Just curious. Will you get a nice break off work over Christmas and new year? Do you have to use leave, is your break paid or unpaid?
I’ll be in Monday 23rd then we’re closed from the 24th through to the 6th. This is paid. I’m really looking forward to the break tbh it’s much needed. Office work here.

We close the offices between Xmas and New Year but it has to come out of our annual leave. I'm off from Friday 20th, back on Friday 3rd Jan (because 2nd is a bank holiday here too).

I think it's really bad to force people to use their AL so they can make the decision to close the offices!

Dutchhouse14 · 27/11/2024 11:05

Our office closes for the 3 days between Xmas and new year so we get these days paid as extra days to our annual leave. Anything else we need to book.

MiddleAgedDread · 27/11/2024 11:07

@SilverDoe it was first done on the basis that it wasn't worth having to have someone in to open up all the offices for only a handful of people to be in......but since we all managed to work from home throughout lockdown and only 2 admin people in our office of over 200 are based in the office fulltime, everyone else does hybrid, it does feel like a bit of a dead argument these days!! It does tend to be pretty quiet though and I guess some people would be chancers and claim to be working whilst having very little to do because their colleagues and clients are all on leave. But if you don't want the time off and have tasks to get on with that could be very efficient use of time!

CrushingOnRubies · 27/11/2024 11:09

Break up on 20/12 go back 4/1. Might pop in one day in the second week when it's quiet to check emails and catch up on bits.

socks1107 · 27/11/2024 11:10

Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
My NHS role doesn't work on bank holidays but my colleague has young children so I'll take the hit as many others have done for me in previous years and let him enjoy being home.
I doubt I'll have many audits booked that week so likely spend it catching up on my admin which won't be too bad

holjam · 27/11/2024 11:12

I hold some holidays back each year for this so finishing mid day on 19th this year and returning on Jan 2nd.

TheCanterburyWails · 27/11/2024 11:15

I'm currently a student, so I've got two weeks off. In other jobs I've had anywhere between a full week off from Christmas Eve (either a half or full day) and back in early January, to being back in on Boxing Day. The jobs I've had in the public sector typically have had less time off.

LeftyLou · 27/11/2024 11:21

Working half day 24th then off until 30th which I am working but then off again from 31st until 6th Jan. Only using 3.5 days AL. So yeah very good time off 😊

ThatsNotMyTeen · 27/11/2024 11:23

Finish on 23 Dec

Back on 3 Jan

Get 25, 26 and 1 and BH and the rest is annual leave.

Battlerope · 27/11/2024 11:24

Higher education. Closed 24th to the 3rd.

I’m off for a month using a mix of bank holidays and annual leave.

Itiswhatitis80 · 27/11/2024 11:28

Break up 20th until 2 jan,I work as a cleaner in a nursery,we have to use our own annual leave.

reluctantbrit · 27/11/2024 13:28

Taking annual leave is highly unusual for me, I work for an investment bank in loan processing, it's the busiest time of the year for us.

I think the last time I had annual leave was 18 years ago when my dad died and I refused to have my mum alone over Christmas.

I work until lunchtime on the 24th and just because the 27th is a Friday and my non-working day I am off until the 30th and work until lunchtime 31st (or whenever the last loan booking of the year has been released).

We take turns in taking time of before Christmas and beginning of the year.

Ted27 · 27/11/2024 13:30

Foster carer- no time off

Blarn · 27/11/2024 13:35

Civil service, bank holidays only or put in an annual leave request. We used to get one extra day paid but that was removed when the coalition government came in.

islamann · 27/11/2024 13:40

Clinic nurse. Working til 6pm on Xmas Eve, off Xmas day and Boxing Day as clinic is shut. We reopen Fri 27th but I don't work Fridays, so I'll have 5 days off in total. Again in work til 6pm NYE, back in on 2nd.

Did ward work for years, including some years on nights over the whole festive period so I know how lucky I am.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 27/11/2024 13:46

NHS here, so not much. I've got a few days off here and there, but all either AL or because I've worked another time, ie, I'm working 2 saturday and a full weekend on call in december, so I get 1 day off each week instead of those, that comes in handy at getting christmas prep done, but leaves DH looking after the kids on his own and leaves us with not a lot of family time. I am off christmas eve, but as one of the days owed to me. I'm also working and on call on boxing day. Got the 1st and second off, and then back to work.

TheDefiant · 27/11/2024 13:48

Sole employee for a small org. Part time. My last day is 20th Dec my first day back is 7 Jan. I don't work Mondays. Have taken 48 hours annual leave to cover.

However as sole employee I'll be making sure our website and social media are ticking over the whole time and I often have to reply to distressing messages via social media at this time of year.

So I'm off but never 100% off.

Linnet · 27/11/2024 14:01

I finish on the 20th and go back on the 7th. We get the 25th,26th,31st,1st and 2nd as public holidays the other closed days we take as annual leave if they're days we work.

Loobylu66 · 27/11/2024 15:17

I work for local government so just get the bank holidays off plus use some of my annual leave, so off from 23rd December and return on 6th January.

Hoplolly · 27/11/2024 15:19

Half day on Xmas Eve and NYE, the rest I have to use annual leave.

bengalcat · 27/11/2024 15:29

NHS - off Christmas Day

PurBal · 27/11/2024 15:52

@Oreyt term time only staff at my school get the same, independent. I'm year round though so working Christmas Eve and back on 2nd. Have to take annual between Christmas and New Year.

popandchoc · 27/11/2024 16:16

I don't work friday's, have booked the 23rd and 24th off and then we get until the 2nd off so i will have just under 2 weeks off. Might need to check emails though and am an emergency contact.

HuaShan · 27/11/2024 16:27

NHS Manager, off Christmas Day and Boxing Day, back in on 28th. Pretty pleased with that compared to many years!

Dontcallmescarface · 27/11/2024 16:28

We shut down on Friday 20th and go back on the 2nd. Those dates are automatically taken from our A/L allowance.
