TEMU Bargains

MileyWiley · 13/08/2023 13:55

Any chance we can have a thread on TEMU items? I keep seeing items I know my (by Xmas) 8 year old girl would adore. So far bits and bobs we have had from there have been good - more luggage and summer based items so far. Have been looking at all the jewellery and bedroom organisers, night lights, etc. Would love to see anyone else’s finds! Also thinking that the whilst deliver is about a week at the moment, this is likely to increase my Xmas.

please no comments about human rights/ slave labour etc. the likes of other Chinese based bargain website, Shein, Amazon, Primark will be no better 🙂

Do consider that some things won't have passed the same safety standards applicable in the U.K. No CE marking or kite mark etc

NaughtPoppy · 13/08/2023 13:58

Are you really happy to give your child random crap made with no safety testing or adherence to British/EU standards though? I know it’s tempting because it’s cheap but you have no idea what chemicals she’ll be exposed to and dodgy electronics and batteries are dangerous, especially in a bedroom.

MileyWiley · 13/08/2023 14:03

I don’t see it as any different to Ali express, Wish or Shein. Items from the above are all regularly shared on the Bargain Thread especially as stocking fillers.

I love my bargin bits off TEMU for xmas

Scousemousey · 13/08/2023 14:06

Some of the items I'm seeing from temu look like strange phallic things, and odd headless animals.

MileyWiley · 13/08/2023 14:08

I’d love to read what you’ve purchased 🙂

My DH has ordered a couple of items from TEMU but they haven't arrived yet , he was aware the delivery time was huge . So something else to bear in mind if you're looking for Christmas things .

I saw an enamel pinbadge that I wanted for my DD (adult so sharps not a worry)
It was 84p <bargain> but add on the £8.80 p&p , less so .

Didn't order it .

But if you know all that stuff is probably unsafe, why buy it? Particularly for a child.

Florin · 13/08/2023 14:12

*wouldn’t wear them out!

Florin · 13/08/2023 14:13

All our stuff has come within 8 days with no charge for postage.

Florin · 13/08/2023 14:15

Should add I have found a lot of the stuff I have bought off Amazon on temu, exact packaging etc so just because you get it off Amazon doesn’t mean it isn’t the same stuff, it is just double the price on Amazon!

MileyWiley · 13/08/2023 14:18

This is my thoughts. Yes TEMU is likely to be unethical and not officially meet British standards, but it’s unlikely to be better than any other bargains from purely online retailers.

Got a fair few things off there in the past 4 weeks and all seem good to me just the same as eBay or Amazon I will be getting all my Xmas crafty bits off there this year

christmaspudding43 · 13/08/2023 14:29

The alternative to buying off Temu is not shein/Ali express/ebay/primark/amazon, it's not buying the shite at all or finding a similar product whose provenance you can trace.

It honestly makes me despair that people knowingly buy stuff made from slave labour and take the attitude that meh, other places sell it too.

SootspriteSearcher · 13/08/2023 14:37

I've bought loads of temu and been very impressed with the quality for the price. And tbh no different to things I've bought off amazon or ebay.

Some gems I've had -

  • pin badges (various themes and characters)
  • Demon slayer toiletry bag, figure and cookie cutters.
  • Taylor Swift toiletry bag.
  • Fake lego flowers.
  • A magic book cross body bag.
  • Various funky earrings including rubber duck ones!
  • Jibbitz for crocs - shrek ears, squishmallow, rubber ducks.
  • wireless ear pod headphones.
  • Christmas, harry potter & care bears dobble games.
  • inflatable hammers as a silly stocking filler!
  • Various sanrio merchandise.
  • Cute kawaii themed stationary.
  • Clip hanger thing for drying socks etc.
  • Nail art stickers.
  • Magnetic book marks.
  • Photo printer.
  • Heatless curlers.
  • Supernatural purse.
  • Fitness hoop.

My fails have been the decorations that looked 3d but were actually 2d perspex printed. Still cute for the price but not what I was expecting!

Florin · 13/08/2023 14:50

A lot of the stuff that is claimed to be handmade on etsy is actually temu/Ali express.

QueenCamilla · 13/08/2023 14:51

I'd be more worried about off-gassing plastics and other chemicals in all that stuff.

We had canteen spoons replaced at work with single use wood stirrers. The massive bag they come in say MADE IN CHINA in capitals. Plywood and other factory processed wood material is known to contain and leech a plethora of chemicals. I doubt the stirrers are carved out of an old oak tree felled in a grassy Chinese valley.
I refuse to soak them in my hot cup of tea and then drink that liquid....

I sniffed a dog chew toy straight out of packaging. Omg, nearly knocked me over - fumes like acetone. Poor dogs.

Even cheap fabrics contain untold amount of nasties. I remember there were some eye-opening results when cheap fabric face masks were tested during Covid.

If you don't care about child labour - maybe you care about your own children's health?

I don't manage to avoid all potentially dangerous tat but I do try.

Don't buy from any of them then?

Agreed.

You can protect the world your children will inherit by both not buying them disposable land fill destined shite now, and teaching them the value of money / that they can’t always get what they want.

Side benefit that children the same age as yours will be less likely to be working as slave labour in a factory to make this stuff.

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 13/08/2023 15:08

Do people just go through websites just looking for shite to buy ? I only go internet shopping if I need something . What a waste of money and time .

Twinklemacfinkle · 13/08/2023 22:27

I have ordered lots of arts and craft bits as I like scrapbooking. All of it has been fab.
I also have bought my daughter lots of pin badges to hang in her wall flag display thing ( descriptive I know).

OMG YES! This all the way! All this cheap rubbish, bought because of a momentary desire for it rather than any kind of need, made unsustainably at the very least, then shipped across the world, to end up in landfill! There’s just no need for it, and it makes me despair that so many people just don’t care about that, or slave labour, or child labour, as long as they can buy shit cheaply.

and breathe

tillytoodles1 · 13/08/2023 22:33

I've bought some tops and trousers from Shein. I've seen the same things on Amazon/Ebay for twice the price. Unless people stop wearing clothes altogether , the labour factories will continue. Almost everything is made abroad.

Do you ever think of the environment at all? Not you alone but imagine 8 billion people all buying this shite and then wonder why or planet is fucked.
