" Finbarr Saunders and his Double Entendres"

OP posts:
NomDePlume · 31/07/2006 16:34

You can't have meant my DH, he has a name that is very much of it's time. I have never met a person under the age of 15 (even when I was 15) with the name. Can't imagine a modern baby with it.

N.B. - DH is NOT called Gary, I think that one has to be one of the worst, along with Wayne for dating terribly.

DumbledoresGirl · 31/07/2006 16:52

I ditto MJC re not thinking Finn is "thin". I did when my Finbar was first born and would call him Fat Finn (not that he was!) but that association soon fades. I think it is the same with many names - once you have used them for a bit you forget what you first thought of them.

Clary · 31/07/2006 17:05

MB I am always quoting that truly-scrumptious thing to people when talkign about mad names.
(I say "a friend of mine...", sorry to take your name in vain )

singersgirl do you mean possession?

Clary · 31/07/2006 17:11

oh ok read thread now.
Finbar does make me think of Viz, like Cod, but I think we're just showing our age here.
nice non twatty name really
Suspect my children's names a bit twatty (not ds3 actually, in top 100 as we were runnign out of twatty ideas) but I don't care. DS1 says he likes his name as "there are no other XXXs in the school." bless him.

Well I used to get weird looks in waitrose when I called after dd when she was small.
Her name is Rose and I'd have to stop myself shouting "wait Rose!" and shout instead "Rose wait!"
But would often end up hollering both numerous times till i sounded completely deranged.
When I did it in sainsburys it sounded even weirder.lol

stleger · 31/07/2006 17:54

Finbarr was patron saint of Cork where I live. It is sometimes shortened to Barry. My boss has a brother called Finbarr who is both rich and handsome!

ocd · 31/07/2006 18:26

adn its a REALLy sexty name for an adult man imo

OP posts:
MrsJohnCusack · 31/07/2006 18:48

ah
I know your DH's name then I think dino
I know a few nice men with that name too

I think Finn and Finbar are very lovely names but then I know lovely people called them. names are so affected by who you know called that

DD's name is beautiful. but people do look at me askance when I say it, as I say, don't care! it's unusual but it's a perfectly valid name and we have very good reasons for choosing it

goodness only knows what on earth we'll call this baby though...especially if it's a boy, I find boy's names very hard

ocd · 31/07/2006 18:48

ok so so far you haev a what?

OP posts:
fullmoonfiend · 31/07/2006 18:51

Finn was our top choice for ds2, love it (Finn McCool!) but as he was such a porker when he was born, we decided not to - purely cos of the Fat Finn bit . The irony is he is waif-er thin...he would have been nicked-named skinny-finny I'm sure. Wish we'd stuck with it, as I said in a previous post, his name is becoming the sort of name bellowed in the fruit-shoot and sausage rolls aisle now. (it means Fair warrior though )

PMSL at you ggirl!!!!

I have a DD called Isolda.

I love Finn for a boy, but know quite a few baby Finns. Hmmm - Finn and Isolda sound lovely together though....

I like William but there are loads of them being born to friends/acquaintances at the mo. is a very strong family name on both sides

fullmoonfiend · 31/07/2006 19:23

Love Isolda, (and Isolde) very pretty! As long as you resist the temptation to call your son Tristan!

KTeePee · 31/07/2006 19:26

stleger are you from North Cork be any chance, village beginning with a "D"? (Just thinking this because of your MN name...)

MrsJohnCusack · 31/07/2006 19:27

oh god no! and she's banned from ever going out with a Tristan, I can tell you - imagine the jokes!

KTeePee · 31/07/2006 19:27

And I heard someone shouting out "Phoenix" the other day - think it was a girl, though I would have thought more suitable for a boy?

MrsJohnCusack · 31/07/2006 19:30

the name might have been FeeKnicks

thing is I can totally understand why people want to pick unusual names - I did it myself. so I am making a resolution to try not to be rude about name choices, whatever I privately think, because it is pretty horrid when people are v.rude about your choice (has happened to me a couple of times recently - once from someone who used to be a very good friend who I'd lost touch with - I was on our first meeting in years when she said 'oh god what did you call her that for - the poor kid')

Xena · 31/07/2006 19:32

DumbledoresGirl DH wanted to call DS2 finbar, but higher up his list was rafferty and merlin.
DS1 goes to school with 2 Dempseys and one of them has a brother called cash

fisil · 31/07/2006 19:46

I thought (fleetingly) about the Finn/Thin thing, but actually ds1's name is never shortened to Finn anyway.

TBH I've taught many kids called Fathi (pronounced Fatty) and never thought twice about it, regardless of their size.

DumbledoresGirl · 31/07/2006 20:25

Xena, funny thing is, although I never considered them myself, I like Rafferty and Merlin too. Might call some cats those names now that I think about it.... (cos there will be no more children)

Xena · 31/07/2006 20:30

I liked finbar best but I childmind a boy called fin so I thought it would get complecated
