, it's hard letting go of that last bit of hope for the month.

Bee, fingers crossed for you, I think it's the ones before o that really count so good that you managed some.

I think I've accepted that between dh boiled hot tub sperm and my wonky, spotty, post mc cycles this might take a few months. I'm trying to be a bit relaxed about it as I can't have more months like this one, all I've done is think about ttc and it can't be healthy.

OP posts:
Allium40 · 02/07/2016 17:09

Oh bummer Mel. But well done for being positive. Yes I know what you mean, it has become an obsession for me.

During AF, I feel like it's like being in limbo as nothing is happening, but I guess that's not strictly true.

Bee - Zita West's top tip is to dtd 3 times a week and she probably knows better than SMEP. Exhausting though! OH would be well up for that!!

jinglebellmel · 02/07/2016 17:49

I'm trying but not sure how long the positivity will last! I know what you mean, at least once Af is over you're back to trying and there's a chance of some good news, so hopefully you'll feel a bit better then.

I found smep exhausting, worked out as 4 nights in a row last month, dh didn't know what had hit him!

OP posts:
Allium40 · 04/07/2016 10:45

Mel - I just remembered I had spotting in that first cycle after MC. It came around 3 days before full flow. I reckon it must be normal.

Hope you're all doing OK and had nice weekends.

Nothing to report my end. Have started doing a bit of fertility yoga in the evenings and am trying to drink grapefruit juice to prep for fertile time! And am not going to drink at all this month - even though I have a friend's birthday dinner on my fertile day - that will be tricky!

x

Bee1234 · 04/07/2016 16:54

Fertility yoga sounds good Allium, il have to look it up! I also checked out Zita Wests top tips and feeling a bit better about not totally sticking to spem! I guess I'm officially in the 2ww now! Trying not to obsess too much about it just yet ( easier said than done ) OH said I got a little crazed around OV so I know I def need to chill and not make him feel like all I care about is ttc ( again easier said than done! )

Are you feeling ok? You didn't come down with the sickness did you?

Hope everyone else is doing ok :)

jinglebellmel · 04/07/2016 19:00

What does grapefruit do Allium? I've been reading a lot of studies online and found a few interesting bits - vitamin c seems to do amazing things for sperm, so I've got that for dh and a high dose of folic acid has been linked to quicker conception and fewer miscarriages, so I've upped that. I've banned alcohol :( and processed foods. It's a right laugh in my house at the moment!

Ooo good luck with your 2 ww bee. I know what you mean about being crazed, dh didn't know what had hit him and now I'm outside of my fertile window I've lost all interest.

OP posts:
Allium40 · 05/07/2016 09:07

Hi all,

Luckily no one else came down with the vom bug but me and OH have been feeling slightly queasy for a few days so maybe we have a mild version.

Grapefruit juice is supposed to help with cm. I drink a glass a day in the first fortnight (and take epo).

Mel, OH is actually taking folic acid as well as I read that helps - along with vit c and zinc.

Now, apologies for tmi but how do you tell the difference between cm and spunk left over from the night before?

I'll leave you with that thought :-)

thatsnotmybear · 05/07/2016 10:26

Grin Allium I've wondered that myself before! Although I saw a documentary on tv a few years ago about how life begins and it was fascinating, it showed how ewcm creates a sort of sticky ladder for the sperm to travel up from the vagina into the cervix. So maybe it's better not to check cm the morning after DTD and leave it to do it's thing?!

On a different note my smear test was due in March but found out I was pg after I got the letter. I need to get it out of the way this week but could only book for Friday which will be CD11. My plan was to potentially DTD on CD11, CD12, CD13 (and CD14 if we can face it!) What do you all think? Will it interfere with ttc?

thatsnotmybear · 05/07/2016 10:41

Just did a bit of googling and am now wondering if it's too soon for me to have a smear test after SMM? It will be 7 weeks 4 days on Fri.

Allium40 · 05/07/2016 11:19

Hi Bear,

How are you doing?

I was told I should have my smear around days 20-25 (quite limiting!) which wouldn't be any good if ttc. Maybe call your GP and ask?

Re the cm, I just go on what's in underwear rather than having a poke around! But I'm sure some of it is post-dtd. I always notice it the next day. Annoying as its during the fertile time we are dtd (obvs) and that's when there should be cm but it could also be spunk!!!

Bee1234 · 05/07/2016 12:27

Hahahah allium this CM talk is making me laugh! It's true though, it's almost impossible to differentiate! Glad to hear you didn't come down fully with the bug!

Mel.. I'm in the same boat, can't be bothered with it at all now! Oops!

Bear I'm sure having a smear would be ok as its been 7 weeks but perhaps check when u are making the appointment?
