Advice re OPK please-very early smiley face

StrawberryMojito · 02/06/2013 09:49

This is my second month using an OPK (clearblue digital that tells you when you are both high and peak fertility). Last month I didn't get a high fertility sign at all (flashing smiley face), it just went straight to peak fertility (fixed smiley face). This was on day 12 which was a couple of days earlier than expected but still seemed normal.

I only finished my period a couple of days ago but started using the opk straight away as my cycles vary a bit (26-30 days). Today (day 8) I got a high fertlity sign. Surely this is too early?

So, we had sex last night just for fun rather than baby making but now I'm thinking should we do it again tonight as I got the high (but not peak) fertility sign or shall we just start doing it every other day until I get the peak fertility smiley face. I don't want to exhaust DH and his swimmers but don't want to miss the window either.

Kabgab, I had 5 flashing smilies before my fixed albeit earlier in my cycle. I turned to this thread as I was frustrated with repeated flashers but it turns out its very common and you will get a solid eventually. Good luck

kabgab · 16/08/2013 02:14

Tea - many thanks for your note. It is frustrating...my cycles are irregular so I was told to start the OPK on CD19 after my scan..first day was the blank O, then followed by 6 mornings of that flasher smile. Fingers crossed tomorrow morning brings the solid. Good luck to you too :)

kabgab · 16/08/2013 14:28

Well, AF showed up today...CD26. I'm also guessing I must not have ovulated this cycle based on the OPK status. I'm trying to look at the upside, by telling myself at least I'm not being dragged through a super long cycle and can try again soon. Fingers crossed for next time I suppose.

Tea1Sugar · 17/08/2013 16:02

Sorry Af turned up, lots of luck for next time.

How's everyone else doing? The thread has gone quiet!

I've got my first scan on 2nd sept, I'll only be 6+4 but gp suggested establishing just how many beans are in there. Both my parents are twins and dp's dad is a triplet. I just hope I make it that far. I'm knicker checking all the time.

blueamber · 17/08/2013 16:38

Kab, sorry AF turned up. Maybe the opk measured the rise in oestrogen that happens before you get AF. It could have missed ovulation earlier on. So perhaps you did ovulate, but the lh surge wasn't strong enough for the opk. This can happen.

Tea, good luck with your 2nd scan, I'm sure things will be ok.

Well my body is showing signs that ov is coming closer, but i don't know how long it will take. Hopefully not long! I'm on cd13 now.

kabgab · 17/08/2013 22:54

Thanks Tea & blue...Tea, best of luck with your scan...and blue, that's great that you can sense ov coming..that's good news.

BNmum · 18/08/2013 13:57

Hi ladies! My computer packed up so I've been offline for awhile. Just catching up on all the gossip.....

MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS TEA!!! Grin

BNmum · 18/08/2013 14:25

Phew! Right I think I'm now up to date with all the news.

Welcome to the newbies!

I was nail biting at one point tea but I'm so happy that your dp came through and realised he was being an arse. Great news that you have a date for your scan already, especially as theres soo many multiples on both sides of the family. I also have my 2nd scan around that time.

I think the clearblue advanced give you a lot more warning than other OPKs so would be the best tests to use when doing IUI business. It's just a pain in the backside that the instructions and so poor and misleading that you have to waste money 'testing' them out first and almost rewriting the instructions yourself. The expense is the only downside I can see in them now I know how they work.

Fingers crossed ov is just around the corner blue

I hope the preseed works its magic for you ladies!

How's things strawbs, charley, bambi and charlie? Have I missed anyone?

I'm in that awkward stage that means that i look like I've eaten too many pies and I'm just fat not pregnant. I suppose that's a good thing as we still haven't told any family or friends our news. The nausea is still here too.

Tea1Sugar · 18/08/2013 16:28

Thanks BN Grin only 4+3 fgs it's dragging! Yeh dp has swamped me with flowers and has apologised profusely for his reaction, but he's excited about "Barney or Wilma" hmm!

How are you getting on?

blueamber · 19/08/2013 08:30

Glad you're both doing well, BNmum and tea. Tea, I hope these are not the names he has settled on Smile. Bnmum, hope your nausea is going down soon.

