Tree lights- how many?!

This year is our second Christmas in our new house, and we've had to get a bigger tree due to the high ceilings dwarfing our old one last year!

So for those with a 9ft tree- how many lights do you have on yours? Google is telling me anything from 1000 to 3000

I would use about 1000 small lights and a few strings of larger lights. The larger ones tend to have about 30 or less on each set so maybe about 4 sets?

Im a bit of a Christmas tree maximalist so you might prefer a more pared down style.

NippyWoowoo · 10/11/2022 23:06

100 per foot of the tree

AppleandSpice · 10/11/2022 23:28

Rule of the thumb is 100 per foot of tree.
But it really depends on how bushy and wide the tree is is and whether it’s up against the wall or not, so it’s not always the case.

I have 2, 7ft trees. Main tree has 1200 and that’s just about right but it does stand in front of the window so have to go round the back at the top as can be seen from outside.

2nd tree has about 800 (not too sure) but stands against the wall so is about right for that one. Both trees are quite bushy and wide but if it’s a narrower tree you probably wouldn’t need as many.

Also it’s a personal preference. I like lots of lights but some people like less.

TheHappiestChristmasTree · 10/11/2022 23:39

Thanks all, it's quite a bushy one Grin so thinking I may need more

It's this but 9ft

Yes I’d definitely go for more on that tree as it’s quite dense. I’d hazard a guess at about 2000 ish.

Its a lovely tree though and bet it’ll look lovely once it’s done

Icanflyhigh · 11/11/2022 00:56

Ours is 6.5ft and we have approx 3000 lights on it!

MonkeyPuddle · 11/11/2022 00:58

Our tree is 6ft and has 3000 lights. But my taste in Christmas decor could well be classed as gaudy.

MaybeNotThisYear · 11/11/2022 01:02

I have an 7.5 foot tree, not quite as dense as yours - and not as wide and I had 1200 lights on it - and it was just enough. So I think around about 2000 lights as well (if you want to be generous), although you would probably get away with 1500 lights tbh. I wrap around every individual branch as I build the tree!

RedemptionOrNothing · 11/11/2022 01:10

I use 4 sets on a 9ft. 1 set spiralled close to the trunk and the other 3 further out. 9ft trees are wide you need a good floor space as well as height. You will need 4 sets for the girth as much as the height.

RedemptionOrNothing · 11/11/2022 01:13

Spiral around the trunk then imagine the branches in 3 vertical thirds then zig zag up them rather than spiral.

PinkButtercups · 11/11/2022 01:47

I have a 7ft tree and have 1000. So I'd say 9000 is just about right on a 9ft tree.

Franticbutterfly · 11/11/2022 09:03

2000 easily.

xogossipgirlxo · 11/11/2022 10:33

NippyWoowoo · 10/11/2022 23:06

100 per foot of the tree

Oh, didn't know it- I unconsciously followed this rule though. Well done me 😂

TheHappiestChristmasTree · 11/11/2022 10:38

So a wide variation of answers! I think I'll try 2000 and then I can always add more if need be. Thanks everyone. Thinking I'll have to get the tree up soon to test the lights Grin

Clearly I was half asleep I meant 2000 🤣

PinkButtercups · 11/11/2022 11:08

Not 9000*

Suzi888 · 11/11/2022 11:20

Well it all depends how sparkly you want it to be. I’ve bought a new 8ft this year and have gone with 2,000 lights.

longtompot · 11/11/2022 14:00

I have a 6ft tree and have 600 lights on it but tbh it was a struggle getting them on last year (the first year of both) and had to keep taking them off to get them to go all the way up. I also miss the back of the tree as it's tight into a corner. I'm thinking of getting 1000 for this year and then use the 600 string in the kitchen🤔

BastardtheCat · 11/11/2022 14:07

For those of you with 1000 or 2000 lights, are they all on one circuit? Where do you buy them from?

Yes. I got mine from the range. I can't be dealing with multiple set of lights on a tree

BeaLola · 11/11/2022 14:19

We have a real tree each year / usually 6ft - we have 1500 white lights on it - all one set - think we bought them from either B&Q or similar

Frazzled2207 · 11/11/2022 14:23

had this conversation the other day. I naively thought box of 120 lights would be enough for a 6 ft (real) tree. I don't want to be absolutely dazzled though. AIBU?

Foxglovesandlilacs86 · 11/11/2022 15:30

It is supposed to be 100 per foot of the tree but it depends on how sparkly you want it I suppose!

ChickinMarango · 11/11/2022 15:39

I’m sure we have 3600 for our 8ft but they’re cluster ones. I can’t confirm until we get the boxes out though!
