So what time tomorrow shall I hit the supermarkets?

Will it be heaving?

When are you going?

So the "little asda" was remarkably quiet just now but doesn't have all the bits I need.

Lots of turkey!!

We’ve been this evening. We were only going to pick up an Argos order but it wasn’t heaving, so we ended up getting all but a couple of bits which DH will pick up tomorrow.

If you’re going very early, it might be worth bearing in mind that not all branches will have staff on the checkouts from 6am so you might end up having to self scan if you don’t do the scan and shop. I’m sure lots of branches will, but some definitely won’t.

I actually think the later at night the better

I came on to say the same thing.

Also, smaller local shops e.g. Tesco Express are well stocked and nowhere near as busy as the supermarkets. Here, anyway.

Pineapplewaves · 22/12/2023 20:09

I was at Tesco at 10 am this morning and the car park was full. The isles with the fresh food in them, bakery and alcohol isles were very busy, other isles quiet. There was a long queue at all the check outs too. I'd get there early.

I don't know why but everything in my Tesco had really short dates with everything expiring on 25/26 December, people weren't happy.

Sodapop1 · 22/12/2023 20:10

If you can and have a big 24 hour supermarket near you I would go now!

janfebmarchapril · 22/12/2023 20:13

I went to m&s at 11.30ish and jr was hell. Went to Tescos around 2 and it was fine but was heaving when I was leaving. So depends where but I'd go as early as possibly. My mum always used to go at midnight but I couldn't I'd be too tired

yikesanotherbooboo · 22/12/2023 20:13

I went mid afternoon and it was busy because every had big trolleys full of the weeks groceries but there weren't any queues or disagreements. As always there were a few shortages of less popular products and the ongoing mustard shortage. Staff were working hard and being really generywith their time .

yikesanotherbooboo · 22/12/2023 20:13

Generous!

NotSorryForTheReality · 22/12/2023 20:19

I would say the later the better, however I’m guilty of turning up at the busiest times but as long as I know what I need I power through (the speed walk between each isle I need to go to 😂) and accept my fate at check out and it’s never as bad as it seems…May the gods be with you either way 😂x

DeathMetalMum · 22/12/2023 20:21

Several of the large supermarkets today ran out of carrier bags near me. I'd be aiming for 6.30, or half and hour to an hour after the shops open.

DramaAlpaca · 22/12/2023 20:24

I'm heading in shortly as I'm not a morning person. Wish me luck!

NameChangeToday80 · 22/12/2023 20:27

We've been to Kingston, Walton, and Hersham today (Fenwicks, M&S Food, Waitrose) though parking was tricky, none of the shops were any more than "Saturday busy". So it may depend where you live.

NancyJoan · 22/12/2023 20:27

Just had my Tesco shop delivered. Masses of stuff unavailable(as expected), so going to M&S early in the morning to stock up. Am going to the city centre one, not the out of town, which will be hellish. Will be there for 7:30 ish.

I work in a supermarket and I'd say either as early as possible or late as possible. It was absolutely horrendous today. I'm also in tomorrow 🥲

ChocolateCinderToffee · 22/12/2023 20:32

What surprised me today in Sainsbury’s was the number of people wandering around aimlessly. There were clearly whole families on an outing. Personally, I had a list and was in and out in 15 minutes.

Nw22 · 22/12/2023 20:35

I just waited an hour for waitrose click and collext. It was insane. Go early

Sorrynotsore · 22/12/2023 20:36

I'd go at 6am if I was going tomorrow for a big shop. Or for extras (where you don't need certain things) late on like post 8pm. I'll be doing the later tomorrow.

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 22/12/2023 20:36

We went on Wednesday afternoon (1:30ish) for our big shop and again this morning (around 10) for a top up. Wednesday was heaving, constantly having to wait for people to get out of the way, but nothing missing that we were looking for. Today was a lot quieter, just felt like normal weekend levels of people, and again we found everything we were looking for.

Now just waiting for someone to discover something vital that we missed off our lists!

soupmaker · 22/12/2023 20:38

I did the big shop with DD1 today. Took 45 minutes in our local Aldi. Was busy but not mental. Then we went to Waitrose, it was like the end of days in the car park and not much better inside. Thankfully we were only getting a few things there. Spotted a £135 turkey in someone's trolley. Still, I spent £75 on fancy bits! Good luck to you all tomorrow.

Baircasolly · 22/12/2023 20:39

I went 7.45 this morning and it was fairly quiet, but the car park was getting very full by the time I left at about 8.30.

It's always a gamble though. I'd expect the 23rd to be the busiest day, especially as it's a Saturday, but apparently today was forecast to be the busiest day on the roads, so maybe most people will have already done their shopping now? Who knows?!!

TortolaParadise · 22/12/2023 20:42

Serene135 · 22/12/2023 19:18

As early as you can. I went today and it was awful. Picture this:

  • Car park full to the brim and cars swerving around me narrowly missing my car as they panicked to get a space
  • Trolleys all gone so I had to trek around the car park to find one
  • People snatching and grabbing while others pushed past (on occasion ramming a trolley into my back)
  • Families wandering around, some with two trolleys overflowing with stuff
  • Huge queues (and I mean huge)

I got there around 10:30am.

I got out of there as fast as I could 😂

Sounds like shopping during 😟lockdown!

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 22/12/2023 20:46

I work in a supermarket, it was heaving today from early until I left at 1pm. I went back in at 7pm this evening to do my own shopping and it was lovely, just 2-3 people in each aisle. The only thing not available that was earlier was the fresh instore bakery bread. I would recommend waiting until as late as possible. I'll be back there at 9am tomorrow when I'm expecting it to heaving again.

Mirabai · 22/12/2023 20:47

Surely this is the point of Christmas delivery slots? Mine arrived today.
