80s Xmas tree

I have bought some colourful Xmas tree lights that remind me of my 80's childhood and it's inspired me to go all multicoloured and retro this year!

If anyone sees any other decorations anywhere please can you post them here.

Also if anyone has a time machine I'd a like a big metal tin full of the old recipe Quality Streets in the old colourful wrappers.

Just wanted to add my voice to say I've experienced a timeslip reading this thread! Feel all warm and fuzzy with Christmas memories - we went to Woolies at the start of December and me and my sister were allowed to choose a new decoration each to add to the collection- best day of the year!

WeAllHaveWings · 08/10/2024 21:41

My tree has been multi coloured lights for 30 odd years! Tree is 30 years old but lights have been replaced at least once..

None of your modern pinks, purples etc that just don't say Christmas to me, but the traditional green, red, yellow. There might be a blue but not the neon bright blue.

Decorations are a mishmash of 30 years worth of decorations which do a good job of hiding how thin the branches are now!

FeelingSad2024 · 08/10/2024 21:51

This has reminded me of some 1980s die-cut cardboard decorations my parents had. They were Victorian in style, edged with gold, a set of angels, a Santa carrying a tree, a baby Jesus in a manger... the reverence with which they were put on the tree by my sister and I every year... they were so beautiful and I absolutely loved them. I always said I wanted to inherit them for my own tree and my own DC.

Found out last year my mum had binned them as she changed the colour scheme of their tree! After some 35 years. I am still absolutely devastated. Many ebay searches have produced no fruit. Gutted.

Twistybranch · 08/10/2024 21:55

We always do an 80s tree:

1/ coloured lights
2/ chocolate angels/hanging decorations
3/lametta
4/ sometimes we snow flock it

redsplodge · 08/10/2024 22:08

Don't give up hope FeelingSad2024! These are the much adored lights from my childhood, no idea exactly how old they are, but the price on the box is in 'old' money Grin. A few years ago I used the last spare bulb and was struggling to find replacement ones, so I resorted to searching on ebay for a complete new set of these lights. One year I got outbid - was gutted! Anyhow, another set came up a year later & my eye-wateringly large bid was successful. I am now the proud owner of two sets.

So great to see others who love a colourful tree Smile

Thanks @ifIwerenotanandroid - my parents gave it to me for my birthday last year, I had to very carefully ship it back here overseas (live in Caribbean).

The artist is a lady called Katie Edgington, she's a friend of my mums, based in Horsham.

Her website is dreamsincolour.co.uk - she has some wonderful pieces!

Ooh, I love this thread, really giving me the Christmas thrills! Xmas Grin So nice to hear of other people decorating like I do. Love seeing the pics of the old lights. The tree pic is lovely too.
Does anyone else still put tinsel on furniture? Like around the tv screen, on the edges of shelves, along the window sill, etc? Yes, I do. Xmas Grin

Yes to tinsel everywhere! Love wrapping a big fluffy piece, snake-style around the stem of a standard lamp. All picture frames and mirrors get the tinsel treatment, too.

donttellthem · 08/10/2024 22:17

DH loves his 70s/80s tree filled with charity shop finds, we have a traditional one as well. But this is all kinds of wonderful

Thanks @Squidwitch - I regularly spend all evening looking at it rather than the TV.

It was even better when we had our indoor palms as I'd decorate those with these lights as well and it was magic..

SomethingBlues · 08/10/2024 22:23

@PanettoneSoprano yes! We had those!! And I think there’s still a handful going that haven’t fallen apart…

This is my 80s tree. Well less 80s and more "extra". We just add more tinsel and ornaments every year.

I love that tree!

WonderingWanda · 08/10/2024 22:24

Mine needs more coloured tinsel I think.

Love it - my Nan had the Pifco lantern lights in the 70’s - I was desperate to re-create the same tree and found the exact same lights on ebay - apparently sought after together with the cinderella carriage lights - I ended up paying £150 for the lights ! They do give me that lovely warm feeling of christmases with my lovely nan!

CrispieCake · 08/10/2024 22:55

I don't buy Quality Street anymore. The new ones are so very, very sad compared to the sweets of my childhood. My mother used to put them in little Christmas-tree shaped bowls around the house and the metallic paper would glint in the glow of the Christmas lights.

HeartshapedFox · 08/10/2024 23:07

Lovely thread, bringing up lovely memories! We had the Angel hair too.
I love seeing people’s Christmas trees with random decorations WAY more than boring matching coordinated ones. The stories and memories behind them all are just wonderful.

There is a hardware/sells everything independant shop that sells the foil decorations. I was well chuffed when I found them a couple of years ago.

NellyTimes · 09/10/2024 06:48

I bought some lovely multicoloured foil ceiling decorations from The Range a couple of years ago. They had them last year too, so hopefully they will have them this year too. I love them!

muddyford · 09/10/2024 06:50

I was given a bag of the new QS. Wrapped in paper. They tasted musty and I said something. The giver commented there had been a lot online about the issue. I won't be buying them again. I

My tree decorations are a mixture, going back to the 1960s, and I love them.

Ahhh the cinderella carriage lights! I remember them from my 80s Christmases. The bulbs were all blown by the time my DF passed away but I wish I'd salvaged them when we were clearing the house out. I did keep some foil concertina type ceiling decorations and several tree decorations though

We had some very similar to those! I loved them - all the little Victorian/Edwardian flower fairy style figures. Ours had a red edge.
Now I'm feeling soooo nostalgic and remembering watching things like Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, The Railway Children (and Poseidon/Towering Inferno...) whilst eating Quality Street😭

Tableglass · 09/10/2024 08:21

We have 2 trees-one classy and coordinated with crystal and silver baubles and white lights and one covered in colour, homemade and sentimental decorations. I love both tbh.

My absolute favourite childhood memory is coming downstairs in the run up to Christmas and seeing the coloured lights twinkling on the tree. Gave me such a comforting sort of thrill.

triggers34 · 09/10/2024 08:22

I work in a vintage shop and we have some original quality street tins for sale. If anyones interested dm me I'll get the owner to put them on her website.