How is everybody else doing?

I'm on a flashing smiley today, so the OPK is matching up with what I had noticed myself. I have 4 sticks left and after that I'll be getting no more. Too expensive and I can do it myself!

charleylarlie · 19/08/2013 08:42

Good to see you back, BNmum!

Hi everybody else. Welcome kab!

The last few days have been a bit of a roller coaster for me because of DP's new job and having to arrange a house move. We're currently looking for somewhere to rent until we can sell our house. Anyhoo, we've decided not to ttc this month and see where we are next month. Am currently on cd10 and getting ewcm so will prob ov over the next few days (not that it matters this month, but good to know it's all seemingly in working order!). Will prob be back on the ttc bus next month, but am still here, cheering you all on for the sidelines for now! Will catch up with all your news from here on in. Smile

cancun00 · 19/08/2013 11:54

Hi ladies I'm new to this thread. Been keeping up with you all and praying for you all. It's been a difficult 9 months of trying to conceive for me. Love the way you all support each other. It's so disheartening at times especially after the long two week wait is over unsuccessfully.
I'm on cd14 and after five days of flashing smilies I finally got my solid smiley this morning. Had 7 miscarriages plus ectopic In The past 10 years. So hoping this is my month but have sort of given up hope will be turning 40 in march which doesn't help. Dtd last night this morning will hopefully dtd tonight and tomorrow too. Wish me luck.

charleylarlie · 19/08/2013 15:31

Welcome cancun. Sounds like you've had a rough time, but hopefully it will happen for you soon. How long have you been using the opks?

Hopefully you'll get your fixed before you run out, Blue. I have 3 left, which isn't really enough for next month. I'm hoping I know my body a bit better now though so won't need them. Haven't been temping this month as have had too many things to think about without an early morning wake up, but will get back to it once we've moved house.

BNmum · 19/08/2013 19:35

Welcome cancun and good luck! Sorry to hear of your losses. It sounds like you've been through a lot over the years and yet you still remain positive and keep trying, I admire your determination and hope you don't have too long to wait.

Is it wrong that I actually quite like barney? Blush Sounds like dp is making a good effort to make it up to you tea. I think it hits all of them at one point or another so better to get it out the way early on. Are you suffering from any sickness?

Great that the 2 are in sync blue and it sounds like you won't have too long to wait fr your fixed Smile

It sounds like you have a lot on your plate at the minute charley. What kind of timescales are you looking at to move? Renting is a good idea, it should take the pressure off a bit and give you time to make sure you're happy with the area etc. Scary but exciting!

StrawberryMojito · 19/08/2013 20:00

Hi everyone,

welcome Kabgab and Cancun. Kabgab (can I call you kebab instead, it's easier to type!), good luck with the fertility specialist, how old are you if you don't mind me asking? Do you think it has made a big difference (age). Cancun, it sounds like you have had an awful time of it, my heart goes out to you. I really hope that this is your month.

We dtd last night but just for kicks. Sorry for tmi but it was the best sex we've had in ages, probably because we were doing it because we wanted to and not because we 'had' to. I think my fertile window starts in a couple of days, I think I'm going to start the OPKs tomorrow. I've got 5 left and I'm trying to avoid having to buy another packet...

Tea...wow...you could be having multiples, how exciting!

Nice to see you BN, glad you are back online.

Good luck everyone.

Charley I've been using one step opks past 8 months decided to switch to digi clear blue after reading this thread. Had 1 day plain circle then 5 days flashing smiley and finally this morning got my solid smiley. Dtd last night and this morning dh working tonight so will dtd am.
How many days after solid do you think we should dtd?
I always without fail get ov pains but nothing as yet although I got solid smiley this morning. Does solid smiley mean I have ovulated or will be ovulating soon?

kabgab · 20/08/2013 00:23

Hi Strawberry....Lol, how about just call me Kab. Anyway, I conceived at age 37 and delivered my daughter June 2012. We've been TTC # 2 for almost 10 months now (give or take), and because I'm beyond age 35, I am in the care of my Fertility specialist (I recently turned 39).... Anyway, I can't say if age has made a big difference or not (re: trying > age 35 versus in your 20s, because I wasn't actively trying in my 20s or earlier 30s)..what I can say is good news, is that I'm healthy and there is no medical reason why I can't have another baby...it's just frustrating and a bit scary when you slip into the "almost year of trying" bracket, and your next birthday is the big 4-0! I think as women, we tend to put pressure on ourselves too with respect to age, and that doesn't help..our bodies don't respond well to stress.

