Waitrose - no meat being delivered…..

I’m just fucked off and wanting a moan
Ordered a rib of beef from their Entertaining range months ago, to be delivered this evening as the Christmas meat. Got the email about what is being delivered and guess what? No beef! So no meat for Christmas Day, 10 people coming, a house to get clean and children to entertain and now have to try and find a joint of beef.

Also not being delivered - Christmas pudding, Yule log, cheese, booze…. Basically we have to now go and do a full shop. It’s fine, we can, DH is home and we can drive, we are lucky…..

If they’d even said sorry I wouldn’t mind, but the woman I spoke to in customer services was the rudest most dismissive person I think I’ve ever dealt with in a Customer Service context. I’m in a mood now and I don’t want to be, it’s Christmas!!!

That’s awful - Does remind me of ‘The Good Life’ for those old enough to remember - this happened to Margo who wailed “Harrods have cancelled Christmas” … Enjoy you Christmas.

Lozois99 · 24/12/2022 18:58

I went to Asda this morning and it was well stocked and not mental. Never bothering risking delivery again

Aldith · 24/12/2022 19:06

Preordered Turkey, Pigs in Blankets, Stuffing and Pannacotta from Marks which we picked up today and they had it all.

Went into Sainsburys yesterday and picked up most of what we needed. They didn’t have any lemons for the prawn cocktail sauce so we picked up a lime instead and we ended up getting harissa instead of sun dried tomato paste. I would rather go in if I can as someone who works in the shop picking orders wouldn’t automatically think to make those swaps.

DH worked as a night security guard at our local Asda whilst he was in his fourth year of university (Scotland). On Christmas Eve 2017 Asda was closing at 7pm so DH agreed to work 12pm-8pm. A woman walked in at 6.50pm looking for Turkey and saying she would write to head office as they had ruined her children’s Christmas as DH and the manager both tried to explain they had no Turkeys left 10 minutes before they closed.

I don't know whether those who go right to wire for xmas shopping have big balls or are daft . I know there are those who stand waiting to see if there will be Turkey's left to reduce . I couldn't do it myself . But it takes balls to wait .

Maybe they’re just not that fussed about the exact Christmas Dinner menu?

I mean, not everyone has their heart set on turkey with all the trimmings.

Although if someone would view the lack of a turkey as a major catastrophe, then I agree, daft to leave it to the last minute.

What do you want CS to do? If it’s not there it’s not there, they can’t magic it up. I imagine the CS person has had a very draining day of customers not listening.

You could say the same about 100s of threads on here.

I got caught out on this a few years ago. I was told at the time that if it wasn’t on the delivery or shop floor then they couldn’t help. I actually thought that by ordering it on their special Christmas ordering system I had bagsied my stuff but no it was purely the convenience of someone else grabbing it off the shelf for you. I’m sure it’s in the small print but they should make it clearer

Icantfindmykeys · 24/12/2022 19:44

Ocado delivered one item unavailable … so much better than Waitrose such a shame waitrose switched fulfilment companies.
I hope you got everything.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 24/12/2022 20:03

Tesco delivered yesterday, with the pre-ordered Christmas meat & poultry which had my name on each item - so they didn't come off the supermarket shelf. Same last year. Of the ordinary items, only a couple of subs that I didn't want. I hadn't asked for those items to be subbed, but I rather like the way they tried to make sure I had something over Christmas - sadly they failed because of allergies, so the subs got rejected. Overall, 10/10.

Missingpop · 24/12/2022 20:10

Oh heavens, I went into Waitrose yesterday to collect our fresh meat & it was pandemonium I spent almost 45 minutes waiting to be asked what I’d come to collect people around me were complaining loudly about how poorly organised it was; but the poor wee lassy who was going & collecting everyone’s orders from the cold storage looked totally overwhelmed.
Its the first time I’ve brought my turkey from Waitrose I usually buy from my local butcher but thought I’d have a change this year, next year definitely going back to my butcher, I brought all my other meat from him my brainwave back fire big time this year never again x

FancyFanny · 24/12/2022 20:59

Ocado were quite good- only 3 missing items from a £300 shop- wensleydale, leeks and 'biscuits for cheese'

PurpleButterflyWings · 24/12/2022 22:02

@silverclock222

Why don't people who are fit and able not go to the supermarket? Mind boggles....

