Waitrose - no meat being delivered…..

I’m just fucked off and wanting a moan
Ordered a rib of beef from their Entertaining range months ago, to be delivered this evening as the Christmas meat. Got the email about what is being delivered and guess what? No beef! So no meat for Christmas Day, 10 people coming, a house to get clean and children to entertain and now have to try and find a joint of beef.

Also not being delivered - Christmas pudding, Yule log, cheese, booze…. Basically we have to now go and do a full shop. It’s fine, we can, DH is home and we can drive, we are lucky…..

If they’d even said sorry I wouldn’t mind, but the woman I spoke to in customer services was the rudest most dismissive person I think I’ve ever dealt with in a Customer Service context. I’m in a mood now and I don’t want to be, it’s Christmas!!!

Why don't people who are fit and able not go to the supermarket? And who needs 60 eggs? Mind boggles....

@FlamingoSocks Waitrose delivers from your local store apart from the entertainment order. Not like Ocado with a central warehouse.

Why have they run out of cheese and Xmas puddings? My local store was heaving with it all yesterday and everything bar one small item was in my order collected today.

I had an email from them around 2 weeks ago saying that all turkey orders were being fulfilled (because there is shortage with bird flu) but I was thinking of Plan B until I heard that.

This isn't always the case - most London orders come from the huge warehouses on the periphery set up when Waitrose was partnered with Ocado - both mine and the OP 's order came from the huge warehouse in Coulsdon which services retty well all the south London deliveries. The difference between my experience with Entertaining orders not being fulfilled this year and last suggests to me that last year it was a very unusual occurence and that its pretty common this year.

FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall · 23/12/2022 17:50

I did two orders - just to be on the safe side so had an Ocado and a Waitrose delivered last night. Each was fully present and correct. Very impressive.

Because we're busy doing other stuff? Also one Waitrose van delivering loads of orders is more eco friendly than lots of individual trips (in cars) to the supermarket?

bizzywiththefizzy · 23/12/2022 17:52

This is why I pick up stuff from when it arrives early in-store . The Jacobs issue (strike) I was well aware of so made sure to grab them when we saw them .
The meat has been bought and paid for for months .
I can whole heartedly understand someone without transport relying on store deliveries .
Get your stuff early when it comes in-store and use a reliable source for Christmas meat and have a back-up meat just in case .

Doyouthinktheyknow · 23/12/2022 17:57

We’ve always been very lucky with Ocado and have done well this year. Nuts substituted with nuts, Brie with Brie, some party food bits substituted with random other party food bits. Everything else is there so very relieved.

I normally work over the Christmas period, this is my first year I have had the whole bank holiday period off so the last thing I want is to be shopping on my days off. I love online shopping and it’s always worked out for us with ocado.

Why don't people who are fit and able not go to the supermarket? And who needs 60 eggs? Mind boggles....

I bake. I will use about 12 eggs for what I have planned to make.
We have scrambled eggs for breakfast on Christmas day and 8 people -all adults- are here for Christmas.

Bubble and Squeak with fried eggs are planned for boxing day.

Even just doing breakfast with x 2 eggs for each and 1 x for bubble and squeak and we have used 24 eggs + 12 for baking = 36

I will make a bit more than 2 each for the scrambled as DS and son-in-law will eat more than 2. Likely 3 more so 39 used

DH being diabetic often has eggs for breakfast as it is a good source for him to start the day off. Additionally, we do not get another shop until a week from now so really we have about 21 eggs left after the Christmas plan DH will usually eat 2 for breakfast so 5 days x 2 = 10 so we will have 11 left for the next time we buy any this is providing none of the kids decide to have eggs at any point. That is unlikely.

Won't take long to use.

I bought 30 x 2 as I like the box that comes in. Waitrose chose to not substitute for any other eggs I find that odd I can not imagine they are out of stock of all eggs.

I am also capable of making many of the things I have chosen to buy because I find them more convenient. Much like I do getting the shop delivered.

You are also making a huge assumption that everyone here is able-bodied.

I was in my local big Tesco Extra 2 days ago. No cream crackers of any sort (Jacobs or Tesco own brand) and no reasonable alternatives except some of the more out there flavoured thins etc.

Aldi had none of their cream crackers either.

The staff at the Jacobs cracker factory have been striking, that’s why there’s cracker shortages.

GarlicBreadItsTheFuture · 23/12/2022 18:09

Ocado seem to be delivering everything except cream on tonight's order which is annoying as I need it for various things I'm cooking but otherwise they have been ok. It's rare they have missing items.

Hey ho will just have to pop to the supermarket (or risk sending teenage son).

DoubleGauze · 23/12/2022 18:12

@silverclock222 my son is autistic. He's a flight risk and can't wait in a queue.

mast0650 · 23/12/2022 18:17

That's dreadful!

Have to say my Ocado order was very good. Over £300 worth and only two minor substitutions which I can definitely live with.

I was annoyed by Cook. I placed an order ages ago with just a couple of things in it and planned to add quite a bit more last weekend . The order confirmation clearly said that I could edit the order up to two days before - I checked. When I came to do it it turned out that Christmas orders were closed on 8th Dec !!!!! Customer service claimed that my order confirmation said that and that I also received an e-mail reminder. They lied!!

