Positive opk after a miscarriage

Hi, hoping someone a bit more knowledgable than me can help me figure this out! I had a medically managed miscarriage 9 days ago and have had strong positives on opks for the last 2 days. I know that they pick up hcg so presumed that this was just picking up left over hormones from the pregnancy. Today I had a very faint positive on a pregnancy test so looks as though my hormone levels are nearly back to normal, but the opk is still coming up with a strong positive. The pregnancy test is 10 miu and the opk 20 - so my question is this still just left over hormones when the pregnancy tests are getting lighter and the opks aren't?

I'm doing alright thank you Allium, just eagerly awaiting fertile window in a few days and hoping to get a reliable positive OPK. I feel more optimistic now I know I've had a proper AF (heavier and with more cramps than usual, which hopefully means my body's had a good clear out ready for this cycle!)

I thought about asking the receptionist whether I should be having a smear test at this point when I booked, but I wasn't sure if she'd know and they always seem keen to get you off the phone. I'll just have to ask the nurse on Friday; presumably she'll have my medical notes, the hospital did ask my permission to write to my GP.

Back to cm, I find it impossible to tell what's what after DTD, as I use the fertility gels that mimic ewcm as well, so there's probably some of that mixed in too. Nice!

Allium40 · 05/07/2016 18:43

I think we're at a similar stage in our cycles Bear. I'm gearing up to fertile time too.

Have you had any results with the gels?

I'm convinced that fertilisation is happening but implantation is failing. I wonder why that would be....

jinglebellmel · 05/07/2016 19:49

Bear mine was due when I was pregnant too and they told me I needed to wait until 12 weeks after the miscarriage or there is a higher risk of false positive abnormal results.

Haha I don't know Allium, im ashamed to admit I've read up on it before though and apparently cm will form into a ball if you drop it in water and won't dry out if you leave it on your hand for 10 mins! I've never tried either but supposedly that is the way to tell them apart! I've got dh on a multi vit with folic acid in, not sure if some extra would be good but I think that would be pushing it - I've got him taking about 5 pills a day and he's tolerating it but I can tell he thinks I've lost the plot!

Allium, I read an article about baby aspirin increasing chances of implantation, opinion seems quite divided about it though. A high dose of vitamin e is also supposed to help www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/science-news/11943048/Aspirin-a-day-could-boost-chance-of-having-a-baby.html From what I've read if fertilisation is taking place but not implantation then it would either be that luteal phase is too short or that womb lining isn't thick enough.

Welcome blossom, sorry for your loss, it sounds like you've had a tough time physically too. How are you feeling?

Welcome Blossom.

Sorry to hear what you've been through. Hope from here on you have an easier time and that your cycle returns to normal asap.

Thanks Mel for the tips - I'll read up on aspirin and vitamin e.

Such a mystery that I'm getting cramps from 5dpo until AF just like when I was pg. I presumed it was implantation and the uterus growing/preparing but then the blastocyst not dividing/implanting properly. I had it a few times last year, last cycle and my first ever ttc cycle back in 2009!

Allium, I had the same this month. Cramping from 4 or 5 days after ov until Af, I also had it while pregnant with my son, but I didn't have it with this most recent pregnancy. I wasn't sure if it meant anything or not.

Blossom, I think you can od on some vits, or some can stop others from being absorbed well etc, but it doesn't sound as though you're having really strong doses.

Did you feel something was happening Mel or do you get that normally? x

Bee1234 · 06/07/2016 09:19

Hello Blossom, sorry that you find yourself here and sorry for your loss. Sounds like you had a really tough time with it, that couldn't have been easy! I read that carrying on with our vitamins helps our bodies to recover quicker so you are right to continue with yours.

I have also seen articles on baby aspirin which is meant to reduce the chance of MC but I think it's meant to be prescribed? Im torn with that one.

