I feel such an idiot

A few weeks ago with our Tesco order we got the preorder food catalogue.

It looked yummy and so I picked out what I liked the look of and put it in my basket for the Christmas delivery. I have been asking my oh to go through it and make the choice, which trifle. Which cake. Which meat etc for a few days and now he's finished work he sat down to do it last night

Only to find out it can't be changed as it has already been ordered. The cost is horrendous but the waste is awful. There are two of us, no guests and we have several trifles, logs, cakes cheeseboards. Party food, joints of meat, all 8 portions! The intention was to choose one of each.

I felt ill when he told me, luckily he was calm about it. Christmas is gonna last into February at this rate. Please tell me I'm not the only one?

On Tesco, you don't have to make it up to the minimum basket charge of £40 to hold a slot. They warn you that you'll be charged for delivery, but if you subsequently bring the basket to over £40 by adding stuff later the delivery charge is removed. So there's no reason to book it with premium alchohol, loo rolls etc - just put in your usual bread and milk basics. Then at least you get something useful if you forget to fix it up.

We accidentally did exactly this a few years ago, with about £150 of pre order festive items (DH had just added things he liked the look of with the intention of whittling it down nearer the time)

We phoned up Tesco customer services & were super apologetic - they happily amended the order so we kept only 2 of the pre order things, didn't have to lose the slot at all. Definitely call them - they were very nice about it!

The lady laughed and said it's happened to so many. I was in hospital for surgery yesterday so I wanted an easy time over Christmas. My oh is housebound and I have anxiety so we have everything delivered as much as possible. They let me cancel the trifles which was the main issue as the use by date would be so quick. We can eat the rest over time and nothing will go to waste.

I think you have been misleading you didn’t just put it in your basket, you bought it, thinking you could amend later,

That's good news OP! Hope you're recovering well.

NotSorry · 16/12/2022 12:52

glad it's all sorted @Greensleevevssnotnose get well soon

Branleuse · 16/12/2022 12:52

Cancel the whole thing and shop in person. The times i did a xmas delivery has had so many substitutes or unavailables that its not a reliable service anyway. Supermarkets are not as busy as some say i think

Phew, what a relief! Glad they've let you cancel the tricky-to-sort items. Sounds like you've got lots going on - wishing you a very speedy recovery

Tulipomania · 16/12/2022 12:53

If it's not due to be delivered for over a week surely it can be changed?

And what an odd way to do your online shopping!

WombatChocolate · 16/12/2022 12:53

Didn’t you ask to remove all the items you didn’t want, whilst on the phone? I’m sure it wouldn’t have been a major problem at this stage. What happens is the items just go into store and someone who has left their shopping to the last week will be glad to see the goodies you didn’t want. You win by not having to pay for stuff you don’t want, it isn’t wasted and someone else gets stuff too.

If you are still stuck with lots of items you don’t want, I’d ring again. Honestly, it’s fine. What’s not is waste a nnnd nor. U. Nnnn nn. Innnnnn

Not for the Christmas to order food. You have until the 14th Dec to confirm and after that it is set and you can't add or remove. We fell foul of this when the Christmas covid restrictions came in and we couldn't change our turkey for 14 for a smaller one that the 3 of us would eat! We had a lot of turkey meals that year!

Gosh I never realised this!!

I'm a bit confused though- is it only 'Christmas food' you can't make changes to, but the rest in the basket is sill OK? Or is it the whole order? We have ours arranged for the 22nd and I was going to add to it this weekend, but now not sure we'll be able to!

viques · 16/12/2022 12:43

How wasteful, what happens to the returned food? I bet it doesn’t get put back on the shelf, probably gets dumped. You seem to think it’s really funny to waste everyone’s time and waste food. I think the delivery drivers do know you, and probably have a not very flattering nickname for you too.

Why would they not re-sell a box of dry cat food?

I'm not talking fresh vegetables here.

I assume you have a cat. Why not keep the box of cat food?

ILookAtTheFloor · 16/12/2022 13:00

My cats don't like it. I bought it by accident. The Tesco app is really dodgy for that.

Only for the special Christmas to order food. You can still add other shopping just not the specially ordered stuff (basically stuff they don't normally sell, like Christmas prepared veg and sides, Christmas desserts etc....)

Everything else you can order as normal.

It's just for the festive order food - all other stuff you'll be ok up to the night before

Moon22 · 16/12/2022 13:02

You'll be eating like Royalty until Spring! Don't feel bad or give yourself a hard time! It's quite funny really! If it can't be changed, just enjoy it.. have a few get togethers in January, when everyone is cold, skint and miserable! It'll be lovely!

Sparkletastic · 16/12/2022 13:05

I'd check to see if you can get any earlier slot then cancel it. It is a waste of money otherwise.

Oh god the £9 trifle and £20 prawn platter seemed like such a good idea a few weeks ago! 😭

Didn't think tesco were delivering on Christmas Eve. They never have

NotSorry · 16/12/2022 13:13

Well they clearly are, otherwise OP wouldn't have a slot - I think it depends on the area

Togoodtobeforgotten · 16/12/2022 13:23

They have probably got wise to those people that chuck just anything in the basket so they can snatch a delivery spot unfortunately it's backfired so sorry this has happened to you. You could always have just chosen one thing of each then added to your order.

user53852098 · 16/12/2022 13:33

A few areas have Christmas Eve deliveries, we don't in ours