Anyway I got almost everything in store so it wasn't a disaster but it was needless stress and hassle

ScrappyMoggy · 23/12/2022 18:21

Picked up large Waitrose order today at 2pm, a few substitutions but all were good ones, in fact they were all “upgrades” either a better version or bigger packet and as they charge you the lower price I was very happy. Nothing missing.

I did get the Turkey and trimmings from M&S which I picked up 3pm. All there and as expected. Better than last year when it didn’t go so well!

PennywisePoundFoolish · 23/12/2022 18:29

There is a shortage of eggs because of Avian flu, supply chain is precarious, so worth ensuring accepting subs if you're default is no subs.

caringcarer · 23/12/2022 18:31

Last Xmas my turkey crown was missing off my order and about 5 other items from Morrisons including my raspberry pavlova I was having as dessert an DC pigs in blankets. It came late on evening of 23rd. I went out on 24th dreading not being able to find pigs in blankets or a turkey crown but managed to get one half price in Aldi. I also picked up a second and put in freezer in case my sister did not get hers but she did get one albeit smaller than she ordered. We made do with a lemon cheesecake as no pavlova to be found. Had second turkey crown on New Year's Day. This year I did not trust online order for special Xmas food. Just ordered normal stuff like milk and flour and all of that came except eggs. I went shopping today at Aldi got turkey crown, beef, pigs in blankets, eggs not virtually no frozen desserts left. Popped into Morrisons on way home and found profiteroles, chocolate gateau, marang nests and frozen red berries, squirty cream and ice cream and making Eton Mess. Most shelves were being filled as I shopped.

ginislife · 23/12/2022 18:31

You're all really scaring me !! My Ocado delivery is booked for 9-10 tomorrow morning. I've fetched meat from the butchers but everything else is on the delivery !! It had better come !! 😂

Bignanny30 · 23/12/2022 18:33

Yeah missing items and substitutions are Even more annoying if, like myself you’re disabled and can’t get to the shops. My entertainment food was from sainsbury’s. My son-in-law picked it up for me at 8am. There were a couple of substitutions, but the main problem there was the system. He had to go to the back of the store with my confirmation email, he was given the goods there but then still had to queue at the checkout to put the goods through just like a normal shop ,then scan the bar code that they had sent me to deduct the deposit that I had paid and then pay the balance. What a waste of time.
My main shop was from Waitrose and I’m pleased to say that thankfully I didn’t have the problems that most people seem to have had. My major complaint was being sent cheese straws when I’d ordered a box of biscuits for the cheese board - you can’t put cheese on cheese straws. So we’ll just have to make do with cream crackers from the pantry.
Hope everyone sorts their food out and enjoys their Christmas meals in the end .

Whitewolf2 · 23/12/2022 18:42

Ocado did well for me too today, it was only missing smoked salmon, which we can live without!
I was wondering why they’d been out of stock of cream crackers for ages! I had no idea about a strike.

caringcarer · 23/12/2022 18:42

Only item o have not been able to get hold today was Satsumas as everywhere had the easy peelers my children make a fuss about or Clementines they won't have. The other item fresh parsley for DH Lentil loaf he makes every Xmas. He is going to pop out early tomorrow to try again and failing that will have to use dried parsley. Feeling very pleased with myself because I got a few extra little bits for stockings including the little chocolate stirers to go in hot chocolate, chocolate bombs and a candy floss maker and jigsaw puzzle. I'm not going out again now until Xmas morning when I go to dsons for Xmas lunch.

Because I don’t want to? I’ve been getting supermarket deliveries for about 15 years.
I don’t understand why people go in.

Si1ver · 23/12/2022 18:57

My M&S order tried to give me a smashed £35 Snowglobe Dessert. I'm having to make one this evening. This will teach me to be smug about ordering everything.

Nat6999 · 23/12/2022 19:04

After having my order delivered I have had to claim refunds on two full bags of shopping due to the driver managing to smash two tubs of fresh cream which damaged a whole side of smoked salmon, two ready meals, two packs of sprouts & a dozen eggs, so now we have no smoked salmon, no fresh cream for the trifle & no sprouts for the Christmas Dinner.

Why do people go in? Oh I don't know, to avoid the problems stated by most of the replies on this thread?!

Trinity69 · 23/12/2022 19:19

As an ex employee at Waitrose I can confirm we get as annoyed as the customers regarding the entertaining orders. It’s not just at Christmas, it’s all year round and could be anything…a sandwich platter or even a personalised birthday cake. They just let the branch know they can’t fulfill the order and the staff bear the brunt and feel bad at leaving the customer up shit creek.

Weren't most of those packaged? Could you not just have washed the packaging?

Nat6999 · 23/12/2022 21:36

MalfdaHopkirk what I claimed back won't even cover getting the double cream stains off the brand new carpet, everything was swimming in cream, we didn't notice until we had taken the bag right through the house, ds noticed later there were drips right down the drive so it was obviously broken before it got in the house. They obviously give drivers too many drops at this time of the year, our driver took just over 3 minutes to deliver 18 bags of shopping including going right down the road each time for more crates.
