Most came down last night. The tree finally went today. I'm probably miserable but I can't bear going back to work and them still being up.

Do people really just lounge around eating and watching TV all the way to the new year and beyond,?

The kids do!

FourChimneys · 27/12/2022 20:27

Five or six days here is plenty for decorations although we put them up for the Solstice rather than Christmas. I love that feeling of a fresh start, tidy house and windowsills full of bulbs coming into flower.

Lesina · 27/12/2022 20:30

Mine will be done on 30th. Like to go into the new year with a clean clear and uncluttered house :)

Lorrymum · 27/12/2022 20:32

Mine went up on 16th November and won't come down until 12th night. Currently eating Quality Street and drinking a retro Babycham. Bliss!

Mrsfussypants1 · 27/12/2022 20:37

@NotAGrinchII Twixmas, the festivities between Christmas and new year. I picked that saying up from mumsnet many years ago.

catsonahottinroof · 27/12/2022 20:54

Why do people bother putting decorations up in the first place if they are such a nuisance?
Should people who only have Christmas day off only put their tree up for one day?

stargirl1701 · 27/12/2022 20:55

Yes, I do lounge around the entire 12 days of Christmas! No TV though.

Walk the dog, play board games, read books, listen to music, meet friends, watch Christmas films...all good lounging activities!

No work, no stress, no needing to be anywhere, no school, no after-school activities...just lounging!

mondaytosunday · 27/12/2022 20:55

I used to wait til the very last moment on Js airy 6 to take them down, but now I feel January 1 is a good time to do it. Ours goes up first weekend in December.
Also ours is a real tree and the council doesn't pick them up until January 9!

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 27/12/2022 21:09

I have a friend who is crazily in love with Christmas. All decorations and tree up on 1st of December.
She absolutely loves the build up to Christmas and always seems to have a wonderful Christmas.

The only reason she puts everything up , including very elaborate outdoor decorations, on the 1st is because her husband won't let her put it all up before then, which she would prefer.

She strips it all down on Boxing Day because she's fed up of it all !!!

ScarletWitchM · 27/12/2022 21:19

Take mine down properly on New Years Eve as I hate going into the new year with last year hanging around still. I have a massive clean up on NYE!
started taking down smaller decorations and cards etc today

MrsMontyD · 27/12/2022 21:42

I might take mine down tomorrow, I've been sorting through the decorations I didn't put up today ready to go into storage when the decs come down, this is a start on emptying the loft ready for moving.

honeyrider · 27/12/2022 21:45

Definitely not before January 6th since today is only the third day of Christmas. I left them up until the first week of February last year as did a lot of neighbours due to having something cheerful during lockdown curfews to look at.

I'll probably take them down after Nollaig na mBan - Women's Little Christmas on January 6th.

We like to keep a string of coloured lights over the fireplace mirror - our “January lights” nice to brighten up a dark morning or evening- but last year they became February lights too :)

I never understand this mentality, we must be the exception to the rule because we love our decorations, they go up mid November every year and we only take them down in the first week of January, this year it will be on the 7th.
We love having the house decorated for as long as possible and will be sad to take it all down.

pinkhousesarebest · 27/12/2022 22:21

Oh no! We are just getting started. No-one goes back to work/school or uni until the 4th and it's pyjamas until then!

illiterato · 27/12/2022 22:25

Tree has to go tomorrow as it’s shedding needles like crazy now but the rest I’ll keep until after New Year. All
comes down before kids go back to school though.

Youngatheart00 · 27/12/2022 22:36

Ours will come down on New Year’s Day or the 2nd I think. No interest in keeping them up past then, although it is nice to keep some ‘non Xmas’ sparkly / warm lighting to see through jan and feb

Krakenwakes · 27/12/2022 22:41

No, we’re just getting into the swing of Christmas. They’ll stay till 12th Night, and we keep some lights till Candlemas in February.

MissDollyMix · 27/12/2022 22:49

I do find it a bit strange to take down Christmas decorations on the second or third day of Christmas! But each to their own and all that. Because it is still Christmas, mine will be up until after new years, and then after that whenever is convenient between 2-5th jan.

LetsPlayShadowlands · 27/12/2022 22:58

Ours go up in the last week of November and stay until 5th Jan. I'm back in work on 3rd but DP and DD still off and at home so it's still her Christmas holidays. Will be nice to come home to the tree lights and the toys after a day in th3 office.

DD back to school on the 5th so I'll take them down that evening. She's really into the 12 daysof Christmas rhyme this year so we're sticking to that.

I've took them down on boxing day once pre kids and when I was in a bad head space. Have took them down for new year before. Past 6/7 years I've stuck to twelfth night. Hate being made to feel like it should all be put away, that it's untidy or I'm dragging out Christmas. It's still Christmas.

TheUsualChaos · 27/12/2022 23:06

I like keeping mine up until after new year sometimes until the 12th night but depends how it fits in with work days tbh as it takes ages to pack everything away. I'll take it all down just before schools go back this time. I'm back to work this week but it's still nice coming home to the pretty tree and things.
I've decided this year I'm going to keep some plain fairy lights up until the clocks go forwards to see us though the next few weeks of dark evenings.

Crazyinlove123 · 27/12/2022 23:11

i jumped out of bed this morning and got cracking taking the decorations down. Once Christmas day and boxing day is done I am ready for them to go away then and get the house back to normal. I have kept some little lights on a shelf as they look nice and haven’t tackled the outside lights yet. But nice to be clean and tidy inside. The kids still have the trees in their rooms.

Thinkwicebeforeyouleavemylife · 27/12/2022 23:28

Took mine down this morning. Feel much better now and ready for the new year :)

My birthday is at the start of Jan and I hate having it still up then since i think the Xmas period should stay in the old year if that makes sense

Each to their own though! Xx

Mine came down this afternoon. I do still have some to take down but I'LL get that done tomorrow.

I like to start new year with a clean and tidy house.