This. Never heard such wackiness in my life. Hedging your whole Christmas (all the food and booze and EVERYTHING!) on one delivery a day before Christmas (and it is a day before if it's 8 at night, as you only then have Christmas Eve to get stuff, and MOST stuff will be gone!) Utter batshit.

The comment from a poster saying 'I don't understand people who go INTO SHOPS TO BUY STUFF' made me LOL. It's like a fucking parallel universe on here sometimes. YES do your weird 'Christmas in one big shop on 23-24 December' weirdness if you want, but don't cry off and complain when half of it goes wrong.

@bizzywiththefizzy

I don't know whether those who go right to wire for xmas shopping a) have big balls or b) are just daft. I know there are those who stand waiting to see if there will be Turkey's left to reduce. I couldn't do it myself.

I'm going to go for b.

Agree.

Usually Waitrose are good. I have had issues before with their entertainment stuff. Ordered well in advance but did not deliver. I got onto customer service and received a voucher as compensation.

Zoejj77 · 24/12/2022 23:28

I had similar with Waitrose. Ordered rib of beef to collect 23rd and then nearer the time I called to confirm and no order. Lucky had time to run in and pick one up

BooneyBeautiful · 24/12/2022 23:54

My DD collected her M & S order at lunchtime today. This is the third year running she has done this and she is always pleased with their food and the great service. My DP and I are having Christmas dinner at hers so I just placed my normal delivery with Asda (with a few Christmas bits) which arrived yesterday. A few bits missing/substituted, but nothing major.

CauliflowerBalti · 25/12/2022 00:22

My Sainsbury’s order was brilliant. Just limes unavailable. It was a Christmas miracle. I hope you got some beef sorted.

LoisLane66 · 25/12/2022 05:53

Both my Sainsbury's order (58 items) and Tesco order (53 items) were complete on delivery except for 1 item in each order. 2 bottles of Branston Fruity Sauce instead of 3 in Sainsbury order and 1 jar of Baxter's Pickled Onions in Tesco order. Both items out of stock and I never have substitutions. I ordered on 2nd Dec but amended both orders up to the night before. Everything was fresh and well within dates. I don't eat meat so that wasn't an issue. Both shops had plenty of cheese and dairy.
I can't understand why Waitrose failed to deliver the OP's meat as it was ordered well before any 'Christmas Entertaining' deadline. That's quite shocking.
They should have informed her. If you keep checking your order it shows the order limits on certain items and anything out of stock.
Tesco had a limit of 2 when ordering evaporated milk but on 21st that limit was lifted when they got more stock so I added another tin.

LoisLane66 · 25/12/2022 05:55

Both orders delivered on 23rd.

KatherineJaneway · 25/12/2022 07:59

Waitrose delivered, only item missing and not substituted was eggs. However I picked up last minute bits in tesco to see a woman buying over 50 eggs. That's a lot of Yorkshires or cakes!

JMR185 · 25/12/2022 09:07

I had several items missing from Ocado, not a problem as too poorly with Covid to entertain. Must say customer services were lovely and helpful and allowed me to cancel items. I could have cancelled the entire order if I had wished. An issue would have been the large dessert I had not cancelled as freezable, but it was unavailable and no substitution offered. Going to need to rethink my ordering strategy for next year.

PrimoPiatti · 25/12/2022 09:48

Gave up on Waitrose around ten years ago. Their prices until then were justified by the excellence of their CS. The CS was eroded bit by bit until the whole edifice collapsed. Concomitantly JL went sour too, so they now see a tiny fraction of our money.

Stewball01 · 27/12/2022 15:42

That's awful. I've never ordered. I'd been scared of use-by-dates. I hope you get everything you need. Regarding the girl in the complaints dept., I'd put in a very heavy complaint. Happy New Year.
