I feel such an idiot

A few weeks ago with our Tesco order we got the preorder food catalogue.

It looked yummy and so I picked out what I liked the look of and put it in my basket for the Christmas delivery. I have been asking my oh to go through it and make the choice, which trifle. Which cake. Which meat etc for a few days and now he's finished work he sat down to do it last night

Only to find out it can't be changed as it has already been ordered. The cost is horrendous but the waste is awful. There are two of us, no guests and we have several trifles, logs, cakes cheeseboards. Party food, joints of meat, all 8 portions! The intention was to choose one of each.

I felt ill when he told me, luckily he was calm about it. Christmas is gonna last into February at this rate. Please tell me I'm not the only one?

Given how many people reserve a slot with premium alcohol, it would make sense for the supermarkets to design this in with an expensive 'bookmark bottle'. That way, staff would know that any orders with this item still in the basket hadn't been finalised.

I don’t know about other supermarket, but with Tesco you can add an entire previously order to your basket with 1 click.

i use that as a bookmark order, on the grounds that 80—90% of it will be stuff I need anyway.

Staff will still be there. My dad works nights at Tesco, he doesn’t normally finish until midnight on Christmas Eve.

The ease of modernity - where you can order trollies and trollies of food and have it delivered without even realising, let alone breaking sweat.

Beachhutnut · 17/12/2022 18:49

Just hand back what you don't want. They will refund you. Usually the same day. It's not ideal, but don't go into debt over this.

Sillyname63 · 17/12/2022 18:51

The funny thing is I have a regular Tesco delivery but was only able to get a slot for Tuesday next week (20th) and although I had an email to tell me I could not make changes after 14th I have been able to do it? So not sure why, you could try and send some stuff back with the driver say your guest's have had to cancel or try customer service first as it would save waste on their part as it normally goes into a bin when they return perishables.

fussyhousewife · 17/12/2022 18:58

I use Sainsburys and the driver takes back what you realise you do not need. I am not sure whether so near to Christmas you could do that so I would make call to customer services first to see what can be done. I am surprised Tesco has such an early cut off day - I made changes to my Sainsburys order today and that worked perfectly.

Does anyone know if the deadline for changing a Sainsbury's order will be any different?

WhirlyTwirly · 16/12/2022 23:33

If it’s just the two of you, do you really need a Christmas delivery anyway? Just cancel the entire order and go to the shops and pick up what you need.

So fucking what if its only two! What , because its not a family of four they don't really need delivery!! If you actually READ sweetie, OP has just had surgery and husband is housebound. Honestly, people like you are the problem with society.

MadCatandBirdLady · 17/12/2022 19:29

You can change the order date to after Christmas and the Christmas food to order will no longer be available. You will lose you r slot though. Just did it myself

rosemarysalter · 17/12/2022 19:34

What a crap service

Id be tempted to cancel entirely and shop in store

Toomuchtrouble4me · 17/12/2022 19:53

Greensleevevssnotnose · 16/12/2022 10:59

Then I'll lose the slot I think

Does that matter? Just go in store and buy? Better than ordering tonnes of stuff you don’t need?

Lewiscapaldiscat · 17/12/2022 20:01

Only on mumsnet would someone not read the f*** thread and then bemoan they only didn’t £100 on a two year old who doesn’t even know what day it is! Ffs

Lewiscapaldiscat · 17/12/2022 20:02

Is this a Click & Collect (I didn't think Tesco deliver on Christmas Eve?). I'm sure you can hand items back at collection and get a refund.

You're right- I was a picker for Tesco and there are no deliveries or click and collect on Christmas Eve , Christmas day or boxing day.....strange

Withmayo · 17/12/2022 20:05

Ask some friends round and have a party!

Zazazoolly · 17/12/2022 20:20

You can ring them and change or cancel it just give back to the driver what you don’t want

BoffinMum · 17/12/2022 20:21

If they won’t let you can’t, can you cancel your debit card so the payment direct go through? Wink

BoffinMum · 17/12/2022 20:22

*Can’t

BoffinMum · 17/12/2022 20:23

*cancel

in my defence I have been doing low carb and I just had wine for the first time since November

Mandyjack · 17/12/2022 20:25

Take some back on the day of delivery

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/12/2022 20:54

Why does it make a difference if there's only two people? There's only DH and I but the butcher will be delivering the chicken and Ocado the rest of it. Why make life harder than it needs to be?
