TEMU Bargains

Any chance we can have a thread on TEMU items? I keep seeing items I know my (by Xmas) 8 year old girl would adore. So far bits and bobs we have had from there have been good - more luggage and summer based items so far. Have been looking at all the jewellery and bedroom organisers, night lights, etc. Would love to see anyone else’s finds! Also thinking that the whilst deliver is about a week at the moment, this is likely to increase my Xmas.

please no comments about human rights/ slave labour etc. the likes of other Chinese based bargain website, Shein, Amazon, Primark will be no better 🙂

Apart from the dodgy products like piercing kits (wtf!) and extremely low prices is the any evidence of temu being dodgy. That is, is there anything concrete I can show to Dd that will dissuade her from purchases? P

@JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots Unfortunately it is behind a paywall, but the headline and a bit more can be read https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/22/business/economy/shein-temu-forced-labor-china.html

@JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots If you want a little more info, Temu, and some other companies are currently being investigated by a Select Committee in the US. This extract from the report explains why. (CCP is the Chinese Communist Party)

'On March 23, 2023, the Select Committee held a hearing on the CCP’s ongoing genocide of the Uyghur people and other minorities. The Committee received first-hand witness testimony and expert reports about the CCP’s atrocities, which include imprisonment, torture, rape, forced sterilization, and the widespread exploitation of the Uyghur people in forced labor. Following the hearing, the Committee unanimously adopted a Committee Report in which the Committee found that the CCP continues to commit atrocities against the Uyghur people and other minorities, including by exploiting Uyghur forced labor.1 The Committee Report also found that products made with Uyghur forced labor continue to contaminate global supply chains and to enter the United States despite prohibitions on such shipments, including the prohibitions and presumptions in the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) of 2021. Expert witnesses identified specific forced labor concerns in the retail apparel industry and with the supply chains of a number of Western and China-based companies.'

The Committee has released an interim report on Temu. They seem to have two main concerns

  1. By keeping the customer order limit below a certain value and posting direct to customers Temu are avoiding US customs checks and duties, unlike other retailers.
  2. Temu do nothing, other than asking their suppliers to self certify, to verify that they goods they sell aren't made by slave labour.

Apologies all, I have now deleted the app after reading your comments especially the last poster.
Only problem is that lots of the items are on Amazon and they are identical, also made in China.
Will do lots of research now to find the products I need from a British or European supplier.
Consider me told and ashamed.

Urgh.

This idea that unless you are shearing your own sheep to produce wool to knit clothes you have no right to comment. That unless you are 100% ethical, then no critcism on people loading up on all manner of tat from China.

There is a huge difference between buying something in good faith from M&S, TK Maxx or another retailer and then finding out its provenance is dubious, and actively choosing to buy from Shein/Temu/AliExpress which everyone knows is tat made in sweatshops by enslaved people.

Tat from these Chinese wholesalers is disposable landfill. It can't be passed on to others because if it's clothes it will fall apart, and if it's toys it won't have any CE labelling and most people won't touch it with a bargepole.

The level of some people's need for mountains of tat "bargains" never ceases to both shock and sicken me. Fuck the planet, fuck human rights, fuck the climate. As long as your kiddy winkies have a mountain of presents to open, right?
