80s Xmas tree

I have bought some colourful Xmas tree lights that remind me of my 80's childhood and it's inspired me to go all multicoloured and retro this year!

If anyone sees any other decorations anywhere please can you post them here.

Also if anyone has a time machine I'd a like a big metal tin full of the old recipe Quality Streets in the old colourful wrappers.

Oh this has just brought back a memory from when my brother and I were kids at Christmas. The foil lanterns!! I remember we had one hanging from the ceiling and it was above my Dad's chair where he would sit to watch TV. One evening it came unstuck and floated down and landed square on my Dad's head, folding itself back up on the top of his head. My Dad had a good sense of humour and just sat there with it on his head while my brother and I were just killing ourselves laughing. My mum came in from the kitchen to see what the noise was all about and started to laugh too. What a brilliant memory that I had completely forgotten until you mentioned the words 'foil lanterns'.

Thanks for that. 😂

Haha, that also reminds me of a really funny incident in a history lesson at school - the teacher got annoyed at us over something and was having a go at the class. When he’d finished, with perfect comic timing, one of the Christmas lantern decorations fell off the ceiling and landed on his desk. Completely ruined his lecture!

😂Those things were great. There was no warning they were going to fall and they just drifted down slowly which made it funnier. How much did you get told off for laughing. I assumed you all laughed! 😂

This is my 80s tree. Well less 80s and more "extra". We just add more tinsel and ornaments every year.

Love your toucan picture! Where's that from? (The Christmas tree is fab.)

DryBiscuit · 08/10/2024 16:27

I really want the ceiling decorations from the 80’s
I can smell them still and thats ‘the Christmas smell’

skyeisthelimit · 08/10/2024 17:05

My tree has always been a riot of colour and objects because I have what I want, I don't follow trends or fashion. I have tree ornaments from my childhood, and ornaments that I have collected for the past 25 years since I bought my first house.

I have a decoration for every year of DD's life, with the year on it, she is 16 now and I have ones that she made at school over the year and some that we made ourselves this year at a glass workshop.

We have decorations for things that me and DD love, like Friends, Stranger Things, Harry Potter.

It is a riot of colour and ornaments and we absolutely love it.

My brother was still putting up the tin foil ceiling decorations until a few years ago, he would love it if they were back in fashion Grin

DaveWatts · 08/10/2024 17:10

Thanks for these! Just what I've been looking for 😊

quantumbutterfly · 08/10/2024 17:14

I have decorations from places I've been, some of them are a bit random but lovely memories.

Love an 80s tree. Did anyone else used to have like a gauzey kind of floss on their tree. It's hard to explain it was like a fine sheet of floss my mum used to drape it over the tree when decorated made the lights look more twinkley.

Yes, we had it, mam called it angel hair. We had that, and lamenter. If you Google angel hair now, it brings uo lamenter though. My sister has our old tree decorations, including a 63 year old ballerina tree topper. She jas a huge tree, so it's all mixed in with new stuff - gorgeous.

Openmouthinsertfood · 08/10/2024 17:30

Ooh, I love this thread, really giving me the Christmas thrills! Xmas Grin So nice to hear of other people decorating like I do. Love seeing the pics of the old lights. The tree pic is lovely too.
Does anyone else still put tinsel on furniture? Like around the tv screen, on the edges of shelves, along the window sill, etc? Yes, I do. Xmas Grin

I found these on Amazon last year. I was very sad to take them down. Instant jollyness!

OMG those take me straight back!

There is a link further up the thread. Gettingstuffed posted it.

Yesss! Flower lights! Although they are LED so you don't get the full experience of burning your fingertips if you grab one when they're on!

They had it in the range last year.

We did and I actually think it looked lovely .Almost like a cobweb effect.

Sethera · 08/10/2024 18:56

Our tree in the 80s had a hotchpotch of decorations dating from the 1940s to the (then) present, with the flower lights mentioned on the thread - if one bulb blew, they all went out and it was trial and error replacing the right bulb.

The most modern thing on the tree was satin-covered balls - similar to this pic but ours had a wider range of colours including pastel pink.

Poundland usually sell those 80's style foil garland decorations that you hang

Zepper · 08/10/2024 19:13

We quite often lean into the colourful 80's tree look. I find it so much jollier than the ubiquitous coordinated gold/beige/whatever look. I always smile when I see a colour explosion 80's tree Grin

lazyarse123 · 08/10/2024 19:17

We were out today and happened to be looking at Christmas decs obviously and dh pointed out quite a stylish Santa with silver glittery clothes on and asked if I wanted it. Absolutely not it looked far too sophisticated for my liking I love everything to clash. I have been collecting decorations for nearly fifty years won't do to go posh now.

quantumbutterfly · 08/10/2024 19:18

I love seeing peoples' trees in the windows at Christmas, now when I see one with shedloads of tinsel & coloured lights I'll wonder if they're on this thread.

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 08/10/2024 19:21

I'm old ( well " ish").so l had a 60s and 70s Childhood Christmas.
Did my own 80s and 90s .
I remember the old coloured Christmas lights and wessel cups.
For years l did a multi mix of colours and baubles.
Now l do admit l have only gold silver and white.

WolfFoxHare · 08/10/2024 19:31

I’ve got a lot of colourful retro-ish decorations from John Lewis over the last couple of years. We have a flocked tree with colourful decs lights (sadly LED) in one room and a more traditional red and gold tree in the sitting room.

Thursdaygirl · 08/10/2024 19:32

This is reminding me of truly magical childhood Christmases, and Boney M’s “Mary’s Boy Child”, which I still love to this day!

Getonwitit · 08/10/2024 20:23

I still have one of these. I have a wooden one that i bought in Germany also.

That is truly a thing of pure joy, I'd sit and look at that tree all evening

PanettoneSoprano · 08/10/2024 21:11

Did anyone else have (similar to) these in the 90s?

We also had a TV deep enough to have a christmas village on top. Memories.
