I feel such an idiot

A few weeks ago with our Tesco order we got the preorder food catalogue.

It looked yummy and so I picked out what I liked the look of and put it in my basket for the Christmas delivery. I have been asking my oh to go through it and make the choice, which trifle. Which cake. Which meat etc for a few days and now he's finished work he sat down to do it last night

Only to find out it can't be changed as it has already been ordered. The cost is horrendous but the waste is awful. There are two of us, no guests and we have several trifles, logs, cakes cheeseboards. Party food, joints of meat, all 8 portions! The intention was to choose one of each.

I felt ill when he told me, luckily he was calm about it. Christmas is gonna last into February at this rate. Please tell me I'm not the only one?

I do get that but if it's just the 2 of you, you don't need 18 mini tarts.

I hope you can cancel the order OP!

that was my order

With most orders you can return what you don’t want to the driver and a refund is issued after the van gets back to store. What have Tesco said?

This might be something Tesco allow, but food returned to a driver at 4pm on Christmas Eve is likely going to be binned, which is a huge waste.
Plus, if OP has overordered as much as she says, is it really fair to keep the driver hanging about while she goes through everything?

Mariposista · 16/12/2022 11:50

This is one of many reasons why you GO to a supermarket and do the shopping

MrsRinaDecker · 16/12/2022 11:51

I used to volunteer for the food bank.. One year a couple got in touch with us on about the 23rd, they had accidentally both done the M&S food order and ended up with two luxury turkeys! They donated the spare one to us, and we were able to give a lady and her children - who were in pretty dire straits - a Christmas dinner they could never otherwise have afforded. I still get a little teary eyed thinking about it.
So if there isn’t an option to cancel, and there are items you can’t freeze, perhaps you could be that kind of modern day Santa too?

Yerroblemom1923 · 16/12/2022 11:52

Am I ther only one not getting it? Did OP duplicate order or her DH added stuff that was already on it????? If you can afford it enjoy it. Freeze stuff etc

It's not a normal order - think of it like ordering loads of stuff from amazon - when the amazon driver gets there, going through it all and saying "I don't want those items, take them back please"

vix3rd · 16/12/2022 11:53

When it's delivered can you not just hand to back to the driver for a refund ?

Twixxed · 16/12/2022 11:55

The first year I used Tesco online I just threw some Xmas food to order in the basket, assuming I could change it later. Found out too late I couldn't. Luckily it pretty much worked but I could so easily have waaaay over ordered without meaning to - so don't feel silly. Hope they sort something out for you.

knittingaddict · 16/12/2022 11:56

That's a long cut off. My Ocado order is arriving on 23rd and I have until 21st to change it. I would have been caught out too op.

Morechocmorechoc · 16/12/2022 11:56

Just reject it on delivery and they will take it back and refund you. No waste

RunLolaRun102 · 16/12/2022 11:56

Just accept it all and freeze as much as possible. You could give the desserts as gifts if they come prepackaged but if not just eat them. If you can afford it, it isn’t too bad.

It's stuff from the 'food to order' Christmas range. OP added lots of options - more than they actually wanted - for her DH to choose from (thinking he could delete some from the order). Then realised too late that the 'food to order' had been locked in and couldn't be changed.

Yes, I lost the slot. I thought that was better than paying for about three times more food than we were going to need.

The Christmas hysteria never fails to amaze me. Shops close for one, maybe two days and most of us manage not to starve.

This. You need Christmas dinner for two? Go to the shops today and get what you need (this will take, what? An hour of your time?)and cancel the order. You can freeze stuff with a short date that you need for Christmas Day and leave out to defrost the day before. What's the problem?

It's not along cut off - the 14th December cut off is just for the special Christmas food as it is made to order - all the rest can be changed up to the night before

Anyway @Greensleevevssnotnose hope you get sorted and Tesco take pity on you

There's 2 of you, why can't you just drive to the shop and buy the food? We get the meat from the butchers/ahead of time (usually lamb), veg a farmshop and just do a shop a few days before Xmas for any last bits (anything long shelf life you can just buy in the weeks before in your normal shop). There's 8 of us for Xmas, plus 10 for Xmas eve, we've never done a pre-ordered delivery, I've no idea why 2 people would need this, how much can you eat over 2 days??

I'd cancel and drive to the shop.

Thanks @Twixxed I thought I was the only one "getting it"

UnbeatenMum · 16/12/2022 12:01

There's a supported housing charity near me that would happily accept fresh food on Christmas Eve if they were contacted in advance (or possibly even if not).

StaunchMomma · 16/12/2022 12:02

I'm amazed they have such a long edit cut off! Ocado's is a day and a half! (I only know that because I just went and checked because I do the same!).

One year I reserved the basket to minimum cost and left adding other items rather late - I got a phone call from customer service asking if my total Xmas order was actually just a £150 bottle of champagne 😬

They said their system suggested they needed to order in a huge amount of expensive wines/champagnes and very few turkeys so they thought they'd better check in with customers 😂

I laugh but I did feel awful and now I do a you and just throw everything at it.

I will be setting a reminder to do it in time, now!

Hope the additional cost doesn't have negative impacts, OP. I'm sure a few of those items donated to a foodbank would help to make a local family's Xmas, if you can.

Xmas Wink you beat me to it

ShepherdMoons · 16/12/2022 12:09

Can you speak to the supermarket and see if something could be refunded?

If you can afford such a large order why not take it to one of the homeless hubs in your area or distribute to some elderly residents who can't afford luxuries at Christmas. I'm sure they'd be so grateful and you would feel good to give something to people who are struggling at this time of year.

The food bank will love you. You can make several families’ Christmases.

So? Confused

Ravageur · 16/12/2022 12:19

I had flu one year and my Christmas Ocado delivery consisted of just a £100 bottle of champagne
