80s Xmas tree

I have bought some colourful Xmas tree lights that remind me of my 80's childhood and it's inspired me to go all multicoloured and retro this year!

If anyone sees any other decorations anywhere please can you post them here.

Also if anyone has a time machine I'd a like a big metal tin full of the old recipe Quality Streets in the old colourful wrappers.

Some of my favourite 80s baubles were homemade (not by me) for a school fair when we were living in the Middle East and there wasn’t much 🎄in the shops. Ping pong balls, entirely covered in glittery sequins, stuck on with ordinary pins. Exceedingly twinkly on the tree, but needless to say, not the sort of thing for the dog to start chewing if one falls off the tree!

Our dog wasn’t into 🎄decs though, not unless they were chocolate…

Re the lovely old coloured lights, I’m reminded of one of those ‘style police’ self-styled experts who wrote in a Christmas mag article about how to decorate your tree.
‘…and (always) white lights…’
Just in case any poor peasant-person wasn’t sure…😂

Blimey, this sounds just like my Christmas decs every year - except I didn't know I was being retro.

Nor me! My decorations go back into the 70’s.

mondaytosunday · 09/10/2024 11:28

I did retro last year. I bought used 70s/80s wrapping paper sheets off eBay/etsy. I strung up those lights that had little plastic fluted shape around them. I still have a number of decs from back then anyway.
Amazon has a selection of retro baubles (like the ones with the indent).

Love an 80s tree. Did anyone else used to have like a gauzey kind of floss on their tree. It's hard to explain it was like a fine sheet of floss my mum used to drape it over the tree when decorated made the lights look more twinkley.

Try The Range. They sell gauze type fabric on a roll - red, white, pearlescent and silvery. It looks good covering shelves with coloured Christmas picks done like an arrangement with microlights threaded through. Good use of a shelf!

Iloveanicegarden · 09/10/2024 12:12

Have just read more of the posts. Can anyone else remember the Christmas lights that were actual shaped and painted faces - Santa, Punchinello etc. They had miniature screw in caps and thick green wire.? Tinsel was actually shredded metal and went rusty if kept. Peter Pan concertina banners and balls. Angel hair might not be available now as it was actually fibreglass. I'm 'old school' and absolutely adore glass decorations (from all over the world but best ones are from Europe) I have a considerable collection and they are all treated with reverence. Each has its own bubble wrap bag when it's time for them to go away

Poundland usually sell those 80's style foil garland decorations that you hang

And Wilkos, Home Bargains & B&M. They sell lametta for around a pound a pack as well, much cheaper than on Amazon.

I think colours generally are coming back into fashion - I hear you can once again buy coloured bathroom suites!

I bought a load of those foil garlands and hangers a few years back, and they make me feel SO nostalgic and happy about my childhood christmases. I love them.

Thanks @Squidwitch - I regularly spend all evening looking at it rather than the TV.

It was even better when we had our indoor palms as I'd decorate those with these lights as well and it was magic..

I think there is something very nostalgic and magical about pink and purple lights in particular, the one set I've got with purple in, reflecting off tinsel, is the most special

CaptainBenson · 12/10/2024 09:45

Oh wow!!! 😍😍😍

Thank you all so much for your replies. It's been a crazy week and I've not had chance to reply. Going to sit with a cup of tea and read through all the comments properly.

I've a couple of sets of colourful lights. I'll take a photo of them today and add it to the thread.

I'm very excited about a colourful retro looking Xmas. I love Xmas anyway, the tree is the highlight for me but usually mine is more traditional colours with warm white lights and I was hankering for a bit more nostalgia this year!

Did anyone else have (similar to) these in the 90s?

We also had a TV deep enough to have a christmas village on top. Memories.

I've still got about 4 of those left. They get a bit lost because they're tiny.
Loving al the happy memories on this thread.

CaptainBenson · 12/10/2024 15:35

I'll add a pic of the lights I bought. I'm not sure if I'll need more. 🤔

My tree usually is more traditional colours (red, green, gold white etc) but not on a strict thing. It also has other colours eg blue yellow etc, those little wooden painted ones someone posted, kids themed decorations, souvenir ones etc. But it's just not the mishmash of colour and colourful lights of my childhood.

I'm really looking forward to the warm pink, orange, green etc colourful lights of my childhood!

I love those quality street ones! I'm quite tempted.

We have had SO many sets of these lights, but they never last 😣They seem never to last more than a year or two. Our Christmas tree has always been an 80s extravaganza! Will Christmas decorations picked up from all over the world, and ones made by the kids as children. Not elegant, but putting it up is a trip down memory lane each year, and I LOVE it 😁

UpOnTheHousetop · 14/10/2024 07:04

I have the giant tin OP but sadly no chocs inside!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned retro cake decorations and cake ruffs yet. Ebay is your friend. 😊

@PanettoneSoprano nooooo! I expected chocolates but it was lights instead, it’s the disappointment of my nans tin of danish biscuits that was used as a sewing tin all over again. I still have an old quality street tin as well. Love the tree, love the colourful lights.

We had this on our tree when I was little. It was like cobwebs but pretty. It made the tree look magical. I was just talking to my mum about it today. I remember walking in to the living room after my parents had decorated the house while we were asleep. It looked so pretty.
