Thread 11 - the one where I’m nostalgic for a cinnamon bum kit

Reastie · 13/11/2024 15:09

Thanks @Beautifulsunflowers for the title. It was close between that and E.L.F on a shelf and some others - too many to choose from!

Greetings and welcome one and all to a friendly and joyful corner of mn - the Christmas bargain thread. Here, we share Christmas present purchases, ideas, links and discount codes, with the aim to spread the Christmas magic and joy and reduce the financial stress.

It's a very busy thread, so see the tips below for helping everything run smoothly and avoiding repetitions of Cookiegate etc al. It's a lovely, friendly bunch and I'm so grateful to each and every one of you for building such a warm, fuzzy and generous spot on mn. I know I've save so much over the years and am so grateful to all of you for sharing.

Pull up a sleigh and relax with a mulled wine and mince pie, for Christmas has nearly arrived!

@ me if you need anything or you want to let me know anything - the thread moves so fast I can't always keep up so this really helps

A few pointers to make everyone’s life easier and the thread be as useful as possible:

  • It’s handy to put in bold the bargains so they’re easy to spot
  • No affiliate links
  • No need to place mark or post messages of hello or thanks at the start of a new thread - use the ‘watch thread’ button
  • Be nice or leave

The current referral thread for sharing referral codes https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/christmas/4940918-4940918-bargain-referrals-thread-6 . Please use this rather than this page to share referral links to make the sharing fair.

To make clicks links, you set it up like this only without any spaces apart from between the website and the word(s) you’re writing: www.bargainsahoyeveryonecomehere.co.uk

Thanks @RainbowZebraWarrior for the instructions below.
To make something bold, put this star * either side of the word you want to bold (with no spaces in between)

So starhellostar would look like this.

hello

Obviously use the * not the word star

Some of the below is copied and pasted from previous years, so do @ me if the links don't work

Hoping someone can help. In the secret Santa draw, I got my lovely niece but I'm totally stuck! She’s early 20s, isn’t into makeup, doesn’t buy any new clothes, all second hand or upcycled (she’s very handy with a sewing machine), not much of a drinker either so all my go to ideas are useless! Any ideas? Budget is £60.

How about a selection of good sewing things that might upgrade what she has already? Good scissors, glass headed pins, frixion pen, some beautiful buttons, gutterman thread etc?

How about a craft kit like Artful (£50 but they've sent out emails to people on their mailing list for £10 boxes a couple of weeks in a row).
Or Wool and The Gang, knitting kits with everything included, patterns, tools and wool. You get to customise colours so you are choosing something she wear too.

Sculpt does lovely air dry clay, but also canvas painting kits that are around that price and come with tutorial videos.

Ahhhsorry I thought you meant a tasting set that was £8 withshipping. Must read more carefully 😃

TheGirlWhoLived · 17/11/2024 10:13

@Ardagusdubh I’d definitely go for stationery, she sounds quite ‘vintage’ so possibly would like a Parker pen or similar fountain pen or perhaps a calligraphy set!

TheGirlWhoLived · 17/11/2024 10:14

if she’s into sewing then maybe some good fabric would be fun, something unusual or even a crochet starter kit which is very in

Does anyone know where/how I could get the Wednesday Lego set from cheaper please- it's £45 on the website.

Thanks!

Qwerty21 · 17/11/2024 10:29

Anyone seen any discounts on jellycats? I'm looking for the ginger fuddlewuddle. Thanks

IlovePond · 17/11/2024 10:30

@Vimaybe - in store at the Futon Company, (it’s not available online), they had a lovely stoneware teapot for £6 reduced for BF. It looked much more expensive than its original price of £16.

Might be worth popping in if you have one near you.

AsparagusGirl · 17/11/2024 10:31

Any chance anybody could give me some very specific instructions on which Lidl sol de janeiro dupes are good (I have heard some are bad) - i.e. what they are actually called (I believe a number?) My auntie wants to get my DD9 a token gift along with some cash for xmas so thought this might work for an older lady who's not the best at internet shopping.

IlovePond · 17/11/2024 10:35

@AsparagusGirl - smell is very subjective, so it’s hard for me to say, (I heartily dislike some of the authentic SDJ sprays myself, particularly the one that smells like food 🤢).

However, I bought the no68 Brazilian Crush one in Lidl yesterday - it’s pink - and I really like it.

On a related note:

Are your DD and her friends really into ‘brands’? Seems like a ridiculous thing to ask about a 9yo, but it’s a whole new world🙀.

If so, she might not appreciate a dupe and in that case, you might be better getting your relative a small gift from Claire’s to give to your DD.

Lifeisart · 17/11/2024 10:36

Thanks for the reassurance around Beauty Outlet. I hadn't heard of them before this thread.

BoilingHotand50something · 17/11/2024 10:40

@motheronthedancefloor I was looking at fashion books on Amazon and there were a few Taylor Swift ones. Some of them look quite cheap but there were 1 or 2 that looked quite classy. Not particularly bargains but might be worth popping in your basket and waiting for Black Friday if any catch your eye?

Is she a foodie? One of the spicery kits, a cuisinart gadget (was there a toasties thing?), a cookbook and hamper, a little air fryer, afternoon tea type vouchers/deliveries?

Thank you!
My DD isn't as into 'brands' as some others seem to be but likes to fit in. She has some superdrug perfume sprays from other years birthdays/xmas but we were out the other day and her friend was showing her all her SDJ (minis) + (bigger) dupes so I think it's pretty ok at the moment to not go for 100% brands!

It is a whole new world, I was probably just discovering Impulse age 9 and 99p for a body spray was a treat 😂

MissStilton · 17/11/2024 11:04

@Ardagusdubh , I’d be wary of choosing sewing notions or haberdashery for her if you’re not sure what she already has, especially as she seems to be interested in avoiding waste: if she prefers pattern weights or finer-gauge pins, for example, she might not use glass-headed ones, and guterman thread is excellent quality, but I would only buy it to match fabric I already had and even then prefer Scanfil on cottons so my garments are biodegradable. If you can find out what pattern designers she favours, you might be able to get a newly released pattern, if you were sure it was a style she liked, but a pattern book might give more choices. If you can describe her style, I might be able to suggest one.

Amazing 2 for £7 book deal on Amazon for kids books. I was looking for When I met Father Christmas and it's over £7 on it's own. I got that and another book my daughter likes both for £7 total. Each individually over £7. Pretty good selection on there too. Lots of Christmas books, Julia Donaldson, Wimpy, Dogman etc

These ones both smell wonderful and very close to the real thing. They also last on the skin and don’t sour.

The pink one (78) is a dupe for SDJ 68, and the orange one (72) is a dupe for SDJ 62.

Treaclemoon (Tesco and boots) also do a good dupe shower gel and it’s popular with teens.

🙀thanks @fishfingersandchipsagain

@AsparagusGirl I have the pink Lidl 78, which is the dupe for SDJ68🙈
