Christmas time off. What do you get?

Just curious. Will you get a nice break off work over Christmas and new year? Do you have to use leave, is your break paid or unpaid?
I’ll be in Monday 23rd then we’re closed from the 24th through to the 6th. This is paid. I’m really looking forward to the break tbh it’s much needed. Office work here.

That's a bit rubbish, do they still charge the parents and not pay you?

I used to be a nurse and now I'm self employed. I'll never forget my worst Christmas, I worked Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year, 13 hour shifts, with a 2yo at home and was six months pregnant. And the ward had norovirus.

Six years with my own business and I still pinch myself that I get to choose my own time off. This year I'm having the same as schools and I can't bloody wait!

Just Christmas day and Boxing day here.

Bank hols only but I work part time so this year I'll get nearly a week.

We have a shutdown from Christmas Eve to 2nd Jan every year. I am extending it to finish on 19th this year. We’re pretty lucky, is classed as extra annual leave (that we don’t choose but nobody complains). Common in our industry (consulting)

I don’t get any time off, including the bank holidays. So I work all the way through, not including normal shift days off.

25th only. No annual leave allowed in December

No, parents aren't charged for that week.

Work in a care home...
I have 25th off this year and working boxing day and then as normal. We only get to have either 25th or 26th off and 31st or 1st off. I actually quite fancied having boxing day off this year and work Christmas day as could go home and relax with family and not think I have to get up early the next day!

I work as Supply in schools so will be off with my children. Appreciate the time off in holiday although not paid.

I am off on the bank holidays only, I could use holiday and book some time off but the pace is so slow it’s a waste of my holiday to do this.

Closed between Christmas and New Year but have to work the rest or take holiday. I'm working to 24th then off to New Year.

We only get 25th and 26th off. It is voluntary to work them. Having said that though, I have 19th-29th off using a mix of annual leave days, off days (due to working weekends I get week days off) and part-time off days. It's the longest Christmas break I've had for 13 years so I will enjoy it!

Leave is not permitted during December where I work, so im working my usual shifts.

We get the time off between Christmas and New Year without it counting as annual leave. I've booked 23rd/24th and then 2/3 Jan as annual leave to give two full weeks off - hoping to take Fri 20th as flexi leave too.

This year both DH and I will be on mat/pat leave from mid-Dec, which will be really lovely. He's taking a full month so will go back sometime in January, depending on when baby arrives.

Usually though I save up a fair amount of leave to have at least 2 weeks off over Christmas. We aren't allowed to take leave in Sep & Oct due to flagship events, and I get a decent allowance, so usually have more than enough to take a decent break over Christmas, when the office is dead anyway. Last year I was off from the 10th Dec and went back on the 3rd Jan.

NHS , I am actually off this Christmas. Normally work every other.
But am working 4 x 12.5 hour shifts up to Christmas Day.

NHS ward based so no leave over the two weeks. We work as normal. i’m off christmas day but working boxing day and christmas eve. Off new year’s day. But working the days around them. i work four days. I just arrange things for my days off.

It is what it is. i do get jealous of people that have time off but i’ve done it for twenty years. i book a week off in december and some days in january when everyone is back at work to decompress.

We close the offices between Xmas and New Year but it has to come out of our annual leave. I'm off from Friday 20th, back on Friday 3rd Jan (because 2nd is a bank holiday here too).

When i worked in a nursery it didn’t close. Only the bank holidays we were closed. So we were all back in work. At least we got to choose when to take our four weeks holiday a year ourselves!

I was he same when I worked in a private nursery, now that I work in a LA nursery we do get a longer break which is lovely!

This year our office is closed 23 Dec until 2 Jan. It's the longest time they've done this and we were all a bit surprised. We used to only get the bank holidays plus an extra day, but they decided to close for extra days during the first covid christmas and then have carried on. If you want extra time it comes out of your annual leave.

Christmas day, boxing day and the Friday here this year. Back in the Saturday.

My department are getting christmas day and new years day off this year, keeping very quiet about it at work as we're the only department off. I only work 4 days a week so will have some other days but no idea which ones yet. It's a hotel.

We always have 3 closure days along with the 3 bank holidays so always get a nice chunk of time off over Christmas, even with no personal AL use.

I'm also lucky that in the team I have worked in for the last 5 years, I'm one of few people who want to book time off in the surrounding period (probably because there is less pressure with everybody guaranteed a Christmas break) so I use a small number of days to ensure I have pretty much all of the kids Christmas break off.

Another advantage is it's usually quite quiet around the Christmas break anyway due to the academic break.
