So what time tomorrow shall I hit the supermarkets?

Will it be heaving?

When are you going?

This morning we got to Marks and Spencer at 8.30, and Waitrose by 9.15. Both were fine - space to park and not too busy. Tomorrow one of us will nip to the local Tesco to pick up anything missing from our Tesco delivery at 8-9am.

JosieRay · 22/12/2023 21:36

Got to M & S at 6:15am this morning, (North East) opened at 6:00am queuing outside and inside. Queues to pay went halfway round the food hall. I couldn’t cope with all that queuing so headed to Tesco which was not busy at all.
Popped back into Tesco at 5pm this evening and it was quiet 🤷‍♀️
Just can’t predict it.

Thistooshallpass. · 22/12/2023 21:37

I went to Waitrose today at 5.45pm it was fine .. not bad at all . I think tea time is always quiet

HashtagShitShop · 22/12/2023 21:42

I'd go between now and 8am personally. I went today after a tesco delivery to collect what they didn't have/unsuitable subs at 10am. It was horrendous with no trollies and that was whilst a large amount of people were still at work/school. Cars couldn't get in or out and I ended up waiting over 40 mins for a taxi (juggling two apps to see which would release one first). The Tesco man told me that as he left the big store at 8am, it was already at least a 20 min wait to get out the carpark.

WimbyAce · 22/12/2023 21:42

I reckon most people will be there early so no way doing that, plus I need my sleep! Just gonna brave normal mid morning time and see what happens.

GreenLight23 · 22/12/2023 21:50

Last Christmas I got to my local supermarket at 7am thinking it would be the best time to go and there was a camera crew filming live for the local news. A few people I know spotted me on tv as they did a close-up of me putting my shopping on the conveyor belt. Hope they’re not there tomorrow!

Brawsome · 22/12/2023 22:00

I went today around 4pm. Aldi and Morrisons. Both very quiet yet all tills open. And shelves full too. Both said it had been a nightmare earlier on. Take a chance…

RedToothBrush · 22/12/2023 22:08

Set your alarm for 4.30am.
It'll be a breeze cos no one else is stupid enough to do it at 5am.

Ykn · 22/12/2023 22:09

Waitrose at 9pm was generally quiet other than in the reduced aisle which was quite literally swarmed with bargain hunters forming a mob around the poor staff marking down the items. Tbf, there was quite a lot of good stuff still well in date, mainly the likes of party food and fresh cream.

OhRightyThen · 22/12/2023 22:25

I arrived at opening time at Aldi last year on the 23rd. I thought I was smart but there was a queue down the side of the building in the car park when I arrived 😧 it was like supermarket sweep with people chucking anything and everything in their trolleys. Carnage by the time I left. Never again!

kayla12345 · 22/12/2023 22:31

I'd be going tomorrow evening about 9pm. Made the mistake of going to Sainsbury's earlier and it was chaos!!

SummerSazz · 22/12/2023 22:41

I'll go Xmas eve. Always quiet then and you get the advantage of many yellow stickers.

RedVanMan · 22/12/2023 22:42

6am

DGHZ · 22/12/2023 22:46

Oh my goodness just go now! I went today and wow 😳 Never been in that situation before in my life. The actual shop wasn’t that bad, it was the carpark and the roads in. Traffic wasn’t moving at all and everyone was just jumping out their cars because they’d sat so long. It took us hours and hours just to go to two food shops. Would have taken half an hour usually! Best of luck

Needhelpsupport · 22/12/2023 22:46

I went to Sainsbury’s about 2pm and it was rammed . Got most of the shop .
Went to M&S at 6pm ish and it was really not too bad and well stocked .Got everything I needed .

TheUsualChaos · 22/12/2023 22:46

We went this evening about 6.30pm and it was fine, busier than usual but certainly not chaotic. But by that time tomorrow it's likely a lot things you might want will be sold out. So I would say it needs to be very early tomorrow morning or just make do with what you have 😆 good luck!

reluctantbrit · 22/12/2023 22:51

Waitrose at 9.30am was fine, plenty of parking space but definitely busier than on a normal Friday morning (my normal shopping day).

When we left at 10.15, it was heaving, queues for parking spaces and it definitely got busier inside as well.

Our local high street is just a short walk away and there is 2 hour free parking at Waitrose so that also impacted the car park.

I know that in the last years we often go togehter and DH stays in the car waiting for a spot while I rush through the store to get our shopping.

Jmaho · 22/12/2023 22:55

@WimbyAce exactly what I'm planning to do. I went ridiculously early last year and it was manic queuing to get into the car park of a huge Tesco. Having to drive round and round then having to reverse park into a tiny space with an audience. Took me a good few hours to shop then I went passed again at about 11 and it was much quieter
Plus I've got a late night tomorrow as tons of wrapping to do so I'm not getting up mega early as no chance of a day nap with over exciting kids around!
I'll just go when I'm up and can be arsed and face whatever I face. It'll get done. It always does!

Goldenphoenix · 22/12/2023 23:07

Went to M&S this evening at 9.30pm. Blissfully quiet! Parked next to the shop and got most things I needed. Some things out of stock but nothing I was that bothered about. I advocate going late not early tbh.

Dynamoat · 22/12/2023 23:14

I'm going at 6 with headphones and an audiobook so I can drown out Brian asking his wife what variety of potatoes they need 100 times.

I may also fix dagger bits on my trolly wheels like in Grease to plough through the aisle stoppers.

Felisenavedad · 22/12/2023 23:15

Our Tesco was busy today at 1.30pm. Our Waitrose was OK at 3.30pm, busy but not heaving.

Still plenty of stock in both places too.

Tomorrow will be the big day as its Saturday and fresh veg etc will be good for Xmas. I'd go at opening and then enjoy the rest of the day!

sheeplikessleep · 22/12/2023 23:21

DH is going at 6am tomorrow.
He does it every year and says OK at that time.
But he wakes around that time anyway.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 22/12/2023 23:25

We went at around 5pm tonight to both tesco and asda, they weren't busy but looked like a tornado had hit. Checkout operator in Tesco said it had been heaving all day and had just quietened down but it was the first time it had been busy. Expect Saturday to be bonkers.

Thecatspjymas · 22/12/2023 23:28

I went to both Waitrose and Sainsbury's today, both big stores and both absolutely fine this was 5pm so maybe I missed the hoards

bunniesandguineapigs · 22/12/2023 23:31

I was in M&S for 8.45 this morning - the car park wasn't too bad, and neither were the tills, but no trolleys and getting round the shop was a mare, so many people just dithering about amd seeming to have no idea what they'd gone in for. Quite a lot of gaps on the shelves too. I got exasperated in the end with not being able to just beeline for what I needed, so I grabbed a few things and left. Morrisons was fine about 12ish, and I've just come back from Big Tesco which was an empty delight!