Allium on spem she does mention how the mind can lead us in to believing we are pg because we want it so badly and therefore produces pg like symptoms even when we are not. Not that I think your symptoms are fabricated but this could offer a solution?

thatsnotmybear · 06/07/2016 09:32

Welcome Blossom. I'm sorry you find yourself here, it sounds like you've had quite an ordeal. I had SMM too and it took 4 weeks for me to get a negative hpt so I can sympathise with what the waiting feels like. I read that it can vary widely from person to person so hopefully it won't be too much longer for you.

Bee1234 · 06/07/2016 09:37

Yes I forgot to mention I also had to have ERPC. I was fortunate enough to have a negative hpt 2 weeks post op. So like bear said, it really does vary.

Also Allium, going back to what I said, I'm looking out for ANY sign that this month could be my month and so far nothing. So this could put her theory right out the window!

thatsnotmybear · 06/07/2016 09:46

Allium, I'm a fertility gel expert! I've used Conceive Plus, Preseed, Balance Activ Fertility Gel and Spray, and Yes Baby. So basically, all of them! I don't produce much CM myself (I read that this can happen in your 30's). I can't remember what we were using when we conceived our DS (possibly Preseed) but we were using the Balance Activ gel with the most recent pregnancy. It's now been discontinued but the Yes Baby is very similar. The only downside is they're not available in most shops and they're not particularly cheap. But I do think they're effective.

thatsnotmybear · 06/07/2016 10:52

Sorry Bee, crossed posts!

Bee1234 · 06/07/2016 11:02

Haha that's ok Bear! Great info on the gels!

Allium40 · 06/07/2016 11:26

The weird thing is I had the cramps on the month I conceived when we weren't trying. I just presumed they were for AF but they were way too early.

Bee1234 · 06/07/2016 11:47

Ah right, so that definitely doesn't prove that theory then! Anyway I think we are intune enough with our bodies to know when something is really going on..

I also had cramps last time about a week after ov and didn't even think the 2 were related until I got my positive.

I hope you are able to find some answers

jinglebellmel · 06/07/2016 12:37

We weren't trying with my son and I had the cramps so definitely wasn't imagined then, but could quite easily have been in this cycle just gone. Allium, I don't normally get them, so I did think something might be happening and just didn't progress, although it could equally have been some hormonal thing as they don't seem back to normal yet, or wishful thinking, I'm really not sure.

I'm on cd 6 today and after my usual short, three day period I'm still spotting every now and then. This happened last month right up to ov, so annoying. I guess it must be hormonal but I hoped after having ov last cycle and another Af it would have all settled back down to normal by now. I've never felt further from being pregnant than I do now :(

OP posts:
Allium40 · 06/07/2016 13:06

Mel - I think you're a cycle behind me and last month I was spotting on day 6 and 7 which I don't normally do. So I'm sure that's normal too. It doesn't mean you won't conceive this month.

Don't be disheartened. I strongly believe the cramps are implantation so things nearly happened last month for you and it's a 1 in 4 chance so you'd be lucky for it to happen first time.

Once you get a day or 2 into your cycle, you'll start feeling more positive. I'm reading a book which says that the post-AF but pre-OV point in the cycle is where we feel most positive and creative. I think this is true. So hang on in there.

Allium40 · 06/07/2016 14:17

So my research tells me:

Implantation failure causes three-quarters of lost pregnancies!

Human embryos typically produce a chemical called trypsin, which signals the womb to prepare its lining for implantation (perhaps this is what we can feel).

At the time of implantation, the outer layer of the blastocyst (the trophoblast) invade the arterial walls of the uterus, displacing the mother’s own cells. Sounds painful!

This article has lots of useful info:

acupuncturepregnancy.com.au/how-to-improve-implantation-of-an-embryo/

Maybe it's just an odds thing. Or perhaps a luteal deficiency which I may have had last year.

Allium40 · 06/07/2016 15:07

I'm such a control freak!

thatsnotmybear · 06/07/2016 15:15

Thanks Allium, that's really interesting reading, especially as I have my first acupuncture session this weekend, right before ov.
