Short Luteal Phase

mascaraisamust · 05/07/2015 22:57

So after 6 months of ttc I've worked out I've got a short luteal phase of 9 days, however it could be even less. I get a positive opk on day 19 and 9 days later AF appears. I'm fearing it could be less that 9 days if I ovulate 24-36 hours after a postive opk. No suprises that there hasn't been a bfp yet. I'm thinking this is my obstacle. Seems I've tried everything else. Do I go to my GP? Is there any point? On preconception vitamins with b6 in and have been in them for three months and no changes. Also AF is really painful every month, wondering if there is more to this. Any ideas? Or anyone experienced/ing similar?

Maybe your uterus just needed an extra cycle to heal after your emc mascara? It must be very frustrating waiting to get that opportunity to try again but hopefully you will be back on track next cycle.

Sanch1 · 23/09/2015 09:58

Not posted on this thread before, but have lurked a lot as I think I have a short luteal phase.

Mascara, I read on fertility friend that temp can take a dip on day of ovulation before shooting up after, not for everyone, and not often but it does happen. You are lucky if you can that every month as you'd be able to pinpoint ov without necessarily having to wait for the sustained temp rise.

Mine dropped quite a bit today so I'm hoping I might get a +ve OPK later. My first month of temping.

mrsmugoo · 23/09/2015 12:20

You ovulate 12-36 hours AFTER a positive ovulation test.

I got my positive on Thursday of last week and my temperature rise on Saturday morning, meaning I ovulated sometime between Friday morning and Saturday morning.

mascaraisamust · 23/09/2015 16:19

Hi Sanch, welcome. How long have you been ttc?

Mrs, you've nearly done a week Smile fingers crossed for you! I'm wishing those pessaries to work!

Opk is just stuck on nearly there but not quite there. I know this month I wasnt supposed to be trying anyway but part of me had hope as when I was scanned they said my uterus was nice and thick and looked like it was good to go. Ah well what can you do.

I could have sworn I had tingly nipples today...but I'm not going down that fruitless road of symptom spotting! Hmm

mascaraisamust · 23/09/2015 19:02

Haha Mrs, it's so hard not to.

Sanch1 · 24/09/2015 09:30

Thanks Mrs, I was kind of aware of that but my cycles are all over the place so just trying to get used to all this charting and testing stuff!

Can you ovulate without a positive OPK? Last month I had a definate positive (wasnt temping) then got AF 6 days later, hence my concern about a super short Luteal phase. I had that temp drop yesterday and a significant rise today so I'm wondering if I ov'd yesterday even though no positive OPK? I did have a slighter darker line than my normal barely there one the day before but it was no where near positive. Guess I'll find out over the next couple days if my temp stays up.

Hi mascara! Been ttc #2 since coming off the pill in March (#1 took one shag first month!) Took 12 weeks to get a proper period, then I've had a couple normal-ish for me (28-35 days) cycles, then last month after starting OPK's I got a shock with AF 6 days after a positive, making the cyle 25 days. Also concerned that since coming off the pill AF is super short and super light. Saw my GP who said it was all nothing to worry about and I was still settling down after stopping the pill. Said I wasnt too old (nearly 34) and to come back in March if still nothing. From looking at this thread and other forums I've been taking selenium, asprin and Vitamin B complex in the hope that might do something!

Its all new to me after falling so quickly with #1!!! And DH thinks I'm a loon!

mrsmugoo · 24/09/2015 11:26

You you can - I'm not massively clued up on regular OPKs as I've always used the clear blue digital ones but I believe with the regular OPKs you can miss the surge (i.e if you test in the morning the surge could be in the afternoon/evening) and so you would think you'd not got a positive. However if you've got a definite temp spike then that confirms you've ovulated (past tense). Are your temps reliable? i.e. at exactly the same time every day, literally the first thing you do before you even move a muscle out of bed?

6 days is a super short LP you're right (7/8 days is my norm so I know how disappointing it feels) so I'd say keep tracking accurately for 6 months or so and then maybe try your GP. Mine didn't take me seriously at all even with 10 cycles of data so be prepared for that!

Sanch1 · 24/09/2015 12:12

Ok thanks, I guess I'll see over the next couple days if it stays high? Today is CD21. I did have a spike early in my cycle CD10 ish but it went right back down again.

It was probably less than 6 days as I have positive OPK saturday, so ov sunday and AF Friday, 5 days really I guess? I'm hoping it was a one off freak but as that was the first time I've used them I dont know.

I figured I'll temp til Christmas and if LP is still short I'll go in Jan and we'll then have done 10 months. Although my LP can't have been that short to concieve #1, can they change?

flymo79 · 24/09/2015 13:07

hi sanch I've been charting with the glow app and just looked up over my past five cycles, it reckons I have an 8 day luteal phase and a 20 day follicular phase. But I don't think I've actually had a positive opk since beginning to chart my temps... I suppose I might be missing it due to the time of day I get around to testing on any given day in my fertile phase. Am therefore focussing on the temping and seeing what the app does. we are ttc#2 as well (didn't fall as quickly as you with number 1! but am keeping positive and hoping 2ndary infertility hasn't become an issue). 6 days would be quite short, but you'll never know if anything has changed since #1 as you weren't doing all the 'science' then, so I'd just make sure you dtd as much as possible in the week or so that you think you might be fertile...
Oh, and last cycle I took B-vits as self-diagnosed slp BUT a word of warning! my temp rise didn't happen til cd 24 last month, so I had a cycle of 30 days and a 6 day LP... not good! I think it actually delayed ov instead of lengthening my LP, so have knocked on the head this cycle, and am just taking folic acid and vit c.

anyway, ramble over!!

mrsmugoo · 24/09/2015 13:32

A pregnancy totally reboots your reproductive system so whatever your cycles were doing on dc1, it may well be completely different now.