Today is my CD4, and I'm take 5mg of Femara until CD7...this cycle they are also having me perform a trigger shot of Ovidrel (to encourage Ovulation) when my follicle(s) reach around 20mm...going for a scan on CD11... Fingers crossed....it's been quite a mess these past 10 months with irregularity and mid-cycle bleedings, etc... Hope this is different...Not sure if I will dabble in OPKs, they tend to stress me out more than anything else...I think I'd prefer to just DTD every other day for a couple weeks to cover the "window"..?

How are you? I hope everyone else is having great luck & the pregnant posters are feeling great and excited...xx

businessadmin · 20/08/2013 02:04

Hi BNmum x I prefer to use Asda own brand from now on, it give me a better reading and not a misleading like the clearblue advanced.

I ave my follow up consultation on Thursday, so i see wat happens next x

Tea1Sugar · 20/08/2013 07:54

Charley - hope the move goes well!

Welcome and good luck to the newbies!

Strawbs - glad to hear. It's so easy to get into mechanical ttc sex, who knows that time might have done it!

Bless dp, he's slept on the sofa past two nights as he has man flu and is worried about me getting poorly. I won't lie, it's been lush having the bed to myself! I've had an on/off mild ache on my pubic bone, should I be concerned?

BNmum · 20/08/2013 07:55

It's nice to dtd just for fun strawbs, especially when its amazing and will hopefully put you both in the right kind of mood for the next couple of days (hopefully this also overlaps with your fertile period). Did you use preseed?

Congratulations on your solid cancun, if you can I would recommend dtd for the next 3 days, missing a day then one more for luck. The solid smiley suggests that ov will occur within the next 24-48 hrs. I think the adv sticks are more sensitive so don't be surprised if its more like 48hrs.

I think some of the fertility drugs can give misleading results with some opks so it may not be a bad thing to give them a miss Kab, especially if you think they may stress you out too. It sounds like the fert clinic are on the ball though and I've got my fingers crossed for you this cycle!

I hope it all goes well on Thursday business. At the end of the day, its whatever brand works best for you and doesn't break the bank. With the asda brand ones I would think you would have to act immediately to hit your fertile window for IUI whereas with the adv you could wait for your fixed then get booked in knowing you have alittle bit more advanced warning (prob 24hrs) which would take the pressure off things alittle, hence the reason why I thought they would be more suited for IUI. I hope you don't have to wait too long for another try.

businessadmin · 20/08/2013 11:28

Ty BNmum x I find Asda better. With CB i went in wen i had the flashing smiley coz it was near the weekend and scared in case i got the solid on the weekend but it was too early. But with asda own as soon as the line is there or dark enugh i know im ovulating and can go in.

kabgab · 20/08/2013 21:02

Thanks BNmum! Hope all is well.

VJONES1985 · 20/08/2013 21:07

Haven't been on here for a while so just popping in to say hi to the newbies and see how everyone is doing. Pleased to see some of us have positive opks today. I've had three in a row now and just hoping it's an actual ovulation and not just a surge. Ewcm has bee plentiful but starting to dry up now.

charleylarlie · 21/08/2013 07:26

Yay for your solid smiley, Kancun! I never got on with the one step ones either - only ever got one positive and I was always forgetting about the no drinking for 3 or 4 hours before testing.

I agree about the stress we put purselves under as women, kabgab. We are our own worst enemies, I think. I think that opks can make that worse too sometimes.

How do the Asda brand opks work, Business? Do you still need to use fmu like the clearblue?

Hope dp's man flu is better soon, Tea. I can't remeber too much about early pg now, so don't know what symptoms I got so don't know about the pubic bone thing.
