Hello, all and welcome to this lovely space for our continued chats.

A bit of background for anyone not familiar with this topic:

The Nigel Slater Christmas Chronicles readalong usually takes place here between November and February each year (the Christmas Chronicles being a book written by Nigel Slater full of winter recipes and anecdotes) It's been running for a few years, and the contributors have collectively decided it would be nice to have it running all year round.

So here it is. It is a place to appreciate all things Nigel-esque. Think seasonal food and recipes, enjoyment of nature, gardening, appreciation of the weather, and sharing of news and small moments of joy. It's a calm, cosy space for gentle chat and merriment so pull up a deckchair, grab a drink and relax.

A very hearty welcome to friends new and old!

Just been lying in the bath listening to the church bells ringing.

Felt like the sort of thing Nigel would appreciate and felt a bit poignant as the town has been terribly badly hit by flooding from Storm Claudia.

It's locating me to a specific area by talking about it here. Around these 2 iconic food retailers are lots of little shops, cafes, deli, fabric shop, gift shops, independent pubs.

My house is fine as up a hill but we have an elderly relative staying with us for quite a while although they are taking ages to realise that its going to take longer that a week to get their flooded home sorted.

Another fussy eater to accommodate but time to regroup, take stock and rebuild.

Gosh, all those poor flooded home and business owners. I'm glad you are ok @HannahDefoesSpringFling , but I'm sending my sympathies to your relative.

LovesAutumnLeaves · 19/11/2025 09:54

Oh wow @HannahDefoesSpringFling that's awful. Yes, glad your home is out of it, but lots of love to those affected. I just can't imagine how it would feel xx

@HannahDefoesSpringFlingsending positive thoughts your way. Glad you and your relative are safe. X

EphemeraleEudemonia · 19/11/2025 21:26

Belated birthday greetings @CrushingOnRubies 🎂

@HannahDefoesSpringFling That is a very sad scene especially for the home and small business owners. Your poor local neighbors and relative, I hope they are able to deal with it all, but your relative is lucky in who they have for family in you.

HannahDefoesSpringFling · 19/11/2025 22:43

Thanks everyone. It’s been hard, especially for relative. All their furniture that had been in the water was carried out of house and dumped on pavement today.

I should say the assessor and helpers were all very kind.

Lots to think about in terms of things and their importance or lack of.

Waitrose won't be reopening until March. M&S (much, much smaller) is working flat out to reopen asap.