I know I conceived my son on cd13 when my ovulation has been around day 18/19/20 now!

sunshinegirl12 · 24/09/2015 17:26

Flymo, the B vits seemed to do the same with me, delayed my ov but AF still arrived at same time so just gave me a shorter luteal phase.

I'm just off to buy my pineapple now... x

mascaraisamust · 24/09/2015 20:56

Well got a temp rise of a degree and a half. Maybe I ovulated?! Will dtd tonight just in case...maybe I haven't, hey ho!

Ah ladies we will all get there! Keep sharing your tips! I'm sipping pineapple juice (not from concentrate with my breaky).

Opk is pretty non existent now.

Sanch that's good going with #1! Fingers crossed #2 will be on the horizon soon for you.

Mrs I'm investing in the CB opks next month, sick of trying to interpret these cheapy ones!

OP posts:
Sanch1 · 25/09/2015 09:16

A degree and a half is a pretty steep rise mascara!

Mine's gone down again this morning, so day 22 and still no ov and no sign of a positive OPK. Feeling deflated and its only been 6 or so months, can't imagine how you ladies that have been going longer feel. And I already have one so I should be grateful.

That's interesting about the B vits flymo and sunshine, I'll have to see what happens in the next couple months. I need to ovulate first! Last month my cycle was 25 days, and I ov'd day 20 (according to OPK, no temping to cant be sure). Raaah its all so confusing!

mrsmugoo · 25/09/2015 11:27

Yes I really recommend the CB digi OPKs - they are pricey but they give you flashing smilies when you are in your fertile window and solid smiley face when you are just about to ovulate so we usually try eod on the dashing days then dtd on the day of the flashing smiley and the day after. I don't think you can time it any better then that - the rest is up to nature!

mascaraisamust · 25/09/2015 18:51

Gosh I'm tired this evening! It's been a busy old day!

OP posts:
mascaraisamust · 25/09/2015 18:53

Sanch I know how you feel with the lack of ovulation! I say go to your docs and get day 21 bloods, I did that at 6 months, now going on for 10 and my gynae appointment is Oct. Get in the system. Can't hurt x

OP posts:
mascaraisamust · 25/09/2015 18:54

Mrs I've only used the CB ones and they were great, just costly! Well needs must...

How is everyone today?

I'm just back from reflexology, was so lovely and relaxing. My therapist said for best results should try to book in every 10 days to 2 weeks while we get everything in balance, but i've seen alot online saying it should be avoided during 2ww, although she only said to avoid in the first trimester so to let her know soon as I get my BFP. Now i'm confused. x

Sunshinegirl2015 · 26/09/2015 20:21

Oh I didn't know that sunshine.

I've been away from mumsnet for a few days as trying not to obsess this month. Going well so far. Still taking bbt but couldn't even tell you what cycle day I'm on. Think I have about a week until expected ovulation.

Got the results of my scan and am being referred for a second scan to see if the fluid in my pelvis is still there or whether it's been absorbed by my body. Apparently there was a lot of fluid but everything else looked fine.

mascara so did you ovulate or you're not sure?

Sanch1 · 26/09/2015 22:17

Busy day here. Still no ov, no positive OPK. Been to the docs mascara, he said I'm still settling down from the pill, chill out, temp for a few months. Come back if not pregnant after the 12 months. Very frustrating! Am trying to relax a bit more this month would you believe! Haven't been obsessed with dtd every other day like last, after all,all the 'experts' say just relax and it'll happen.

mascaraisamust · 26/09/2015 23:21

Sunshine I'm thinking I haven't ovualted this cycle and I've run out of OPKs now so I'm stuck. Written this month off now tbh. It's 4 weeks today since the mc. No sign of AF yet. Been an emotional wreck today though!

Sunshine my ultrasound before TTC said I had lots of fluid around my ovaries too but this was shrugged off and never investigated. The GP said they could repeat the ultrasound but it never happened and I never knew what the consequences of it were so I'll be interested to hear what they say.

Sanch, yes im sure it's true, relax and it'll happen. Now I've got to remember how to relax... Last time I relaxed it did happen!

OP posts:
sunshinegirl12 · 27/09/2015 09:28

Sunshine & Sanch, thats good that you aren't obsessing too much this month. I'm completely the opposite at the mo but if this isn't my month think I'm going to try to put it to the back of my mind and concentrate on planning xmas / hols for next year etc.

Hope you're feeling a bit better today Mascara x

mascaraisamust · 27/09/2015 11:31

Sunshine I like your style. I've also said that if this isn't my month I'm going to enjoy the run up to xmas with the festivities rather than take it all too seriously in especially in Nov/Dec.

Ordered my CB OPKs so they should come tomorrow. Temps are down again at 35.92.

I'm feeling better today thanks. I think now I've taken the pressure off myself this month by admitting defeat that it's most probably not going to happen I'm not as anxious to ensure everything is perfectly timed. Been truly wined and dined this weekend and it's my birthday soon too.

Got my GP appointment Wednesday and my private consultstion has been moved until the week after now.
