'With all the trimmings'

I couldn't even type that without my teeth itching.

I'm sure they'll be plenty more...Smile

Well. They didn't know any different though, did they?

No, but they also have no negative feelings about it. They still got their gifts and don't feel like they missed out.

In fact, when our first child was born, I had to convince him to let us do Santa. He's quite a logical, practical person and the "magic" just isn't something that moves him. The "magic" to him is in discovering how all the complex tech works. I think Santa is fun but I must admit I also don't feel this strong sense of "the magic" that so many other people do or any distress that I know my kids have worked it out. It's just a bit of fun.

Kids like presents.

Nom nom..
Cue fb photo of ropey looking dinner swamped in gravy...

I love gravy though..

In the spirit of the thread I really don't like all the Nordic decorations that have become popular. Where's the opulence? The glitter? The sparkle? The GOLD? ugh it's just so BORING.

Can I ask what you mean by Nordic decorations? Have you got a link to any pictures? Do you mean the sort of bare wooden decorations..?

Thisisashitshow · 21/12/2022 12:03

All the trimmings....absolutely hate it.

😂 yes to this.

My dh never believed in Santa as a child (his mum told him there was no Santa) and he feels he’s missed out on magic.

The hidden boast about how young (and therefore intelligent) the kids were when they sussed out the ‘truth’.

FC/ Santa /Seane Corne (Wales) is just one of the ways people collectively celebrate a festival by weaving and sharing stories. It isn’t lying, it’s called fiction. Every time I read a book, watch tv, theatre, I suspend disbelief and let my imagination take the reins.

I do feel we’ve lost a lot of the magic by starting the build up so early (taking our lead from the shops), and then having festive fatigue by Boxing Day.

I do feel sick at all the consumerism - the amount of plastic and tat that is generated, and in the midst of an environmental crisis.

I also detest the curating and parading of ‘this one’ ‘our little family’ ‘#blessed’ in matching pjs, tree up in November etc… on social media. Just enjoy the day with your family or however else you’ve decided to celebrate. No-one else cares.

😡😂

Not strictly about Christmas, but something that I can imagine being said in response to some of these posts. “Well, you do you & I’ll do me”. Almost always said in a passive aggressive, smug tone that implies that they are far superior to the judgemental person that they are talking to. Makes me want to vomit and lash out in equal measure.

Judgemental person is being a dick though.

What's interesting is how many people take any alternative way of doing Christmas as an insult to how they do Christmas...or feel a need to insult the alternative.

DesertIslandCondiment · 21/12/2022 12:24

“Well, you do you & I’ll do me”

Surely this just means - Take the piss out of what I do. That's fine, just don't do it if you don't want to but I'm still going to do it.

No need to vomit or lash out.

Mortimermay · 21/12/2022 12:29

OooScotland · 19/12/2022 18:17

There are much worse things to think about.

I loathe it for all those reasons and the fact that it is said a lot by people who are being smug over the fact that they’re not spending any money on something.

It goes right along with ‘We (its always ‘we’) prefer experiences over things’.

🤢

All of this! I also find the making memories/prefer experiences to be interlinked. The irony is, at least from the people I see, that the making of memories and preferring experiences is usually just an excuse to show that instead of buying gifts, they spent an obscene amount on attending x,y,z concert/City break/Festival etc. Its become a way of actually showing how your time (and money) is so much better spent than everyone else living their presumably boring lives. But it's not as vulgar as posting a pile of presents and cash because you're "making memories"...

I can absolutely vomit and lash out if I want to, “You do you, I’ll do me” 😂!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/12/2022 12:55

@MistyGreenAndBlue , I know what you mean about Nordic/Scandi decorations, at least the ones a Swedish friend always has, and which I’ve seen elsewhere. Just red and white - certainly wouldn’t cut it for me.

Grasshopper12 · 21/12/2022 13:47

Not necessarily Xmas related but when people post tributes to their partner on Facebook, it's always accompanied by the words "Thank you for everything you do." 🤢 Soo overused.

Marcipex · 21/12/2022 09:05

@BCBird its the tackiest crappiest mass-produced doll you ever saw, plus a myth that it:

1 Watches the childrens every move, in order to report them to FC

2 Gets up to a different jolly jape every night for a surprise in the morning

3 will vanish back to the North Pole if humans touch it.
And the sooner the better, I say.

@Marcipex - I am so glad that Elf on the Shelf didn’t become a thing until long after my children were beyond the age for it. I was knackered and stressed enough in the run up to Christmas without having to do something ‘funny’ with a sodding elf every night.

If people want to do it, that’s their choice - I wouldn’t judge. But I know I simply couldn’t be arsed.

Indeed. Nothing like a vomit and lash out, hugely underrated until you’ve tried it

TheLadyOfHay · 21/12/2022 13:58

Another one from Christmasses at home with DDad as a child. Cracking nuts. DDad sitting with a bowl of nuts on his lap and a nutcracker trying with much swearing to get the contents out of the shells. A mangled walnut or Brazil nut would be solemnly passed out to family members occasionally. Lovely man DDad but did piss me off, DMum told me the same. Just seeing the things makes my eyes slit with rage, may buy myself a bag this year however

Ch3wylemon · 21/12/2022 14:15

Been dipping in and out of this thread.

I saw a sign in Boots yesterday about traditional elf on the shelves. Er no they aren't.

So fake traditions.

You'd love my mum.

She is kicking off because I haven't put the tree up. I've got a 10wk old baby and don't have time or space.

She rang last week to ask if I've 'done all my preparations'. Er what preparations? Have I ordered my food and wrapped up the presents- no and no. So she took it upon herself and ordered my Christmas Dinner food online despite me telling her I wasn't cooking a full dinner this year. So now I'm forced into cooking a turkey dinner because she's ordered and paid for it.

She expects Christmas to do be done in a certain way. The problem is that we are a totally different family to her. DH is Muslim for a start, DS is 18 and not bothered. I'm busy breastfeeding a small baby. I usually work Christmas so I was looking forward to spending a chilled out Christmas at home for once but that doesn't fit her Christmas vision.

Annoy the hell out of her and cook the Turkey on a different day to Xmas Day. 😂

Weller123 · 21/12/2022 14:52

Christmas dog jumpers/outfits, antlers, bow ties and sparkly collars 🤮

Pollywhirl · 21/12/2022 15:04

I totally agree. It’s all for show and no one actually gives a hoot about it 🤣

KittenCatt · 21/12/2022 15:11

That one bloke that wears shorts and a bobble hat when it’s -4 out… WHY?!

Pollywhirl · 21/12/2022 15:12

That annoys me just as much as “see you next year” when it’s New Year’s Eve 😒😂
