Just curious. Will you get a nice break off work over Christmas and new year? Do you have to use leave, is your break paid or unpaid?
I’ll be in Monday 23rd then we’re closed from the 24th through to the 6th. This is paid. I’m really looking forward to the break tbh it’s much needed. Office work here.

Just Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day as standard. Any other days are booked from normal leave.

stanleypops66 · 27/11/2024 16:51

I work TTO (not in schools) and follow my dd school calendar, but I also work 3 days a week. I finish half day on 19th dec and don't go back until 8th jan.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 27/11/2024 16:58

This year I'm lucky, I get Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing day off. In exchange I'm working all over the New Year though (retail). I'm taking early retirement next year and can't WAIT to have the whole of the time off and to be able to plan Christmas with more than a few weeks' notice.

skyeisthelimit · 27/11/2024 17:02

Im self employed. Due to my work, I work every single day from 2 Jan to 7 Feb without a break, so I always take the week off between Christmas and New Year. I will officially shut the office until 6 Jan though, so if I work the 2 + 3 Jan, I will get a lot more done if clients think I am not working.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 27/11/2024 17:03

I'm off from the 18th until the 2nd, but I might book the 2nd off as I don't work Fridays.

It comes out of my annual leave allowance even though we are closed.

WhitegreeNcandle · 27/11/2024 17:08

None. Farmer.

we will do only the essentials on Xmas day,
Boxing Day and New Year’s Day and the paperwork can take a running jump till January though!

MajorCarolDanvers · 27/11/2024 17:22

We close between Xmas and Hogmanay and the time is gifted.

With additional annual leave I will have 3 weeks off

BurntBroccoli · 27/11/2024 18:38

One of the very few perks of my underpaid job is that we get paid leave for the days between Christmas and new year.

annonymousse · 27/11/2024 18:42

I have had 25 years of working a 24/7 kind of job and have worked on Christmas Day often in that time.

I retired this year and I'm so looking forward to just knowing I will be at home for all Christmas forever and ever from now on.

It's not just working the holiday, it's the stress waiting for the rota to come out and see what you've got and then the guilt if you're off when you know your colleague was desperate for it.

But now I'm freeee 🙌🙌

BurntBroccoli · 27/11/2024 18:46

Tumbleweed101 · 27/11/2024 07:23

We’re closed from Christmas Eve until 2nd Jan. Have to use our holiday allowance to cover it.

Work in a nursery.

That seems unfair?
Means you can't choose when to take a good proportion of your annual leave. I bet they are still charging parents too!

Xmasbaby11 · 27/11/2024 18:58

I work at a university. This year we have 5 (paid) closure days, so with the 3 bank hols as well, it's quite a good deal. I usually take 2-2.5 weeks off .

jay55 · 27/11/2024 18:59

Off unpaid (contractor) from 14th to the second.
It's fairly usual for me to have to take extended time off over Xmas, I'm really happy about it.

Nottodaygoaway · 27/11/2024 19:13

My leave is allocated and I work shifts. There are five "periods" of leave and we are assigned a different one each year, and it follows a pattern. (Are you with me so far?). I can swap say, my allocated leave in Period 1 for someone's leave in Period 3, if both agree. Swapping Christmas week is impossible though.

I get a week of leave in Winter but for 4 years it's not Christmas week and one year it is.

If I'm not on the leave period with a Christmas week I only get Christmas Day off. Then I have my normal rostered days off.

This year is Christmas Week year so I've got seven days off, the previous Sunday to the following Saturday.

I've had a run of luck because my rostered days off fall on NYE and NYD this time.

It's quite complicated if not used to it.

Teachymummy · 27/11/2024 20:17

Im in a school so 20th Dec to 6 jan!

Wrapunzel · 27/11/2024 20:39

We normally have the three working days between Boxing Day and NYD as bonus days in my company but this year they've given us two whole weeks, such a nice gesture. Means I'm off exactly the same time as the kids Smile

HippyChickMama · 27/11/2024 20:41

Higher education, we close on the 20th until 3rd of January and don't use leave for that but I've booked extra so I finish on the 19th and go back on the 6th. I worked in the NHS until 6 years ago and worked many Christmas Day shifts, including nights, so I'm grateful every year that I no longer have to do it!

TheChosenTwo · 27/11/2024 20:45

We close early on Christmas Day and get the time off between Christmas and new years as extra time off. I’ve booked the Monday and Tuesday off because we host for a lot at Christmas so wanted a bit of time to sort things out and I’ve booked the Thursday and Friday off after new year as we’re on holiday. So I will have 2 weeks off but 4
days of that is me taking leave.

Soccermumamir · 27/11/2024 20:46

We both get 2 weeks off paid. Work term-time. Break up Thursday 19th December 🙂

Jabtastic · 27/11/2024 20:52

I'm getting/ taking 2.5 weeks this year. I work part-time employed and part-time self-employed. I'm always really ready for the Christmas holidays plus we travel a lot to visit family and friends.

Oddsquadnumber1 · 27/11/2024 20:53

Same as you Op, working the Monday then two weeks off. Using annual leave. In my last job the business closed for two weeks and we didn't have to use leave, was the best part of the job!

Soccermumamir · 27/11/2024 20:54

PrioritisePleasure24 · 27/11/2024 09:25

When i worked in a nursery it didn’t close. Only the bank holidays we were closed. So we were all back in work. At least we got to choose when to take our four weeks holiday a year ourselves!

Same when I worked in a nursery. We got Xmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day off. That was it as the nursery was open. We only had like 6 children in across the setting on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve as well.

Pizzalife · 27/11/2024 21:24

I work for a university so am off for the full two weeks and don't need to take any leave as the days the university is closed around the bank holidays is on top of our annual leave allowance.

Edited to add as others mention it: this is paid

Petdoctor · 27/11/2024 21:37

On call Christmas Day, off Boxing Day.
Working daytime Friday, Sat (am), Sun (am), Mon, Tuesday between Christmas and New year and also on call overnight for all except the Tuesday night. Then off for 5 days. Part of a 1:3 rolling rota which works well.
Generally nights on call aren’t busy

RuthW · 27/11/2024 22:05

25th, 26th and 1st

Tumbleweed101 · 28/11/2024 07:52

We lose Xmas week and bank holidays so we don’t get much choice with A/L. I find it frustrating and is probably the thing I find hardest about working in my current work place.

Parents aren’t charged for that week though and we are paid holiday pay.

I think it originally started (before I worked there) because so many staff had their own young children and few children came in anyway.
